Resident Evil 7 Spoiler Thread

On my speedrun attempt the code was 1146 which was the same code used in my madhouse run. I dunno how it works, but I guess them not wanting you to sequence break makes sense.
If you enter 1146, Clancy's body will show a different number instead. I've beaten the game three times now, first time I got 1408, so next playthrouhgh I tried that but it wasn't right. So when I got to Clancy's body it said 1146 instead.

So here's one thing that's confusing me. On the 'Mia' tape, it says "Ethan, You Must Watch This" and it's dated at July 19th, 2017. Why is it dated into the future? Unless I missed something and the game is taking place in the later half of 2017?

That's correct. It's taking place late 2017.

Pretty standard for RE.

RE1 came out in 1996 and was set in July 1998.

Then RE2 and Code: Veronica were set a few months after RE1 despite coming out in 1998 and 2000.

RE6 released in 2012 and some of the game was set at early 2013.

And so on.

Mutated Jack is probably the first "shoot all the glowing orange weak points" boss I've ever loved.

I wish they went a different route with the Evaline boss. Instead of trying one up the scale and spectacle of the mutant Jack fight (which, is fitting for his final fight because of his looming presence over much of the game) and turning it into a "cinematic" fight, they should have done something unque with it. I'd love it if it were like a creepy fight in a maze like arena and she starts in the wheelchair chasing you and slowly gets more and more mutated as you damage her and she gets faster and more dangerous as she changes and stalks you around the level.

I really like the dialog from the mutated jack fight.
God Damn, the whole game should've just been him.

The thing I still find funny is how before release so many were worried about the 'stalker characters' being around too often during the game and being constantly stalked, and many people were complaining how Jack wasn't "RE enough" being just a normal dude and everything, and now that RE7 is out most wish the stalker characters and scenes were around for longer than they actually are and Jack played a bigger role than he did.

There's actually a lot less times you're being stalked than I even expected in the game before release, I knew you wouln't be stalked constantly but how little you are is still surprising. You're only really being stalked for about 10-20% of the total game length.

I thought it was fine, but that one underneath him around his tail is a bitch to hit

Yeah, that one gave me trouble. I like how it through a wrench in it though, where all the other ones are obvious and then you're wondering where the hell the last one is. But they could have given him new behaviors at that stage that exposed it more.

New discovery- the boat is total shit.

Oh yea?

I wouldn't be surprised if some of you feel this way because you burnt yourselves out. I mean, game is only out for 10 days and you guys have done four or five playthroughs. I've only done two so far and I didn't even mean to do a second one so soon, but you know, Chinese New Year, family was around.

Don't get me wrong, the rest of the game still holds up very well, even the often-lambasted mine section, and I think will continue to over time. But the ship really suffers due to the game essentially resetting your character and inventory, in addition to simply not being terribly interesting in terms of geographical design.

Also the machine gun is as good as useless on Madhouse.

I hope this director doesn't get to do RE8. We might end up with another ship.

He does seem to have a thing about the nautical theme, doesn't he?

His secret idea of auteurship no doubt.

Ships can be creepy irl, so I get that, but in games they amount to a lot of structural and artistic redundancy.

Well, to each his own, I guess. The previous few pages have people really liking the ship. Personally, I liked it too, but it was certainly a step down from the Baker mansion, but on par or just a tad below the Old House. Then again, the Baker mansion is among the GOAT tier in the entire franchise.

Also, the machine gun being useless on Madhouse is surprising. On Normal, it can kill molded with 14 shots and ammo is always abundant.

I think the ship is great except for that flashback. It ruins the flow.

Yeah I really wish it were an optional VHS tape like the others. Like just put it right in a save room so no one misses it, I don't care. I don't wanna play through it every time.

The machine gun just feels bad to use. I get that they didn't wanna make it into a full on Rambo gun and over empower players, but they could have made something a little more satisfying to shoot. Even the standard pistol with regular ammo feels better to plug molded with.

Yeah the machine gun is pure trash. I never even pick it up anymore.

I'm on the fence about the ship; I think the atmosphere is weaker than the Baker Property, obviously, but I do think the design of it is pretty tight. There were some times where I felt completely directionless though; one being when I didn't realize for a while that you'd use the screw on the elevator and forgetting where the fuse was.

(I will say though to those saying the 'Mia Tape' should be optional, I think it's obvious that the tape isn't 'real'; but rather Evie unsealing her memories.Still doesn't make it flow well, but I think it bears mentioning.)

