Resident Evil 4 HD Project - Progress Thread

Best of luck to Cris in sorting everything out. Don't worry about the project.

These new technical fixes are looking great. Albert, if you remember the SweetFX mod I posted a while back... is it now totally obsolete? ie, does the new mod produce the same change shown here?
Default UHD Edition on color setting 4
SFX applied to color setting 4

The mod mainly did two things, boosting the contrast/gamma so the image wasn't so dark and weak looking, and then slightly adjusting the colors to match the Wii version as closely as possible. It sounds like the colors should definitely be fixed now, but how about the brightness/gamma?

Thanks! :)
I just removed the wrong red filter that was in certain rooms. After this fix, the colours will be exactly the originals we can see running the game in Dolphin emulator. And this is what you can see in the video. So, a new SweetFX config would be needed if you created it using as reference one of the rroms I removed the wrong filter.

If you use as reference the farm area for example (room 103, the first one after the main Village area battle) then that new Sweet FX config will be ok for all the game after we apply our colour changes (because that room has already the original colours)

Then, I created a custom gradient filter that emulates the colours we could see when playing the game on a real gamecube/wii in a TV.
This is what you can see in our comparison shots in our website.

Here's another example of how the game looks removing the reddish colours and using the optional filter:

This filter can be turned on and off (it would replae the 4th colour filter in the video settings menu of the game) and it would be an alternative to SweetFX

Good luck, Cris, a driven dude like yourself should hopefully be able to get back on your feet in no time :D. Definitely the right call to pause work on the mod, always put yourself first in situations like these

I just posted a new "Technical Improvements" post in our site :)
You'll find a lot of info and comparison shots in our site as usual

And here's the video:

Bona nit!!

That's really nice, didn't realise you were doing these kind of technical improvements, real nice job on the water and the foggy shadows especially, those are the kind of things that annoy me greatly lol. The fixed colour thing is great as well, the colder colour tone fits the game much better

Good luck, Cris! Hope to see you back soon!

Thanks guys! I'll provide updates on progress periodically just to make sure folks know I'm not gone. :)

2. The not-so-good: Due to personal circumstances, I (Cris) will need to pause my work on the project for the next few months. Regardless, the project will continue via Albert's efforts until I can return.

Here are a few more details re: #2:

* I have been made aware by my employer that my position in the company is most likely going to be eliminated in January next year
* As a result, I need to focus on finding a new job either with my current employer or with another company
* Additionally, I need to complete some certifications within my field that will hopefully make me more marketable if I do end up needing to find a job with another company
* At the same time, I'm seeing this time period as an opportunity to pursue a few business ideas that I've been thinking about for some time
* Regardless of how this pans out (whether it's a new job at my current company, a new company, or something else entirely) I strongly look forward to returning to the project once my job and income situation has been sorted out
* Albert will continue working on the project as he has been, without interruption (his next update is coming in the next 1-2 days, and I think you'll like it :))
* You will still see me commenting from time to time, responding to emails, updating certain pages on the site, and other minor activities.

I'm sorry for having to step back temporarily. If you have any questions, please let me know. And thank you, everyone, for your encouragement these past 2 years.

Thank you!
- Cris

All the best Cris.
Have you thought about establishing a remaster / port company like Tantalus etc. in regards to this point?

2005 Me looking at original: Wow, this is one of the best looking games I've ever seen.

Then it's such a weird effect watching your preview videos and thinking "but...this is exactly how I remember it looking? What's different?", then seeing how it actually originally looked

Wow, the original textures look like a 3DS game compared to the new ones. I remember the game looking incredible back in the day, now the updated version looks closer to how I remember it!

edit: ha, was thinking the same thing as the guy above :)

It's exactly what projects like this should aspire to achieving. No other retexturing projects have come close to this one. The work these two peeps have done in their spare time is astounding.

Can't wait to replay the game again with these all in place.

The work and care that's gone into this project over the years puts every other "remaster" released by a publisher to shame. No publisher would invest the time or money to do something of this scope. This has evolved into far more than a simple HD texture pack. The fact that they're also modeling new geometry and fixing lighting and engine bugs is above and beyond. And to think it's been through the efforts of TWO dedicated modders blows me away. I still remember years ago using Albert's texture pack for the original release of RE4 for the PC (the crappy one). The fact that he's still perfecting it is inspiring.

I'd LOVE to see a documentary made about this project. It's one part archaeology (tracking down all the original locations Capcom pulled source material from), one part technical skill (fixing all of the lighting and geometry errors), and one part determination (the countless hours poured into this out of sheer love of the game). Every time I see this threads been updated I'm excited to see what they've done.

