Resident Evil 7 Spoiler Thread

oops...sorry, I'm so used to always marking spoilers, I'll go back and fix it

nah dude its fine, im just saying for future reference if you want to continue speculating you dont need the tags here :)

Just got the speedrun trophy--final time 3:30.
Was not as hard as I thought it would be but I found it hard to just avoid exploring since it's such a fun thing to do in these games.
Debating doing another easy run for coins/statues before I subject myself to the punishment of madhouse mode

Sub 3 hour run complete 👌🏻👌🏻

The twist at the end setting up how Umbrella got the E series makes much more sense than setting up that Chris is evil now.

Also the helicopter explicitly says "Umbrella Corporation" it ain't some offshoot or good version. It is to be a tease.

Finished the game, last part after cure Mia/zoe was boring got a full stock of weapons.

Thank god for the Mia reveal being an agent and capable of saving Ethan all by herself, so in the dream secuence it pretty much confirms Zoe and Jack are still alive.

Anyway I didnt found out the Bday tape , what did I miss I guess I had to found it before Ethan get in the trap because it was weird to omit some parts and save ethan out of nowhere.

Lucas is a bastard, he practically let his family die and did nothing for them.

How did aveline got that big, she didnt get any real fire damage or hit traume to get that mutation

In the tape you do the same puzzle but as Clancy. He gets burned alive in the end.

Okay, I took a shit ton of screenshots of RE7's credits to read through later. They do have Steam compression, but here they are. Haven't looked through them yet myself so may be repeated stuff, just uploaded and posted them all here now:

(warning, bunch of images, but I think it's best to be on display like this as probably super related to the spoiler topic)

EDIT: Looking, there's a lot of repeating text in the images. I think you can see most of it all clearly in the last four shots, so edited to just these four pics:

Just finished the game a few moments ago. Took the time out to watch the Zoe ending, and in a way, I think that ending actually makes more sense than the 'Good' ending. Anyways, some quick thoughts:

Loved the opening hours of this game. It's tense, it's spooky, it's scary, it's completely unexpected and shocking with how quickly you find Mia and how she turns on you. Loosing your hand had me honestly thinking I was about to change characters and that the whole thing was about to go down a MGS2 route.

From there, the game is still great - but falls into more action game tropes than I expected. Playing on normal, and with average aim, I never felt that I needed to run to avoid monsters. The few times I did was more out of a need of not wanting to waste the time. This has the side effect of sapping the game of some of it's tension. Sure I still tensed up when I saw them, and I was always scouring for supplies - but it was never actually an issue.

The tone is also a bit miscommunicated. This is more a matter of the demo informing the game, I think - but having played the Beginning Hour demo more than a few times I was expecting a more straight faced take on horror than what the full game turned out to be. Specifically - some of Jack's dialogue, and the weird ability for you to loose a limb and reattach it via pouring some first aid over it. It's not entirely over the top - just has more shades of Evil Dead in it than I was expecting.

I also really struggled with a loss of momentum when you shift from Ethan to Mia on the ship. You go from having a huge arsenal to nothing, and while I get the tension that is supposed to inform this design choice - all it really did was test my patience. The monsters had long stopped being scary at this point, so it was more a matter of running around trying to avoid them while looking for whatever trinket I was supposed to find. Eventually the Mia section recovers nicely - basically once you get to her flashback tape - and perhaps it was partly how I choose to stop and start my sessions around this break - but I was really not feeling this 'reset' while it originally played out.

The ending also feels... underdeveloped. You get back in control of Ethan and the next few sections are mostly bland caves with lots of monsters. But again, at this point you are so over powered that it's less scare filled and more a matter of executing with the tools you have. Then it just kind of ends. The game subtly seems to be prepping you for a massive fight as you pick up rocket launcher rounds, and lots of machine gun ammo - to have the final fight won with a block button and some pistol ammo.

Still - these are all nit picks. I really enjoyed my time with the game. I'm contemplating running through on the Madhouse difficulty as I think it might address some of my tension points above, and it was also just a really neat (if dark) world to explore.

Really fun game, and a lovely return to the roots of the series. I played 5 briefly, and never bothered with 6, so this was a really great 'welcome back' so to speak.

Despite looking like newspaper, it's actually a catalog for potential purchasers for "The Product" (Eveline) and it's applications. It also states how if she isn't given injections, she'll start rapidly aging at 25x speed.