I think where the game falls flat thematically is it never really articulates what it's trying to say about family, which games like the Last of Us or even Bioshock Infinite managed to do. It just man to "Man this creepy kid bioweapon wants a family and man isn't that fucked up?" I think it 'sorta' touches on Mia's guilt for creating her or being her caretaker, but that doesn't really amount to anything. Evie in the end just amounts to a monster to be slain. I also wish sympathy for the Bakers were handled better, as much as I did kind of like the scene with Jack generating empathy. Lucas in particular seems like he was a fuckwit before being infected; trapped a friend in the attic and let him starve to death.

I'd say the last 2 to 3 hours have a very Revelations-y feel to them. Not necessarily bad, but not as superlative as the first 5 to 7.

Sooo is there an unlock for getting all 32 documents? First playthrough and I got 31 out of 32. Fuck. I thought I explored pretty thoroughly too. I have no idea what one I missed.

Edit: And they have to patch in skippable cutscenes. How basic. You do unlocks for beating the game multiple times/in under 4 hours and you dont have skippable cut scenes? Seriously?

I'm really rethinking my original ordering of the RE series and where this game falls after getting the Platinum and playing through it six (yes, six) times in 11 days.

Originally, I put it fourth... but I think it may easily be third (behind RE4 and REmake) and could possibly even overtake REmake to be number 2. It's quite a perfect mix of old and new RE for me, but with a fresh take (first person) thrown in. I don't have any significant complaints other than enemy variety.

I'll wait until the story DLC hits to make up my mind completely, but if "Not A Hero" ends up being a 3-4 hour legit story expansion and answers a few questions the vanilla game left, this may end up being my second favorite RE game ever. That feels damn good to say after RE6 bummed me out so much.

No, you don't get anything special for it.

Zoe is the one stapling Ethan's hand back on right? When she says "don't you die on us," who is "us"? Zoe and... Mia I guess?

It could also be Jack if that flashback theory for the sane Jack scene is true.

May I know why Nightmare isn't mutiplayer?

Having this online would make it ten times better.

I laughed when people wanted this on the Switch, but I think I need one now.

Not sure why the ship is getting so much hate. To me it felt the most like classic RE. It's the least linear section of the game, forcing you to explore and backtrack occasionally. I especially think it shines in madhouse mode (without any of the unlockables) where you are severely weapon deprived and actually have to evade and improvise against common enemies.

I enjoyed the game overall immensely, enough to 100% the trophy list so far, but if I had to pick the weakest section of the game it's probably the old house. Bugs and Marge, while she give a few good jump scares, provide almost no challenge.

The only one I missed on my initial play-through was in the save room above the basement. The paper in the drawer needs to be read on both sides. You should have 22/32 before the point of no return (Mutated Jack fight)

I decided to do all collectibles/health/item chest/Mr. Everywhere/coins/speedrun on a single run. Having to do the Salt Mines entirely with the grenade launcher and 3 grenades that I couldn't use on anything other than Mr. Everywhere was........an experience. I mean I could have just finished the game, get everything except Mr. Everywhere, then reloaded, open the chest up and do the thing normally with guns and all. But NO...I wanted to do everything in that one run. Not recommended haha. Having to lure the fat fuckers away from the ladder because I couldn't attack them in any way? Nah. That was terrible.

Also, this run cemented that the ship is one of my favorite areas in the game. I love everything about that place. The map design, the open ended nature of it, the action, the fact that we are Mia. It's even more like oldschool RE, than the first half of the game IMO.

What was your time?

I recommend never even taking the regular shotty. Just get the broken one and once you are out the first repair kit is right there :D
Unless you're godly with handgun headshots or shutting doors in the faces of the molded, I think it's still best to get the regular shotgun first. Don't forget that to go outside, you need all three dog heads. And where is the last one? The boiler room where you have to face 2 molded in one room and 3 in the next. Shotgun is a godsend in those situations.

I immediately switched to the double barrel once I went outside, though. It's amazing how significant its firepower is over the regular shotgun.

Double-barreled has a pretty satisfying reloading animation.

You can dodge most of the enemies in the basement, so pistol-only is pretty viable.

Has anyone screencapped that newspaper article about the Bakers at the end of the credits?

Wonder if there's secrets in there.

The content in that 'newspaper article' isn't actually about the Bakers - its a sales brochure for the E-Series virus. No, seriously - read some of the lines in that thing. It takes about the E-Virus in a way where it is trying to sell it to potential readers.

You don't need to be godly with handguns or shutting doors in that section. You can very easily run past everything and once you go through the door that requires the dissection room key the molded will disappear. You need to choose the key from invetory fast but otherwise it isn't hard.

Shit, guess I just plain suck, then. :P

Still, the fact that we can choose to fight or run again is great. One of the best things about REmake IMO. To clarify, 4-6 encouraged you to kill everything on sight by comparison.

So Jack can't enter the scorpion door in the hall. Even if he is one step behind you, he despawns the second you you open that door.

One time he got me near that door, grabed me, charged a punch right in my face and disappered.
