Resident Evil 4 HD Project - Progress Thread

I'm surprised you don't have the game! Are you planning on getting the UHD version eventually?

As soon as this mod is finished I plan to snap the game up and play through it!

You releasing the Village demo got my trigger finger a bit itchy, but I figured it would be better to hold off so I can enjoy it all at once. If I see it drop in price low enough I'll probably grab it pre-emptively, but if not then I'm glad to wait.

The textures are amazing, but is there a way to change the FOV? I feel like I'm going to puke.

That's outside the scope of our project, but aren't there solutions for this that others have come up with for PC games in general?

Also, I've never had issues with FOV in any game - I'm interested: how does adjusting the FOV help or make it a better experience? What causes a "feel like I'm going to puke" reaction?

I don't get nausea like some do, but I really hate feeling like I'm watching world through binoculars and also it often feels like camera is on a tripod and I'm moving the handle instead of pointing camera directly. I abandoned Rainbow Six Vegas 2 because of that.

Flawlesswidescreen had an FoV fix available, but a patch for the game broke compatibility.

Generally, your mind has a basic idea of what is "natural" to see. Imagine your monitor is a window, and the game you're playing looks like a window into that world. When your FoV is set up appropriately, looking through your screen from 2 feet away should feel about the same as looking through a window about 2 feet away. Your brain expects to be able to see a certain amount around the area.

When there is a discrepancy between what your mind expects to be able to see, and what it is actually able to see, it can cause some nausea for some people.

I'm not sure if others have noticed but when playing 16:9 the game has a slight blur to it. If you render it in 4:3 like the game originally did you'll probably be able to get much crisper screenshots to better show off the texture detail.

I don't personally have the game yet so I can't check myself but it's worth looking into for anyone who wants to keep things sharp.
Yeah I think it's because even in 4:3 the game renders in widescreen but letterboxed, so 16:9 resolutions just zoom in to remove the black bars, just like on the Wii version. You can get around this by downsampling though.

Yes, but I feel that even downsampling it has a bit too much blur. I'd be interested to try rendering at something like 3840x2880 and see how it looks then.

I've tried downsampling at 4k and it looks amazing, but the laser sight on your guns gets really thin. It seems to get worse the higher your resolution goes. I played through the game at 1440p and 8x MSAA and it looked great to me. That's probably overkill, but it never dipped below 60fps on my rig.

Edit:
Apparently I took some screencaps for you in the OT!

It's great to go through this thread starting from the first page. This project was met with such negativity - and, in a way, you cant blame the doubters: retexturing an entire game as big as RE4 might seem a madman's task.

But then this thread just delivers, delivers and delivers. However crazy it might be, what you're doing is God's work.

Never doubted ya for a sec, OP!

Er... They are taking "donations" for this?

So essentially making money off the work Capcom originally did.
What am I missing here?

Give me a break.
They're doing Capcom's work, really, and donations are not required for you to use the mod.

Durante also took donations, when he was doing DSFix...

1. Their work caused a few people to buy the game who didn't otherwise. So capcom should pay them.
2. They're putting in hard work on their own free time for free. If you really enjoy their work you can show your appreciation through donations. Plus you don't need to do it to use it.

No, they're accepting donations for their own independent work that they're doing. All they're doing is creating textures. Their work is original, and it's something a user can utilize to enhance their game experience. They're not making money off the work Capcom originally did.

Also, lets work off the assumption that what you're saying is wholly accurate, is that a bad thing? Not "is it illegal?", is it bad?

I don't know, sounds like a lot. Did you read the thread?

Hint: It involves creating much higher quality textures that takes many, many hours of work.

I can't WAIT for the character models as well that's going to be the true game changer...wow this is so excellent.

They *are* making money off the back of Capcom, because they made RE4. If no RE4, no donations.
However, as SuperEpicBoy says, Capcom will shift some copies on Steam because of this I am sure.

Is it bad? No, I don't think it is. It seems something that will only bring happiness to the world.
I am glad to see you differentiating between illegal and bad, this is important.

Big companies have a history of shutting this stuff down on an internal whim, without reassurances from Capcom, I would give them a 50% chance of sending a cease and desist.

Yeah, no.

They are providing their own textures created by themselves. Absolutely no legal issues with that whatsoever. You're speaking silly talk, mate.

What would they be doing, that is illegal? Taking pictures of public places that happen to match the places RE4 was inspired by? Buying the same stock textures available to anyone that RE4 also used? Or simply modding regularly bought versions of RE4?
Modding isn't illegal, if you're not redistributing copyrighted material, which is why some mods receive C&D.

They aren't selling anything.

They are not forcing anyone to pay. they are taking donations and that is up to the person who donates. I hope you're not trying to downplay their work with the "off Capcom's back" comment. those original textures are horrid and some are unrecognizable, understandably so. they are taking time out of their lives to do texture work for the entire game.

Capcom is not shutting down anything lol. the textures these guys are creating are STILL THEIR TEXTURES,not Capcom's. Gamers have been re-texturing games forever. There's nothing to shut down.

Happy New Year!

Just got done hhhhhnnnnnnnnggggging at the newest update

Really, Chris n Albert, I hope you have this on your resumes and get picked up by a AAA studio or something. You can make a successful career out of this, and you've re-inspired me to do the same one day with modelling and texturing.

Haven't actually taken a look at the demo in person yet, but I feel I should soon.

Also, did they just slap the sliding puzzle texture onto those switches lol? Nobody probably ever noticed, so I suppose that's a smart way to save RAM lol

Playing through with the texture pack and OMG this is incredible. This is the most high quality texture mod I've ever experienced.

Just wanted to come in here and say fantastic work. This project is exciting and definitely does a lot to restore an aging classic. Keep up the good work!

The smart thing for Capcom to do would be to see if this project finishes, and if it does and is high quality enough just buy the rights to it, maybe pay a few thousand dollars and official add the new textures to the game. Valve does the same thing with community made maps for TF2, they'll buy the rights to high quality ones and add them in officially to the game.

Hey Cris, thought this night interest you since you all were working on fixing texture alignments.

The view is zoomed in and I feel like I have severe tunnel vision. This never bothered me in the console versions, but sitting so close to the monitor for the PC version, which I've never played before this (been waiting for this mod), is seriously disorienting. There apparently were FOV fixes, but they don't work after the latest patch. I don't know if I can stomach it, which sucks because these textures are delicious.

HDMI Out to a television that you can sit farther away from?

Hmm I know the FOV varies depending on the situation. Like when you have Ashley in tow, the camera zooms farther out, even when aiming. Same during some boss battles.

I've almost completed a pro run of 4 and this fabulous texture work is going to bring me back later on to play through again. Kudos to you guys!
