Resident Evil 7 - PC Performance Thread

I thought that was just for Quantum Break, and only for NVidia owners since DX11 mode offered a performance boost for their cards.

Perhaps worse wasn't an accurate term, I don't have evidence which is why I refrained from saying anything definitive. It's unlikely many people will buy the W10 version to test, but historically W10 games have run poorly. I bought almost all the exclusive UWP releases last year and Gears was the only one that ran well for me.

Odd, I also purchased most of the games and Forza Horizon was the only one to really run poorly and is now mostly fixed.

Regardless, I may just wait it out and see. Definitely won't be the end of the world if I get the Steam version. Just really like the idea of getting two versions for the price of one. Thanks for the responses though.

Any discussion of input latency happening? I'm running on a gsync monitor in fullscreen with vsync disabled and there's definitely still a slightly delayed, "swimmy" feeling to mouse input. It's not a gsync configuration issue as far as my knowledge of gsync stretches. I'm just curious to know whether the slightly off mouse delay is built into the engine or some issue that I can fix/tweak.

Edit: I guess I should mention that my framerate is sitting at >100 throughout gameplay

Well encountered my first stutter/pause. It happened about 4 times now. I wonder what's causing it?

Surely it's not a vram issue. I mean the game isn't exactly using a huge set of unique textures from the looks of it.

Im running this on my tv. Everytime I hit option the screen goes black and then my monitor is displaying for 3 seconds and then it goes black again and now the tv is displaying. It's like my tv is restarting for a short time. Tvs brand name shows up. Never had this before with any other game.

Anyone?

Pretty good. Was around 45-50fps with the earlier driver. 57fps now with the latest 378.49. GTX1080 Hybrid, 4K, HDR off. Everything max settings with FXAA. The game defaults to HDR on for some reason, even when I had it turned off before.

Same here. Not a big deal for me though. Running on JS8500.

So, since I can get pretty much 60 FPS locked at 1440p with 1.2 resolution scale or 4K with 0.7 resolution scale, I wonder which one gives me the best IQ...

I've got a mildly overclocked 970, i5 6600k @ 4.4, 16gb DDR4 and the game is falling just short of being able to max out at 1080/60. I have to lower the shadows down to "high" to avoid major slowdown in a few specific areas. I also had to change the reflections to variable to avoid that awful static effect on flat surfaces. It runs great with everything else maxed out (except resolution scale, set to "1").

The AA options seem pretty poor... FXAA and TXAA blurs things to hell. SMAA is the only one that looked sharp to me, but it still leaves a lot of jaggies. Wasn't sure which was supposed to be the "best" option... Hopefully there will be better workarounds.

Runs flawless for me. Playing the Windows 10 version.

Thanks for sharing; would love to hear more Win10 Store opinions.

There are numerous reports that the Win10 Store version launched in lackluster form, but supposedly this was fixed via patch later in the day.

What's everybody's GPU usage at? There were some screens posted here showing 100% usage, but I'm certain on my system it wasn't that high, because once it reaches in the 80% and above, the fans become more louder. My system so far has been quiet.

I'll run afterburner and check now and update this post.

Is this game underclocking my GPU? (980ti) In the picture above it's at 912mhz. And I was playing it was in the 800mhz.

There already is for every game with Taa!

Reshade + lumasharpen will fix you right up. Bungles the ui a bit, but improves the image a ton.

Mine is around 80-90 on 1920x1080, only gets to 100 and up when I set the res scale to 1.5. VRAM limited there though. 980ti

Could there by a memory leak in this game? I was playing for 2hrs and once I reached a certain section I got some stutters and pauses. I turned it off, then starting playing again 40mins later and going around the mansion everything was smooth.

Mines high because I overclock and I have settings pushing my GPU pretty hard.

1. Gpu usage is at 80-100 at 1440p + 1.2 resolution scale. Temps are at ~65°C.

2. The game isn't underclocking your gpu. Check for temperatures while playing and hearing loud fans. Your gpu is most probably down throttling because it is getting too hot for whatever reason.

The game is extremely vram hungry with turned on shadow cache. Try turning it off.

I don't think that's the case though going by the screen I posted. GPU is at 68c, 76% usage ( while moving around it would fluctuate and go much lower) fan is on 23%. GPU is very quiet, can barely hear it.

Certain other games like assassin's creed syndicate would use 99% gpu usage and my fans would become much louder.

A gpu can also reduce its clockspeed (boost) in situations where extra compute power isn't needed. If you are still reaching 60fps, gpu load isn't at 90+%, temperature are okay and your gpu decides to run a bit slower it is fine. Your gpu is just a bit 'bored'.

So, anyone with an old Phenom II or similarly lacking SSE4.1 processor having the constant crash near the beginning of the game? My friend can't play because of it.

I might try taking their save and getting past the crash point and sending the save back after, but I have no idea if it'll work.

Has Capcom said anything about continuing to patch CPUs without SSE4.1 like they did with the demo?

It still uses all 6GBs of my 1060 w/ high shadows & cache off :/

Luckily, I haven't really come across as much stuttering; it's been very serviceable thus far.

Thought it would be fun to compare the PS4 Pro again my PC.