Thinking more about it, the Bakers (with the exception of Lucas) have to be the most tragic characters in RE games since Lisa Trevor.

It's pretty much the same text from last page reposted over and over on all articles in the credits. It does flesh out most of the explainations. I suppose Mia and the Other guy were her handlers, although I don't get why they didn't get an immunity shot if this was the case.

Yeah. But why not just list him as "Redfield" instead of the full thing? He didn't give his first name.
Maybe the credits guy was duped

I like how the end credits explain the Grandma thing. They must not have horror movies in the RE universe though because who would design a bioweapon like a little girl. She'd stick out like a sore thumb almost literally anywhere and is super spooky.

See I read that a couple days ago and almost spoiled it for myself. But why would he say "I'm Redfield"?

Why does he give Ethan a gun only S.T.A.R.S. members own if he's not Chris? And if he is Chris, why is he working for Umbrella? And assuming this Umbrella's intentions aren't in-line with those of Spencer or Wesker's Umbrella, what's its purpose? Do they collect BOW samples, or capture BOWs (and eliminate what can't be contained)?

Redfield's appearance raises as many questions as were answered in the leadup to his cameo.

It's Wesker's old gun, that's why it was renamed. Or it's based on Weskers old gun and now shoots antifungal powder, that's why it's clear that the one you can use in the story is only a replica.

By god you're right

Thank got it repeats itself a lot otherwise thats a lotta reading

Product = E-Series/Eveline

-Chemical transference of compounds via skin to skin

-Without the Stabilizing Compound Product will age rapidy - x25 than normal

-Product mutates plants and promotes growth of Mold

-Mold can potentially revive the recently deceased. Not been tested.

-Product should have at least two handlers, equipped with serum and tracking device. Product imprints on handlers as a relative

-Product becomes insane and dangerous

Yeah that's about it

I wanted "Local Umbrella Man Saves Day" dammit!

It also says that the E-Series can control minds and induce violence, with applications that "vary from political to military to economic destabilization". It also talks about finding a buyer in the Americas ASAP, so despite how horrifying it was, Eveline wanting a family and driving the Bakers insane was probably the best case scenario of her getting loose or even being used as instructed.

I think there are more models than her, she was just the first

Ending 2 is by choosing Zoe? I had a save there, so I killed the boss again, chose her, got a short little new scene and then it's back to Mia on the boat and I really don't feel like playing that again now.

By the way, in this route, Mia says something like "You forget, I still have a job to do", which imo only reinforces the whole "Ethan isn't just a random dude and he and Mia are into something larger" theories around.

Mia is an agent from a unknown corporation , probably Umbrella rival who ada sent the samples in past games. I think Ethan never knew about her job

Friend and I just finished our shared playthrough. Took us ten hours. Fucking amazing. Don't even know where to begin.

We flipped a coin on Mia vs. Zoe since we both were so heavily for one or the other (I Mia, he Zoe). Zoe won, smfh.

Biggest questions right now are what the hell happened to Lucas? In the good ending, how does Mia get taken over by Evaline even though she was given the serum? How does she magically show up in the chopper at the end? Why did Evaline start aging all of a sudden and not move at all until the end of the game?

Also, I felt bad as fuck when Evaline cried out "Why does everyone hate me?"... Even if she did turn into a huge murderous monster seconds after.

He definitely was suspicious. It's likely that they met in the bioweapons biz since one of the high level Umbrella scientists was "Ethan W"

Lucas ran off into his salt mine base and got away (and will hopefully become the next multiple game evil antagonist with a clone army). Mia was infected again, I don't think they were planning to run into Evie. Dunno about the last part tho. The aging thing is shown to be a side effect of not getting proper injections in the credits, presumably she doesn't move to fool you.

Lucas escaped, Eveline didnt start aging all of a sudden, she had been aging for awhile, she had accelerated aging as seen in a email, and dont forget Mia had been missing 3 years so we can assume her and Eveline had been with the Bakers for abiut 2-3 years. Why she didnt move is because she was being a little creepy faker and actually near yiu throughout the game.

