Replacement PS5 has coil whine worse than the first

In case anyone was wondering how widespread coilwhine is, I have quite a bit of experience with it myself, 5 different PlayStations I've owned (I've owned a total of 6, I didn't include the Nidec fan PS5 I owned for equal comparison of coil whine).

My brother also has a PS5 and he got super lucky, as his unit is the quietest PS5 I've heard.

There's been a lot of issues with the PS5 and I'd like to elaborate on some of these issues.

1. The fan bearings. Yes I would even put this above coil whine. Most people complaining about coilwhine, it's not that loud y'all. The fan bearing can noticeably ruin the sound of your console during all scenarios though. I've had 4 PS5s with the NMB fan, 1 with a Nidec, and 1 with a Delta. Of all the NMB fans 3 of them had bad bearings (making either a noticeable squeal or squeaking sound) and it only gets worse when it spins faster. 1 of them (my current console) was perfect and had no squeaking, squeal or grumbling. I can't believe how bad some of those fans sounded and they were all manufactured by the same damn company.

2. The design of the plates on the side of the console. They are just too many random issues they cause. Some of them vibrate and cause buzzing sounds of their own (different from coil whine) and it just ends up feeling cheap and tacky.

3. Coilwhine (of course). This is an issue but from all of the consoles I've owned, they don't actually range that much. The average console measured at 36-38 decibels. My brother's PS5 (the quietest I've ever seen even on all of youtube or any medium) measured at a whipping 35 decibels. It's not the sound that's the issue, really it's the CHANGING OF THE PITCH that's so annoying. If it was a constant hum at 38 decibels no one would complain, but because of the pitch that's always changing it can really bug some people. The only thing Sony needed to do was splat on some anti vibration silicone and call it a day, that would have resolved 99% of these issues with the coil whine. They could have gone with a higher volt capcitor too, but I don't think that matters as much as the silicone (same type of capacitors are in the Series X, the goo makes all the difference).

4. The glossy black. After the PS3 and PS4 you'd think Sony would have learned their lesson and just make the fuckin thing matte, but no they had to make it glossy and a dust magnet. This urks the shit out of me.

I have access to a few ps5s, fan issues are nothing compared to the coil whine.in fact, in terms of fan noise the ps5 is the best of all the recent sony consoles, including the ps4 slim. They just need to fix the dam coil whine and case vibrations.

Are you sitting that close the console? These posts are so incredibly dishonest. If i have my ps5 directly next to me ear, like literally, like in this video, I can hear it too. Stop telling people nonsense. There is legit noise and then there is this crap. Stop, just stop.

I like to listen to my TV kinda quietly 6-8 feet away. When I turn the PS4 on in a game, it is as loud as the TV unless there is an explosion happening. It makes me concerned it is literally going to die. I think mine actually might be the fan bearings.

I have experienced coil whining on my PS5 a few days ago, it was clearly recognizable from 2m distance and it was during rest mode, maybe it was updating or downloading I don't know.
I haven't had any noticeable coil whining before and since then.

That's wasn't the point I was trying to make.

The point is, people claim they don't have coil whine or their system is dead silent...it's not. The Series X is dead silent.

There's been an exaggeration in regards to how quiet the PS5 is, I would say whisper quiet would be a fair description but not silent and "mY pS5 mAkEs No NoIsE" is also inaccurate.

All PS5s have coilwhine from the shoddy power supply design, but to varying degrees (all of them audible).

You don't even need to be right up to the system to hear it, I can hear it from my bed 8 feet away CLEARLY, especially when playing Destiny 2, Demon's Souls or AC: Valhalla.

The sound doesn't bother YOU, but I'm being objective...and this was a simple fix. This is what the PS5 sounds like, nothing misleading.

Right? I only ever hear anything significant if I'm close like that in the video or if the disc is running.

My was occasional and soft at first, but is now noticeable in rest mode or on, and really ramps up in gameplay.

