Report: Xbox will start banning unlicensed third party (wireless) controllers in November

This is probably why they are doing this.
How are they going to do that with their push for mandatory crossplay where on PC you can use pretty much whatever you like?

It's more likely that they've seen an influx of controller use that brings them no revenue. The fact they did this so near to Forza is suspect too. A lot of people would need to go out and buy new expensive steering wheels.

1) Yes, PC is where I will go when I dump them for this. It has been making rapid advancements for fighting and racing fans.
2) You are obviously completely ignorant of the FGC and Racing sim communities. This deeply affects a huge number of people.
3) Get fucked with your "Just buy another $250 controller every new system" bullshit. There is absolutely no reason for them to block out controllers for their own past systems, ESPECIALLY when they have hundreds of BC titles for that system running on the new one. It's pure anti-consumer money grubbing.
4) Nobody makes arcade sticks of the quality I have anymore. It happened only a couple times. Thousands of people in the FGC do custom builds because of this.

And yet if Nintendo did it, people would be like, well that's Nintendo.

As to no reason, there's obvious multiple reasons, including cheating and fairness to those who actually pay for the licenses, but I guess you don't care about anyone else.

And this still goes back to you don't even know yet if it affects you and your already complaining. For all you know, ms has your back.

You can't be serious with this shit The Duck. First of all controller adapters are not old or obsolete tech. A lot of FGC and steering wheel users use them. Secondly you bet your ass if they suddenly decided to ban me from using my TV simply because they wanted to make more money I would be justified in being pissed no matter how in the minority I am. If it's not such a big deal why ban it in the first place?

It's all grey area, you know you taking chances with adapters and unlicensed peripherals. The indignation is what more surprising.

Not talking about banning you from your tv, we are talking about legacy of an unlicensed product support being discontinued.

Most of the time the user doesn't even know if a third party controller is licenced or unlicensed. An 8bitdo controller for example, licenced or unlicensed?

You gave a composite TV analogy to show how ok it was because it's 'old'.
A) people would still be pissed in that analogy if the only reason is to push you to buy new shit
B) these adapters and controllers aren't old obsolete tech.

The title for the product literally says it ......

"8Bitdo Ultimate Wired Controller for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Windows 10 & Windows 11 - Officially Licensed"

As far as a) goes, they aren't doing it just to force you to buy things.....its been 18 years.
As to b) Micro usb cables weren't technically obsolete but we still moved on to usb c, it's not just about that. Technically an xbox one wasn't obsolete and we moved on to series.
But we don't make games for xbox one for the most part. Everything moves on.

I understand, you guys have legacy devices that cost money that you want to keep using, what I am saying is there is no obligation from MS at this point to assist in that or even make it a priority.

Should have done this years ago (as should PS and Nintendo). The blatant cheat devices like XIM and Chronus are basically like taking Gamesharks into online games.
People really are trying to push this as some kind of anticheat solution when it's not. How are they going to prevent cheating in online games when all the games they push have mandatory crossplay with PC where you can use automated input to your hearts content? How are they going to do it when often they support wired unlicensed stuff like mouse and keyboard peripherals which can have automated input? This isn't going to make your online games better. It's because they want to push hardware revenue up.

That's a wired controller buddy. Read the damn title of the thread . Now look at this:

8BitDo Arcade Stick For Xbox & PC (Windows 10) - Black https://amzn.eu/d/hV9Kfv1

Licenced or unlicensed? Playable on xbox after November or unplayable on xbox after November? You trying to blame the consumer for knowing what they're getting themselves into is just corporate stanning.

So if some phone update stopped you from using your micro usb to USB C adaptor that would be ok because we've moved on? Ok. If it stopped you from using previously working chargers because your phone manufacturer decided it doesn't want it to work anymore unless they get paid by the charger company that would be OK? Your analogies don't work.

This isn't about legacy devices. This is about owning something new. Even people with new, possibly $300 or more steering wheels or arcade sticks no longer able to use them.

Licensed.

It took me all but 5 seconds to look it up, you're trying really hard here. Relax. (y)

If this is true I have no problem with it.

Yes, that's what the official support page says. Only unlicensed things will get effected.

Takes like 2 seconds to verify on the 8bitdo site.

"The very first Xbox-licensed wireless arcade stick. Available worldwide."

People went to use thier $50 cables and could no longer use them. Very few people resorted to adapters. My analogies are fine.
The basic point that tech moves on stands.

This isn't about legacy devices. This is about owning something new. Even people with new, possibly $300 or more steering wheels or arcade sticks no longer able to use them.

It's always been an issue and a risk. Even now you buy an xbox/pc or ps5/pc wheel knowing you can't use it on the other. You could buy an adapter but you know it may not work forever. Closed platform is a closed platform.

You both missed the point it seems. You went searching on the Internet because you had to after finding out that unlicensed stuff will be banned soon and me explicitly asking. I'm not saying information on the Internet doesn't exist. Would you have known if it would stop working just shopping for it on amazon? Would you have even searched it if it weren't for this thread? I asked the question expecting you not to actively seek out the information. I expected you to know the answer. I said most of the time the user doesn't even know if a third party controller is licenced or unlicensed. Not that they can't scour the internet to find out after hearing about them being banned.

Okay Mr Lawyer. That doesn't change the fact official licensing has, up to this point (read: over 20 years), been that licensed means officially supported, not that unlicensed means intentionally blocked. They can freely make that decision yes and people can also freely leave their platform because of it. After all, Microsoft "knows the risks" of blocking stuff. Apparently this is more important than keeping the consumers who care. If they are fine saying "good riddance" then we are perfectly fine to say "fuck you" right back to them. But go on and keep sucking Phil's dick.