Spencer's Notebook said:
I just received word that Raccoon City has been wiped out. The Americans finally took action against us. I hope the irony of using the very military machine that was supposed to protect them from foreign attackers to kill their own people is not lost on them. While the danger posed by the threat of the T-Virus spreading was very real, I don’t think Americans will easily forgive their government for the deaths of over 100,000 of their own people. If the truth of this matter is ever brought to light, support for the current administration will plummet. I don’t think he wants that.

Even a child can see that they will come after Umbrella with everything they have. To hide their own foolish mistakes, they will blame Umbrella for Raccoon City’s annihilation. It would seem Umbrella will share Raccoon City’s fate, but perhaps it will be to a lesser degree. Umbrella was nothing but a tool for the research of the Progenitor virus. Even without that tool, the research still survives. Only Umbrella’s lowly employees will be hurt by its dissolution.

If the secret research involving the Progenitor virus is protected, then I can always rebuild anew. I’ve already made preparations for such a plan. The research facility in Africa remains a secret, and it is there that the Progenitor virus is produced, something that we didn’t achieve until the late 80s. Only a handful of people in the company are even aware of the African facility’s existence thanks to our strict regulation of the flow of information. Only a minimum amount of personnel were ever transferred from Africa to other locations, and they were always closely monitored.

Director Bailey has been confined to the African facility for almost 30 years, and even that has all been for this day. All that remains is to close that facility and everything will go according to my plan. Once that facility is gone, all its connections to Umbrella will disappear with it. Then I will have to deal with anyone who has a Level 10 security clearance as they are the only ones who know of the African facility’s existence. Everyone else will be summarily disposed of.

My secrets will be protected. When one buries a treasure, one should not leave behind a map.

(A printout is stuck inside the notebook.)

Hmm I'm gonna say coincidence, or Ethan has seen some shit and faked his death. Probably the former.

So what happened to Lucas?

Road a boat off to DLC Land

Idk they could have came up with any name for him. I think the developers probably put a lot more thought into some of this stuff than we give them credit for. They did have a lot of time to think things through after 6.

Hey wait so Andre says the family disappeared three years ago and the house has been abandoned since. So why are the cops calling the house if they think it's abandoned...?

...and I mean it's obvious at least Jack has been going to town for supplies, since there's a shopping receipt in the kitchen

Or...did Zoe make the phone call to distract Jack from you at the dinner table and then maybe called the Deputy as a further distraction...? idk

Yeah, I pointed out the similarities between it and Wesker's Samurai Edge the other day.

Also, the one you use in NG+ is the replica. The one you use in the story mode is the real deal.

Didnt Jack ordered some repairing on the main hall too, unless the house is on a plantation and the cops were lazy enough to no check the house often

Yeah he contracted work for the shadow puzzle in the main hall...unless that was Lucas' idea...OH MY GOD ALL THE STUPID RE PUZZLES MIGHT BE LUCAS' DOING

What about the entire village in Resident Evil 4? The credits show them living their lives before the plagas :(. They weren't always evil asshole villagers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_weHtgqZ5Bs

Capcom puts a lot of effort into the RE lore. It is surprisingly consistent and thought out. Most confusion stems from mistranslations/localization changes.

Man, that's fucked?.

What's the D series? Was the D-series as a whole a failure? Who's the corporation making these things? Is Eveline some test tube bby?

Man, after watching the good ending in it's entirety, it's immensely jarring and disappointing how Mia just randomly shows up in the chopper at the end. I mean, I love the fact that she survives, but it just feels so odd. Would have been fucking amazing if curing her meant she was with you at the end, taking on Evaline by your side. Major blunder if you ask me.

Pretty sure she's there because Umbrella is interested in her

I get that, that Umbrella went and got her I guess while Ethan was going through the house and taking on Evaline. I just think it would have been way cooler to have Ethan and Mia together for the final battle.

D-series are those little gross babies in the cases, D lead to E which was I guess was successful.

Sounds like HCF(Hive Capture Force) had something to do with those experiments, at least initially, to some extent. HCF was the paramilitary group that attacked Rockfort Island, led by Wesker in CODE: Veronica, probably one of the more mysterious organizations in RE.

Yea, the D series are the dead babies but I guess that means the series was a failure huh?

I don't even remember HCF

Most probably don't lol

The only actual mention of them was on Wesker's status screen in the CVX Battle Mode, I'm kinda surprised they'd bring back something that damn obscure!
