Retro considered a new Metroid game.... made DK.

How did Nintendo think this was a worthwhile announcement compared to what people were clamoring for? Regardless of the title's quality, IT IS NOT A TENTPOLE TITLE. You hear people scream for Mario, Zelda, and Metroid, but not Donkey Kong!

And then there was Reggie on GameTrailers, grin on his face, telling Keighly that Donkey Kong was the big announcement that was going to drive people toward the Wii U. I just don't understand Nintendo. Something has got to be going on over there because this stuff feels beyond reasoning.

This may shock you, but Donkey Kong sells far more than Metroid could ever hope to.

Metroid is incredibly far from being a tentpole title or franchise. It sells to Nintendo fans and little else.

Nintendo could have signed this out to any number of other developers. This is not what Retro should be doing at all.

It's frankly disturbing that so many people seem to think that making great platformers is somehow easy and that anybody can do it.

Interested to see how many of the now Android, iOS casual gamers that bought this on Wii, will be buying a Wii U for it.

Is it? How long did EAD1 work on Jungle beat? I have a feeling they could do a better job in less time than Retro.

Damn, man, they would have made Metroid if Other M hadn't been such a commercial fuck-up.

Agreed.

Hmmm, follow-up to a critically praised and commercially successful game, or one of the biggest disappointments from the Wii-era that I had no part in creating in the first place, what would I choose?

Developers are all special and unique snowflakes who should only do what they know is best for themselves.

Until the day comes when they make a game you didn't want them to make. Then they can burn in hell.

Such is life.

Good, yes I am eager as well for the Metroid series to be fixed after the fuck up that was Other M yet it can wait, I have waited so fucking long for a new Donkey Kong Country game and I'm glad we are getting more than 1 platformer out of Retro after the long hiatus.

I was hoping for another revival of a old franchise or a new IP. The biggest issue is how they hyped it for the gamer types on GAF.

He made the right choice. Metroid fans threw Retro under the bus when Other M was getting hyped up and Donkey Kong Country is Nintendo's best platformer series.

Now bring back the KREMLINS!

I already tweeted my rage at them.

Totally disappointed. Wii U could have used the diversity a new Metroid title would have brought to the system, instead, Wii U is getting another samey action/platformer. great.

edit: my guess is laziness. reuse assets and save costs.

I have no problem with Retro making DKC2. I've never been a fan of Metroid, and DKC2 looks like it'll be a fun platformer. One of the games I'd pick up with a Wii U if I would buy one this year.

After that, I hope they do something new.

Dkcr sold 6 million copies

DKCR sold pretty much the same as their Metroid trilogy. People always seem to forget how niche the Meroid franchise is.

Sure, it sold well. Nothing to dispute there. But will DK move consoles? I highly doubt that. (But who knows? Maybe I'm wrong and Nintendo really is tapping into some huge love of DK.) In comparison, I would guarantee Metroid would move consoles with the hardcore. It might not move people in droves, but it's the kind of series that certainly would have an effect.

i think you are thinking from a neogaffer perspective. think from a mom goes to Best Buy to buy the kids a videogame perspective.

Maybe they should have considered something new. I love Metroid, but Nintendo shot it right through the goddamn heart with Other M. It could use a break.
The game is looking pretty good, people are disappionted because the ycreated crazy expectations that Retro would do something that would catch the western market.

In a sense that's exactly what they did, but not what people were expecting.
No, it is not. It's like saying that EAD managed to catch the western market with NSMBU. No, they did not and this will not.

The primes are some of my favorite games ever, but we had 3 of those.

I'm totally down for more DKC by the retro team. I hope people's expectations don't hurt what looks to be a superb game.

I can see a mom buying the new Donkey Kong if the kids already own a Wii U. I honestly can't see her buying Wii U because of Donkey Kong.

Why not make a sequel to DK64, an open world platformer? People are not pissed because they choose DK over Metroid, they're pissed because they choose (or Nintendo forced on them) the easier, cheaper, less exciting way to go about it.

Retro have proved to be able to craft amazing, expansive game worlds, just put some other team to work on 2d platformers, it's the only genre the WiiU is not lacking anyway.