Yes, I readily knew that licensed and unlicensed products exist, as do most gamers. Not sure why you think most don't.
You act like this is some sort of huge problem, it's generally a non issue.

You expect ms to support officially licensed peripherals 2 generations later? Lol that's rediculous. They've actually done a better job than most companies in this regard, but there is zero obligation 18 years later.

And beyond stupid to suggest anyone who disagrees with anything negative said about ms what you are suggesting, you should really be banned for saying it.

My arcade stick came out in 2012 and was not operable on Xbox One which came out one year later. This was tolerable because they allowed an adapter since the only "support" needed was to update the xinput encoding just like on PC. They don't need to "support" anything themselves when plenty of companies are happy to do it for them. Now after that adapter has worked for 10 years they are blocking it. They are also blocking anything that anyone using any such thing from any time that they may have bought it. Maybe they wanted to play racing sims with a nice wheel setup on their PC and also Xbox, now it will only work on PC. Same for anyone who doesn't want to drop another $300-500 and fill up a second large space in their house just to be able to play Gran Turismo 7 and also Forza like that. Same for someone in this thread who just got a hall effect stick controller because they got tired of stick drift happening on all the controllers. You are intentionally looking away from the actual living reality of the people this is affecting and how stupid it is of Microsoft. "Not supporting" is a completely different thing from blocking.

By your logic, all the more reason to have a licensing program and official products at the stores. I mean who knows if 3rd party controllers will even work, and consumers are so ignorant.

I dont know why you think it's not common knowledge, I'm not pretending anything.

Your running on the bold assumption that ms's priority is a very, very small population of the people using controllers. They also need to consider many other gamers, cheating, and the 3rd parties that pay to license.
It's very unlikely they are intentionally looking to screw people in your situation - in fact, we don't even know yet if they are.

No. I'm saying that if they want to make their priority something other than my playing the games I'm interested in on their platform as it had traditionally been done for 20 years, okay I won't play on their platform. It isn't my job to make excuses for them when they fuck me over telling me I have to shell out hundreds more for an inferior licensed product to get around a blockade that they put up.

Yes we do. They put up official policy pages explaining that they will be blocking these things. They already made their decision, wrote it out, programmed it into the OS, and scheduled the time. You are the one in denial acting like it's just a big accident until they quadruple down in an official PR statement in response to complaints that arise. They already did this with proprietary encoding for headsets (which are otherwise universal for every other platform), so why would I think they aren't serious when they show this for controllers?

That's your choice I suppose, just seems heavily biased based on your particular unique circumstances vs a picture of the situation in totality.

Guess we will see. Your plan to move to PC makes sense long run anyhow.

I think it's the other way around. You can't use Dual Sense on the PS4.

Nope, you can't even use a PS4 controller on the PS5 to play ps5 games, forcing you to replace all of your controllers for ps5 games, but ms is evil for not supporting unlicensed 3rd party controllers, Sony meanwhile doesn't even support thier own one generation back.

Look I get it, you're stanning for the company and trying to make it seem like people bought some old knockoff stuff and should have known. It's not going to be so funny when the OS update comes out of insider preview in November though and people who use hardware like this in 2023 get shafted by MS unless MS do something to change that. If you think they don't exist have a look:

Its nothing major, this was the Hayabusa lever, with the removed JLF square gate and 0.9 spring. I chose for the same colorway for the JLF, so you can barely see its modded. Though the JLF bar is metal plated and not painted black. But it feels completely different. There is MUCH less travel, it returns to neutral in an instant, and with the 2lb and octo its hard to fuck up DP and fireball motions. The only difference is that you do really need to press when you want to do a backward jump into fireball motion or something. But you'll never jump on accident again.

I thought of Sanwa buttons, but then I thought of my TE1. And I much prefer the Hayabusa buttons. I have no issues with the sensitivity tbh, and they're less slippery because of the matte finish. I personally like how they feel, though they do make noise. I am going to take out the 2 buttons on the right side though, and replace them with caps. I just like the 6 button setup more. Its less confusing and I never use the outside ones anyway. Played a good bit of Tekken 7 online now and I didn't drop much combos. The inputs register really well, just db can be kind of tough but still easier than on square gate which has the tendency to go forward or down. But you have to be really bad to fuck up a fireball motion with this, its almost impossible, it can't overshoot.

For pad, Sega Saturn pc usb pad (retro arch) with brook or may flash converter.

Or learn Hitbox if you are patient. Hitbox is OP on SFV due to shortcuts. More OP if you’re a charge character

dude this shit is way cheaper!

i got two of em so i can keep using my 2 madcatz SF TE1's
still the best looking fight stick imo

Smol flex ;)

Those aren't cheaters, they're not buying knockoffs. They're trying to play their games how they enjoy them and they're going to be kind of screwed if they try to use it on xbox come November. Nothing you say about "they should have known" or "this is like composite TV or micro usb" is going to change that.

I'm not convinced that whitelisting peripherals is about cheaters if what's been said about cross-play with PC is true. That's a particularly scorched-earth way to go about it, and makes me think it's more about money.

Would a blacklist not have been possible instead if this is the goal?

Regardless of motivation, why are only wireless devices affected? Is it a technical reason, with wireless devices having certain addresses that wired ones don't need, thus making it easier? If that is the case, unlicensed just goes wired and any unsavoury devices continue to exist as before. It's not like cheaters are going to see this and suddenly realise they've been less than honourable all this time and go licensed out of shame.

Microsoft is usually pro-consumer when it comes to controllers, but I guess that only applies to the design of their own ones.

Correction. Microsoft is pretending to be pro-consumer at present. Once Xbox is in a position of strength (or once they’ve decided they need to turn the screw on the current user base) then the mask will come off again.
