what is the best version ?

Dreamcast original version
Code vero X PS2
Code vero X GC
PSN/XBLA

,,,, I own the ps2 version

PSN/XBLA has upgraded lighting and between those two, I think XBLA is superior unless PSN got patched to be on par?

I've completed it on the Dreamcast, Ps2 and played a little of the PSN version. I'd guess it depends on what you mean by best, but technically, it's maybe the PSN version. They made some pretty big improvements to the lighting, it's in widescreen and I never heard much about it being a bad port or being particularly unfaithful.

There're probably people far more qualified to answer than me though.

The lighting in the HD version makes the game nearly unplayable. If you can, PCSX2 with the widescreen hack is the best way. You'll see a few unrendered things you aren't supposed to but it's worth it.

X on Dreamcast if you don't count he HD version.

But I prefer the HD version really, looked pretty good on HDTV. Despite some issues it has.

If I remember correctly.....

XBLA > PSN > Dreamcast* > Gamecube > PS2

* = Code Veronica X was only released on Dreamcast in Japan, the original release is missing some Wesker cutscenes and I only rank the DC version better than the Gamecube due to the VGA support of the Dreamcast version.

Basically, buy it on XBLA or PSN to get the best looking versions with all the content.

EDIT: Forgot about the VMU support Dreamcast = Automatic winner.

the VMU is useful in this game ?

Health is displayed while keeping the tv screen hudless. Saves you having to pause the game to check health during a boss battle. The game is also slow paced enough to let you glance at the controller without it affecting gameplay.

I can't remember if ammo was displayed, too. I know it was in RE2 and RE3 Dreamcast ports but I think CV was just health.

If money wasn't a concern, I'd probably play the Dreamcast version hooked up with a VGA box (note that only the JPN and US versions have VGA support, it was dropped from the EU version). I thought most of the changes made for X were dumb, and I think it looks a little better than the GCN or PS2 version, and the VMU status screen is a dumb but appreciated bonus.

For a normal human being (ie, someone who hasn't played the game before), the HD version on the system of your choice is probably the right way to go. The PS3 version has worse graphics, but its basically a wash.

That was just RE2. RE3 has the same EKG line shown in Code Veronica

Resident Evil Code: Veronica Kanzenban (Complete Version) via VGA box.

Personally I'd say the original Dreamcast version, simply because I dislike every single addition and alteration they made to the cutscenes in CV Complete/X.

Otherwise, they're all pretty much the same, barring the fancy lighting in the HD version.

Dolphin/NullDC with widescreen.

HD versions aren't that great. They adjusted the colors and black levels into some weird palette that doesn't fit the game's graphics, which are almost untouched. Textures are terrible, whereas with Dolphin you can mask their flaws and your image won't look like a murky mess to boot.

I finished the Dreamcast version and can say it's better compared to the PS2 version. The PS2 version has this annoying motion blur that's even present when no motion is being done.

The only thing I hate about the Dreamcast version is the Dreamcast itself for its loud optical drive.

Weird, I really need to check this out. Never played the vanilla DC version.

I love the new cut scene with wesker :)

- Dolphin might not run it perfect if you don't have fast enough HW.
- NullDC.. well.. unless you know Japanese you'll be playing the original version instead of X.
- Which leaves PCSX2, which runs the game pretty fantastically on average HW!

About the HD versions, I agree with you. For the longest time I was mistaken that the new lighting would make them the definitive versions, but recently I watched a bunch of videos of the HD versions on youtube and the game now is super dark, the new shadows don't look that nice since it's low poly models that cast them, and the colors in the early graveyard scene don't even match the colors of the FMV.. They should have made a straight port instead of trying to "enhance" the graphics by making them dark and saturated to hide their age.

The PSN/XBLA version is great. All the content, sharp graphics (though not 1080, or 60 FPS for that matter) and an improved lighting engine.

The only downside is that the CGI movies in the game are skewered to an awkward angle to try and make them set well with the 16:9 viewing ratio for the game.

Honestly I believe the original needed something in terms of lighting or color because the original is fairly dull when compared to every title other than the original. However, something seems to have gone wrong with the fmv crop, because the framerate slows down and stutters which i'm guessing occurred when they rendered it.

Today I finished Code Veronica X and it immediately took place in my personal list of the best games ever (alongside RE 1 Remake and RE 4).

I've just realized I played it at 720@30 on a 4k TV and didn't pay attention on the graphics and performance, the game is too good to bother.