Well I had hopes that we would see a new IP from Retro or at the very least a new Metroid but instead we got DK. Absolute waste of a talented developer.

At first I wanted their first Wii U game to be another Metroid, but now I don't mind so much.

However, for their second game I really want them to either do Metroid or a new IP.

I'm tired of Metroid Prime.

Glad they did another DKC game to make amends for their waggle fest on the Wii.

So the choice was between Metroid and Donkey Kong?

Some choice. New IP wasn't in the options at all?

Nintendo doesn't really do new big budget IPs. What was the last one? Outside of DL titles and Wii line games?

maybe they'll start working on metroid after they complete Tropical Freeze, but it's disheartening they only get those two choices though. Time to face reality I suppose.

Somebody should look into Nintendo's bonus policies where Retro are concerned. If they deal out bonuses for certain sales goals.... well, I'd probably say Donkey Kong too if I were Retro.

Still, as a fan, the only thing I wanted LESS from Retro was Star Fox (or Star Fox X Metroid).

I'm not a huge fan of DKC, but I can easily see why Retro are making this game. Nintendo rarely leaves a stone unturned if they produce a great original which perhaps had to have some interesting ideas put to one side. Galaxy, Pikmin, Phantom Hourglass, Metroid Prime, Epic Yarn. I'm sure their next game will be something different. Besides, the talent which created Metroid Prime has long since left the studio. They're probably still in a transition phase.

For the time being I guess people will have to begrudgingly give this game a 9/10 again. A symptom of any reaction to much of what Nintendo does these days "It's an amazing game, but I wish it was something even better."

I'm totally fine with this. Now, let someone else do a DKCR3 and get to doing something that isn't DK or Metroid. I'd be fine with a new IP, Starfox or whatever. Something more differentiated from the rest of Nintendo, since you have shown you CAN.

It's not like Metroid fans didn't have things pretty good. They got 3 Prime games in a pretty short period.

I'm delighted to have another DK game but I think their next game should be something different.

Seeing as we've had more good Metroid games than good DK platformers, I don't really understand why people care. Honestly, it's more disappointing that they aren't doing something entirely new.

Hmm...
-Retro announces DKCR 2
-Complains they didn't get the total freshness that would have been Metroid Prime 4

So much as making one sequel to DKCR is too much, but a third Metroid Prime game is still fine? Don't really get the logic at all.

And if you think Tropical Freeze is lazy at all and simply reuising assets and stuff, you really must not have seen much media of the game. The difference between it and Returns really does seem night and day, IMO. Also, following the same logic, even if they were to make a Metroid Prime 4, wouldn't it also just reuse assets from Prime 3 due to laziness and to save costs? Being a sequel apparently inherently means that, so...

A 3D platformer in the Donkey Kong universe in the vein of Super Mario 64 to satisfy the demand for a Mario game closer to 64 would have been fantastic..

Alas they made a sound business decision in terms of building install base however that install base is going to skew younger now with Wind Waker, Donkey Kong and Mario 3D World as the big holiday titles.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind seeing a new Donkey Kong Returns game, I enjoyed the one on the Wii (though frankly I still prefer the SNES versions).

I still really wanted to see what Retro could do with a new IP. It is Nintendo's only notable Western Developer at this point, so seeing them stuck with just 2D Donkey Kong and some Mario Kart 7 maps, coming off their Metroid Prime series just feels like their talent is being underutilized.

I really think Nintendo should expand Retro. I think if Nintendo had a Rare-like developer to create IPs to complement Nintendo's it would definitely help with a lot of software issues they are having.

I ain't even mad. Donkey Kong all day

If people are going to be disappointed, be disappointed that they're not working on a new IP. They made a Metroid trilogy already for fuck sake

I'm sure the new DKC game will be very good, but a new Metroid game probably would have sold me the system. I still wouldn't mind seeing a new 2D Metroid title on 3DS or Wii U, or both damn it.

I would have prefered a new IP, but I would have been very happy with Metroid. To me, the jump in technology between the Wii and Wii U was more interesting for Metroid than it was for Donkey Kong Country.

And I still think Retro is wasted on 2D platformers.
