Resident Evil 7 Spoiler Thread

So like, the company (Tentsu?) that Mia works for who is responsible for the necrotoxin is a shell for New Umbrella, right? Which means she's an Umbrella agent. At least this is what I began to assume when I played through the ship.

I think there are just a lot of Umbrella-like nasty corps out there post the big bad Umbrella getting dismantled/decimated and Wesker dying. I mean hell, RE6 has us believing a cloned Ada could set up a new Umbrella no problem. Not everyone was as attached to the name.

It just remains to be seen if that is Chris at the end, if thats a new 'good' Umbrella or the same ol' evil one back to fuck shit up all over again.

It clearly isn't Chris, imo. No reason for them to change the character model, no reason for him to call himself by his surname if he's actually Chris.

Plus Chris would never work for Umbrella.

I think it's a much safer assumption that this guy is someone else.

There definitely isn't a reason. But it feels like a case to me where capcom just fucked up.

I don't see them fucking up something so important/simple as a long term character, especially after producing such a well made and carefully considered game.

And I don't see it being a considered design change either.

It's a main line entry, they've shown no other desire to re-boot anything aside from the gameplay and making this particular story about a fringe event on the relative outskirts of the RE universe instead of running with the usual crew. If they had wanted to re-boot certain stuff, I'm fairly certain they wouldn't have done it so awkwardly.

It just makes no sense. It would be really, really odd to re-design a character like that, in the 7th entry, for no good reason.

I just don't buy it.

If it's actually Chris then they really fucked up.

Fan theories that it's HUNK tricking Ethan into a false sense of security being untrue makes it really sad if it's the former. The model would make a ton of more sense if it was HUNK but this is Capcom.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Umbrella been gone for a while now in the timeline? I never played RE2 or 3, but RE4 rook the series in a radically different direction in terms of the plot, with Napoleon and his creepy friend as the major antagonists. Even when Wesker came back in a major appearance in 5, it wasn't in association with Umbrella. If you are referring to U-corps, I was under the impression that they are mercenaries and not exactly a group of underground bio terrorists.

Umbrella is dead, but because its such an important and popular part of the franchise they keep bringing it back in some way.

I think RE4 plot would be almost the same without needing to kill off Umbrella so soon,Capcom made a mistake there.

I saw this post before you edited it and was about to ask if you were behuhu the rubhive :P

God damn it.

Playing the game on madhouse, I get to the final fight with eveline with barely any ammo. I had to redo the mine gauntlet so I had enough :/

Funny thing, if you let Jack cut your leg and you let the fungus monster cut your let you can see your leg marking before it chops your leg again, Ethan just sighs in horror and just put the medicine right on the marking and stand up

There are still Halos in Halo, RE needed another villain to fight, Umbrella was gone, tricel lasted one game and the other lower companies are not interesting enough to be on the spot yet

So that was Chris Redfield at the end of the game? What the hell did they do to his design? Didn't look anything like Chris, which had me questioning if there was another Redfield entering the playing field.

EDIT: They also went with an another voice actor, too. Not the same guy who has been playing him for years. If they had been basing his design on his likeness, then I can understand why they changed it. He just looks too young, too though. He's in his 40s now.

That aside, I loved everything else about the game. It was so well designed and put together. Have to give that Madhouse Difficulty a shot, which sounds like it's going to be incredibly hard to complete.

JP voice actor for 'Redfield' is the person who has done Chris for the last 15 years though.

This situation is like MGSV all over again.

Thanks Mikami.

I'm anxious to see any mods with fixed cameras for the Mia flashback sequence. It would be cool if instead of a magical go-pro, it's imagined as security footage from corners of the ship.

So I just finished the Chainsaw Jack fight, is there anything else in this game as frustrating as that cause I was about ready to walk away.

Yep,the next boss is a troll boss who will make you waste your ammo if you dont get the mechanics and the next one have some thin weak spots

Yep. These new, more realistic character designs in RE7 are awful compared to the more stylized designs from previous games. They look boring and generic, and make the game feel like it happens in a different universe, separate from the rest of the series.

Okay. So I'm definitely on board with this on not being Redfield now. I've been reading into the whole 'Hunk' theory and it sounds pretty damn plausible. And even if it isn't Hunk, there's too many clues that it's someone other than Chris.

Yeah, the credits do specifically say 'Chris Redfield', but that could be Capcom's way of just throwing us off or Chris will be present in the game at some other point.

Finished the game a few days ago. Some things that I didn't quite understand:

- What happened to Lucas? The guys on the radio said he retreated to the mines, but nothing beyond that. Maybe he'll be a boss fight in DLC when playing as Chris?

- When fighting Jack with his scissor chainsaws, I got my right leg cut off. I simply attached it and poured medicine on it. Similar to the hand, it just fucking reattaches. Wtf? I figured Ethan was infected like everyone else, but there was no mention of this. He never got an antidote and never got controlled by Evie.

- The "vision" of Jack and Zoe where Jack explains that Evie is the one making them insane... what's with that? That happens after Jack had died. Is it all in Ethan's head? Is it real? A flashback before the dinner (though, that'd still make no sense)?

- What's the deal with Umbrella? It has been awhile since I played the prior RE's, but didn't Umbrella cease to exist as a company after the Raccoon City bombing? Why would Chris Redfield be a part of the new Umbrella after his stint with BSAA?

- Did Ethan know about Mia's job, what she did, who she worked for? Was Mia an agent for Umbrella? Tricell?

- The theme song 'Go Tell Aunt Rhody' seems out of place, though I like the song. There's not even anyone named Aunt Rhody in the game!