Amazing how this only happens to neo members who only post here and owners who prefer xbox. It's an absolute phenomenon I tell ya.
I prefer my PS5, what does the sound of the console have anything to do with preference?

I have hundreds of PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 games physically.

I'm literally the biggest Sony Pony you could find, but it's funny how some people can just ignore any issue coming from Sony. That's pathetic.

Respectfully, you're full of shit.

I've had my PS5 since mid December and it IS dead silent now just like it was then. I can play Demons Souls or any other game for hours, and go put my ear right up close to the back and hear nothing but at most the sound of a very low fan....no buzzing, no humming, no whistling, no farting, nothing. There ARE 100% dead silent systems, just as there are ones with these issues. Why some have it and some don't i have no idea. I consider myself lucky i have a silent one.

I know these noises when i hear them.....my PS4 Pro was a jet at times, and it drove me bat shit crazy. Your condescending attitude and dismissal of the fact that there "ArE nO qUiEt Ps5s!!!" is quite pathetic.

Congratulations on your dead silent series X, go play it instead of coming here and trolling this post

The a̶l̶t̶ sleeper accounts have been activated.

This thread is an interesting one to watch, that's for sure.
What's funny is, it had started to transition to the PS5 issues thread which was anonymous. That was until dcmk7 dcmk7 made the Xbox issues thread that was also anonymous and it just stopped. The OP of this thread continued trying to get sent back consoles from Sony and finally took my advice and pressed the reset button and bought from a different source. ONE shot and he got a perfect PS5 and never a word of gratitude. He just left.

Why don't you ever post in any other thread? There's plenty of PS-centric threads around. Come join the fun
I'm new to NeoGaf.

I joined literally because of the PS5 issues I had. Everyone was saying their PS5 is dEaD SiLeNt, thought something was wrong with my PS5.

6 PS5s later, and yeah...it's them fanboys that are full of shit. Microsoft is shit, bit I like how they built the Series X. I got literally 8 Xbox games, so much for being a MS fanboy.

It's obvious you are new. Was your Era account banned? Noone else could possibly be right but you, and everyone who says the opposite of what you say is lying. You sound like an Era user alright.

Ahh yes, everyone who disagrees with you Must be evil! And you don't even need any evidence, you just know that "Sony= PERFECTION!!! MOOMMMMY!!!!!!" So if anyone says they aren't perfect, they must be the devil! Great work kiddo, You'll get out of Kindergarten in no time!

Another one that clearly doesn't read.

I said in one of my responses that my PS4 Pro made a shitton of fan noise at times, and i hated it. I also said that there are PS5's that are silent and also ones with issues. I think you're the one who is still in Kindergarten as your reading comprehension skills are definitely lacking.

Imagine this being your 3rd post here. Or maybe it isn't? Must think everyone here was born yesterday or something.

I wouldn't even mind if the bullshit wasn't so obvious.

None of these guys are actually interested in talking about games or anything else on the forum, none of them can talk about their "coil whine" without referencing Xbox in the same post. Look at the top comment on the video he posted.

It's almost as if I've seen these tactics before. Another generation, the same old shit.

For what it's worth I think the OP was legit but he just liked a moan and the attention/support of the Xbox cavalry. As for the cavalry themselves I don't believe a word that they type.

The Sony Persecution complex here is insane. You act like people got super loud consoles on purpose, or that Sony knew the "Real Fans" And didn't send the Lemons their way.

Greg Miller's PS5 was going out on him last night. Are you going to say He's a MS fanboy? LMAO

Guys enough of the console war bullshit, xsx has disconecting controllers and ps5 has coil whine, we need to tell ms and sony to fix their shit.

What does it being my 3rd post here have anything to do with anything?

My YouTube account is posted on here now I've been posting about my PS5 basically since I've gotten it on my YouTube channel?

Check through my youtube channel, has anyone else posted my YouTube videos lol?

I never mess with forums because of people like you who live and breath on these boards lol.