I was able to take away the blurriness of FXAA+TAA by using some sharpening. The game looks amazing now. Now all that this game needs is a fix to the reflections.

Did you apply the sharpening via reshape or after taking the screen?

At 1080p?

At 1080p?

I'm seeing a full 8 GB of VRAM usage through the
processing area.
Chromatic aberration and motion blur are disabled while everything else is at max settings.
1080p at 60 fps w/sync enabled.

What the hell the game put HDR on by default and when I turn it off everything becomes really bright.

My screen is a 1440p screen that's 2 years old and definitely does not support HDR...

Edit: Actually, this is what I get:

Is that normal? I might have just been surprised going from a black crushed image to that.

Edit 2: Actually compared to the pictures in the OP it is completely washed out. What do I do >.>

Edit 3: I'll try a displayport connection, see if that change anything...

Edit 4: Actually simply restarting the PC did the trick. It looks normal now.

Got three hours into the game. Towards the end, as I was approaching the
dissection room
, the game starts to horribly stall on me: a sharp drop from 50-60fps to screen froze a couple of second, then back up again. Several instances of purple screen. Turning on RTSS shows the game's wild fluctuation, starting from the time the
Molded
starts appearing. Dropping settings down a couple of notches doesn't help.

I've recorded that stream, and now restarting the rig and the fresh to eliminate any other possibilities. Let's see how this turns out.

I think i read that the HDR brightness setting gets carried over even when you disable HDR. Maybe try going to back into the settings whilst HDR is active, drop the Max brightness settings down to like 300, switch of HDR, then check again.

I'd be interested to see the difference.

Edit: Just seen your restart worked.

378.49 Nvidia Drivers definitely improved HBAO+ performance on my 970.

Now, after 4 hours something new bugs me: on a regular monitor SRGB or BT.709?
I've played with the first one and I was happy, but I've briefly tried the latter and things are wayyyys moodier. On the other hand, BT.709 has an heavy 'crushed black' appeal that is definitely not my cup of tea, while SRGB has better colors but looks like washed shit. So, I'm stuck in a lose-lose situation. :D

Game runs fine for me (80+) on a 980Ti/5820k at 1440p...

BUT...if i go into the menu via ESC...it gets locked to about 38fps (according to steam counter) and no changing of settings, resolution, refresh rate etc will fix it. I have to close and restart the whole game.

So I've got the option of playing this on the PS4 pro or with a 1080? I'm playing it tonight with my brother and and friend so I want it to be running perfectly like right now. Should I do the Pro, I'm worried about the stutter talk?

I'm playing it with a 1080 at 1440p. Minor stutter twice after 2.5 hours.

Nobody has answered me. But my VHS sections look totally fucked compared to videos I have seen online. How to fix, please? It's hurting my eyes it's so bad.

tl;dr at the very minimum, lower your Shadow settings to High and disable Shadow Caching.

Was getting the after-dinner stuttering on my 970. Suggested changes in the thread (Update driver, shut off Shadow cache, turn down textures) seem to have smoothed it out

On a 970 I would lower textures to high, shadows to high and disable shadow caching.

PSA: Turn off Shadow Cache and set shadows to High instead of Very High. This will get rid of performance degradation and stuttering.

Yeah, doesn't seem to work at all. Turned of Shadow Cache, turned down shadows and Textures to High and this game still freezes for up to 10 seconds when I turn a corner. Makes the game downright unplayable.

GTX 970
i7 3770 @3.40
10 GB RAM

Patch this soon, Capcom. I was having fun!

So i5 6600 at 3.8 ghz, GTX 1080, 16gb RAM. Runs beautifully most things maxed out but set internal resolution to .7 to try to maintain a more consistent 60. Sadly if I try to run 1440p I play in a smaller screen in middle of my TV.

is .7 of 4k roughly equivalent to 1440p?

Those 960 numbers can't be right. How is it sub-30 fps and how is the 970 four times faster?

Game seems to be severely VRAM+bandwidth limited so cards with 4GBs of VRAM are having issues and cards with less VRAM are seeing bad performance unless the settings are specifically tweaked for the fact of lack of VRAM. Thankfully the game seems to scale quite well with lower settings with 60 fps being possible even on GTX760 on low settings.

You're running with vsync on 60Hz, the GPU will lower the clocks when there's not enough work to do and this is exactly the case on your screenshot since you're already running 60 fps on 912MHz clock. You'll see your typical load clocks if you turn off the vsync.

378.49 Nvidia Drivers definitely improved HBAO+ performance on my 970.

sRGB is full range, BT.709 is limited range. So unless your monitor is set to limited color range - use sRGB.

It's running very smoothly for me, but is there a fix for HDR mode putting the game into a box? It isn't full screen, maybe due to me playing at 1440p on a 4K HDR TV.

Yes, here.

My settings are max. CA off, SSAO and SMAA.

I will say this and I don't know if it's directly applicable to your case, but I swear to god that the videos have more post-processing in the actual game than in the demo. It looks like they've added a bunch of distortion.

Maybe I'm wrong, god knows I've been wrong before, it just seems that way to me. Totally anecdotal.