We don't know what happened to Lucas. We might find out in the DLC.

Ethan is infected, that's why he sees hallucinations of Evie, but she hasn't been connected to him long enough to control him. The First Aid Med has regenerative properties, which is why it can reattach an arm or leg. It's a bit far-fetched in reality, but not at all far-fetched in the world of resident evil where Bio-weapons have been around for 25 years or so.

- The "vision" of Jack and Zoe where Jack explains that Evie is the one making them insane... what's with that? That happens after Jack had died. Is it all in Ethan's head? Is it real? A flashback before the dinner (though, that'd still make no sense)?
Unlike Margarete, Jack's body doesn't crumble to dust after it calcifies, so one explanation is that his mind is somehow still alive within Evie. In any case, we don't know if the scene was real or imagined.

- What's the deal with Umbrella? It has been awhile since I played the prior RE's, but didn't Umbrella cease to exist as a company after the Raccoon City bombing? Why would Chris Redfield be a part of the new Umbrella after his stint with BSAA?
We don't know. The whole point is to throw the audience for a loop, theoretically as a hook for the DLC.

- Did Ethan know about Mia's job, what she did, who she worked for? Was Mia an agent for Umbrella? Tricell?
Ethan almost certainly didn't know about Mia's job. In the first video, she says she was simply babysitting. Then in the second video she says that she'd been lying and tells him to stay away.

- The theme song 'Go Tell Aunt Rhody' seems out of place, though I like the song. There's not even anyone named Aunt Rhody in the game!
It's a take on an old folk song, "The Old Grey Goose is Dead" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqvbBZlyTpY

So just completed it and have a question, Why is Chris Redfield working for Umbrella now????

Funny but has anyone ever played Umbrella Corps? How does the story in that one go? It has Chris and Leon atleast in there somewhere right? And Chris looks different there too :D

The Umbrella logo is the same one, just different colour. It's not the classic logo. Did something happen to Umbrella in that game?

Those DNA looking symbols in the logo are actually the same shape as the vials of the Antivirus to the T-virus if I'm not mistaken.

Maybe New-Umbrella is actually good and trying to rid the world of BoW's? I know it's a reach and they appear to be behind Evie.... but? you never know

Plus if Evie was the old lady all along - maybe she was infected like 20 years previous and umbrella just want to clear up their old mess

The way I remember it is that Eveline wasn't infected; she was created. They purposely avoid saying which company it was (it's redacted in the file), but she was the 5th in the line (E-series) of bio-weapons created to infiltrate the enemy and take control of them. The serum is made out of the cells in the 4th of the line (D-series, presumably there were A, B and C-series as well).

Eveline wasn't an old woman. One of the properties of the way the weapons were designed was that they aged rapidly (I don't remember if was mentioned that it was a defect or if it was by design). So even though she has the appearance of an old woman, she's likely in her teens or younger.

Well that buggers my theory haha. Cheers for that. I love the deep story of the Resi games.

So I just finished the Chainsaw Jack fight, is there anything else in this game as frustrating as that cause I was about ready to walk away.

Yeah, the next area is kinda of a pain in the ass imo.
About the boss fight with Jack, just kick body bags to cancel his attacks then attack him while he is staggered and repeat until he is dead.

JP voice actor for 'Redfield' is the person who has done Chris for the last 15 years though.
Umm Chris hasn't had a Japanese voice for 15 years.
Revelations was the first game with a Japanese dub, he is listed for REmake because the REmaster added a Japanese option.

Also Japanese voice doesn't really mean anything especially after THAT case....

REmake atleast has credited JP voice actors though and that came out 2002. Unless they added that on HD remaster.

What case?

Yeah, that's basically what I did. It\s tough though, the fight is long and sometimes it's hard to actually get the bags to go in the direction you want them to. He can kill you surprisingly quickly too.

Quick question, apologies if it's already been asked.

The default code for the door is 1408. I know that if you try that code initially, it then switches to 1146 when you find the note.

What happens if you try both of those before finding the note? Does it switch again, simply not work, or something else ... ?

My face right now

I'm doing another run through right now. I'll do it and see what happens.

That Lucas' report in the lab pretty much ruined the plot twist about granny being Evelyn,i wish i haven't found it tbh.
I think it was really cool idea that the final boss was just right there from the start.

Umbrella Corps aren't good guys. They're owned by Sheng-Ya who are - shocker - in to dodgy shit themselves. NewsBot did a good summary here: https://www.reddit.com/r/residentev...avenly_island_shenya_pharmaceutical_umbrella/

They're a cleanup crew no different to HUNK's Umbrella crew years back. Literally no different. Chris working for them would require a complete change from hero to villain status cos he wouldn't be that fucking dumb to switch over just cos he wanted a career change. He should be very aware of who Sheng-Ya is and that they're another Umbrella, Tricell, etc.

Maybe they offered a deal for Chris that if he does good they will bring Piers back.

The Umbrella Corporation logo on the helicopter looks like a shield. (it also looks different than the original logo from the black and white picture you find) My guess is that the "new" Umbrella Co is cleaning up the messes created by the decades of a bioweapons armsrace between different companies. Maybe the BSAA was disbanded?

I agree with this because the added symbols are the same shape as the 'antivirus' was for the T virus in previous Resi games and the Resi movies.

It explains why Chris works for them

As some people have pointed out before, it's the Umbrella Corps logo:

Only blue instead of red.

Maybe he's being blackmailed into helping them. idk Claire is hostage or something