I know they already have a donate button on the www.RE4HD.com website but what about a starting a GoFundMe page where they could raise enough money to work on this full time? Not that this compares but my friend had a GoFundMe page started for her on Monday for $10K to help with her medical expenses. It hit that goal within 48 hours and it's since been raised to $25K. That's JUST from her friends and family. Although I've previously donated I would surely give again to give them the time needed to finish the project properly rather than in their spare time. Would anyone else get behind this idea?

Once again, really gorgeous work. I think we're fully in "remaster" territory now; this is just way beyond a texture pack. I'm almost as excited for the technical adjustments as I am for the textures; adding light sources and getting the game elements to uniformly react to them sounds like it'll be a major enhancement, especially in the cave you mention. You'll probably have to do a pretty thorough overhaul of all the earlier sections to implement it everywhere, but it'll be worth it.

I also think your time in that lab was well spent. I do usually go through there to collect ammo, since it's got some magnum rounds, and of course separate ways makes it a big boss room. Hopefully it's all coasting downhill from here now that that room is out of the way.

Although I've previously donated I would surely give again to give them the time needed to finish the project properly rather than in their spare time. Would anyone else get behind this idea?

I think that the more money becomes involved in this project, the less secure I feel about it being released without any kind of interference. As it is, Capcom doesn't seem to mind the project, but if they were actually organizing/soliciting funds for it on a larger scale then I feel like there would be some risk of a shutdown. Plus, they're very near the end of the game (the most major work of it, at least) now anyway.

If you really like what they're doing, I think it's best to just keep donating on your own. I've donated what little I can a few times, then after seeing one of those mind blowing updates that takes the mod to another level (like this one) I think "shit, I need to do it again." If everyone who likes the mod does the same I'm sure it will help them out a great deal.

You're probably right. I'd be crushed if Capcom shut this down when it's so close to being finished. I'm going to donate right now and I encourage everyone else to do the same. This is the season for giving anyway.

Thank you guys!
You're right, we can't start any funding campaign because of copyright issues.
Other than that, Capcom have no problems with this project :)

I am continuously astonished by the amount of care, detail and attention you guys have poured into this project.
The one incredibly laudable aspect that makes this mod unique if compared to the vast majority of the other retexturing endeavors out there is how faithful and coherent you are being with regards to the original.
It is simply amazing to see how much all of your recreations and edits are legitimately improving clarity and resolution of the game, while not damaging or altering its presentation in any way whatsoever.

I wish Cris the best of luck for his career and naturally I am highly anticipating the final release of the project. Keep up the good work!

It's impressive to see how respectful you are with this your work on this masterpiece.
I want you to lead a team. I demand you lead an entire team of people dedicated to show the same level of love with other fantastic videogames.

The RE4 experience is one which contributed to shattering the illusion of me ever again thinking "this is as good as it'll ever get, wrap it up". We are always progressing.

Funny how it took a video game to push me over the edge.

This door is blowing my mind right now.

Edit: specifically I think all the geometry edits around the door go so far towards making it all look so real and believable.

Also I just got to watch that technical video and your new water TOTALLY blends in and looks great, nice work.

The brick geometry is an amazing upgrade, and the 3D handle looks fantastic. I'm not going to search the thread to see how many times I've already said this, but this project really is unmatched.

This is how you do a damn HD overhaul. Keeping the original look and feel of everything, just looking a hell of a lot better. Amazing work!

Also, I do NOT remember the original looking that bad. I haven't really played it since the GCN days, and I guess the awful textures weren't as apparent in SD, but still. How our perceptions change!

Re4 is just the best game. And when I think about how much I love it, I get more excited about this project. Thank you for giving my favorite game such dedication and effort to detail, and keep up the amazing work!

It's christmas soon, so I got santa to send you guys some cold hard digital cash.

Can't wait until the whole thing is out so I can finally replay this game!

Ohh thank you for the Xmas present! :D

I like the door better on pic two on original. Looks more gritty seems off on your version

It's the same texture but in HD, so... I really don't know what to say XD

I found the complete version of the double door (In fact, it's a combination of 2 door textures). So, I used the complete "set" version instead of just one duplicated and mirrored door. That's the only difference.

Most times, the blurriness of the original makes the textures to look more gritty but that's caused by the lower resolution.

This is an absolutely outstanding project. You've more work into creating new texturework than literally every remaster put together.

Some of the comparisons in the latest batch show more deviations from the source material than I've come to expect from this project. Any particular reason for that?

Hello! There has been no change in the intent of the project, so if there's specific feedback please let us know (there's either an explanation or an opportunity to for us to improve :)).