Yes both 100% have problems, It's launch hardware. That's why people insisting that the problems aren't problems need to stop.

How has someone been able to acquire 6 PS5s since launch? seems far fetched.
Certain retailers are really good about that sort of thing if you bark up the right tree.

Here's the thing, there are people who have coil whine issues. Consoles that have problems are legit, not everything is manufactured equally.

But when you have bullshitters coming in here saying every PS5 has coil whine then what do you expect?

When my OG Xbox One had a chirpy power brick I would just say the power brick is a tad on the noisy side, slight annoyance but nothing I can't live with. Not "guys, my power brick makes noise but my ps4 doesn't have a power brick that makes noise, here's a video with dozens of other power bricks that make noise. All Xbox ones have noisy power bricks, if you claim to have a silent one you are lying and need to get your ears checked. By the way did you hear about my ps4 that doesn't have a noisy power brick, Sony did such a good job making the power supply internal, maybe you should consider a ps4."

Totally. As far as op, I agree. I genuinely wanted to help him and I ultimately gave him his solution. He just fell into the cliche you mentioned. Oh well.

Hostile_18 Hostile_18 the OP of this thread went through several PS5s before he was able to get one that was quieter. I just swapped once and gave up. I'm pretty sure they all have some degree of coil whine it's just some people are less bothered by it than others. Then again maybe I'm some neo member who is secretly looking to bring down Sony for MS or something. People refuse to believe that Sony makes any mistakes or releases any hardware that has issues. The PS5 clearly has some issues but that doesn't take away from the good games Sony puts out. I guess people are just pretty tribal about game consoles.

I never mess with forums because of people like you who live and breath on these boards lol.

But yet you're still here interacting with people like me? What does that say about you then?

Your YT channel is literally some PS5 coil whine videos and then some decade old videos about bodybuilding with a huge gap in between. I'm happy for you that the PS5 coil whine issues inspired your sudden return to YouTube and to start posting here.

None of these sound very different than the other ones really... just some slight differences and you can't be sure it's from coil whine or fan.
They all sound pretty ok. I can't hear my outside of game installing but I am not putting my ear behind it. Even though it is sitting to the left of my monitor at the desk, it's even quieter than ps4 slim. For sure quieter than my phanteks p600s pc with all be quiet fans locked to 700rpm and 3080 founders.
IMO I would consider it DEAD SILENT. Xbox is nice too and all but at least ps5 don't have cockroach holes and dust input holes on top for dropping dust :P
Besides, wtf are you crazy or what?! Chill out and work on your OCD. It will ruin your life. You are not sitting this close.
This is ridiculous that manufacturers have to deal with customers like You.

btw how is your black middle glossy part so dirty so fast. I agree it's a glossy piece of garbage but just don't touch it. never. and dust off with duster gently. Or get dbrand skin

edit: Also, it's not "bad" power supply design. Coil whine is absolutely normal and does not mean it is cheaper component or that it will last less than non noisy coil. It can just as well last for 50 years

3 from Best Buy, 3 from Sony (1 of the consoles I got from Sony was a replacement as it was defective and didn't work, but replaced with an entirely new console from Sony Direct.

Oh.....so you made 6 separate PS5 purchases? I thought you were saying you bought/returned those PS5s due to the noise.

Why so many PS5s?

So your name is mohammad and "rus" at the same time?

Hmmmmm

I think it's cute that you got some of your friends to email you their receipts for you to use in this post, MohammadRuss.......or should we call you RussMohammad?

For someone who loves their "silent" X series X you sure do spend alot of time here shitting on PS5's and going out of your way to prove that "you" got 6 of them

I thought that something was wrong with them lmao. Because people kept saying their PS5 was dead silent, so I'd buy one then give/sell it to family and friends at cost or less.

All my friends got a PS5 because of me basically.

You mean on the very first PS5? The only one that has my brother's name on it? I think it's cute you're reaching so hard to try to twist it.
