Retro considered a new Metroid game.... made DK.

I hope they try their hand at Starfox. I hate that Nintendo is playing it so safe when it comes to first party stuff. That isn't going to revive the Wii U, it won't create any buzz.

I hear you, but I think unfortunately it's sadly time to accept that Star Fox might just be dead at this point. :( I mean, Star Fox certainly didn't turn things around for the Gamecube at all and it wasn't stuff like Star Fox 64 3D that started turning things around for the 3DS at all and instead just got pretty much ignored. I mean, I feel you, but I really doubt Star Fox would be the thing that would be able to turn things around for the Wii U--if anything can still do that at all at this point, it would be stuff like Mario, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, and Donkey Kong, but not stuff like Star Fox.

Kind of stupid, but I think it's funny how the title has "Tropic" in it. It's almost as if it's a deliberate reference to those dumb Startropics rumors.

Nintendo should have bought Free Radical, I could see a Metroid game from them working very well. Plus we'd have Timesplitters back.

I think this is some reassuring news because this indicates that retro isnt being pushed by nintendo what to do but has some sort of freedom on what to choose. If that is true then I think nintendo handles their relaitons pretty well especcially in these difficult times for wii u which needs way more games.
Secondly, this might bode well for theire next project, which I hope will be an awesome 1080p 60 fps next gen metroid prime 4, i can live with that ;)

I adore the Metroid Prime series; particularly the Prime games, but come on, they made three Prime games back to back.

It's time for the Donkey Kong franchise to get some love. God knows Nintendo were doing fuck all worthwhile with it since Rare left.

That "insider" who said it was Star Tropics must be feel awesome for guessing the game was about a tropical island.

How did Nintendo think this was a worthwhile announcement compared to what people were clamoring for? Regardless of the title's quality, IT IS NOT A TENTPOLE TITLE. You hear people scream for Mario, Zelda, and Metroid, but not Donkey Kong!

And then there was Reggie on GameTrailers, grin on his face, telling Keighly that Donkey Kong was the big announcement that was going to drive people toward the Wii U. I just don't understand Nintendo. Something has got to be going on over there because this stuff feels beyond reasoning.

Nintendo and Retro's choice:

A) Go with the series (Metroid) which had the last title surrounded in claims of misogyny; caused a massive rift in the fanbase; had a below average score for a Metroid title; and was a sales failure (it apparently didn't even break 500,000). Also keep in mind this is a franchise that usually scores well under 2 million sales.

B) Go with the series (Donkey Kong) where the last entry was already made by the current company; was a sales success (5 million+ copies); was a critical success; and brought Donkey Kong back into the spot light. It's also a series which has over double the lifetime sales as a series over the other franchise.

Doesn't really seem like that difficult of a choice.

It sounds like they themselves were considering making either a new Metroid or a new DKC, and they chose DKC. For some reason I don't think Nintendo made them choose, it sounds like Retro had all the freedom.

Relax, guys, they can make Metroid next. Maybe all the practice they got doing the sidescrolling DKC games will pay off and they can finally deliver that next great 2-D Metroid we've all been craving.

I was hoping for another revival of a old franchise or a new IP. The biggest issue is how they hyped it for the gamer types on GAF.
Oh? By all means, point out the incidence of Retro reps coming around here to stoke those fires.

Forumgoers whipped themselves into a frenzy based solely upon rampant, baseless speculations, and that's somehow Retro's fault?

I would much rather have a new Donkey Kong Country from Retro. They took a good series and made it phenomenal. DKCR is one of the best platformers I've ever played, bursting with great ideas and ever-increasing challenges.

My uneducated assumption is that Nintendo needed more games, and Donkey Kong was just easier to make quickly.

I hope they get around to Metroid sometime soon.

Nintendo could have signed this out to any number of other developers. This is not what Retro should be doing at all.

And I really really liked DKCR and will buy this sequel.

Umm, but would you have liked it as much had Retro not made it? it seems silly to think that you could have gotten as good of a game from a number of other devs. If that logic holds, then couldn't any of those other devs make any of the other games you were hoping for from Retro?

Yes it's 2D, yes it's a platformer...but it still takes a ton of talent to make what they did.

I wonder if Retro's indeed working on the technical side of Mario Kart? That would explain why Mario Kart (together with X) might be the best looking game on the system, even though Mario Kart Wii was kinda ugly even for a Wii game.

Then again, if Nintendo had more than 1 first-party studio int he west it shouldn't have been a problem.

My biggest gripe with Nintendo. They want to sell their consoles all over the world, but they are way to fixated on Japan. It's annoying.

I'm glad that Nintendo realizes that they have a deficiency of Western titles and are bolstering their line up with Retro's talents. Can't get anymore Western than Donkey Kong. Wii U's will fly off the shelves.

What I find most disappointing about all of this, is that Nintendo hasn't realized that retro should be releasing a game every year and a half. It's been three fucking years and we are gonna get a sequel. Retro should be dropping 4 games in 7 years like Naught Dog. This is complete bullshit.

I am kind of sick of 2d platformers. For a while I missed them, but now Jesus, they are just a cheap way to cash in.

The WiiU is also way overloaded with platformers

You do know DKCR on 3DS and Wii sold like hotcakes right?

I'm guessing one of the reasons that they went with DKCR is because it sold incredibly well, especially compared to Prime 2 and 3. I am a bit disappointed, I feel like the Wii U has already done good on the platforming genre and that this game could have waited.

"Unfinished business" is PR for "This series makes more money"

Agreed. While devs like Retro and Tokyo EAD probably had some input, it's naĂŻve to think that financial concerns didn't determine the paths of their respective projects. And I say that as someone that would rather have a DKC game than a Metroid game.

I wasn't looking forward to another DKC (didn't like the previous because of the shake to roll) but I assume this one wont have that and then I heard about David Wise. Let's just say I'm back on board.

I would have loved to see a new Metroid Prime, but it was the RIGHT DECISION!!

Thank you based Retro! DCKR is the best 2D Platformer I've ever played. That game is perfection!

ALSO: DAVID WISE IS BACK!!!!

Reggie, ALL YOU HAD TO DO AT THE END OF THIS VIDEO IS ASK: "so just so fans can rest easy, Retro studios has more in store for the Wii U, right?" "Oh absolutely Reggie, and we look forward to showing the fans our work when it's ready"

Everyone should've known this all ready. Retro makes 2 games per gen. They have done that since the GameCube with Prime and Echos, Wii with Corruption and DKCR, and now the Wii U with DKCR2 and something else. I still have high expectations that the second game will be amazing. In the mean time we will have to settle with a fantastic platformer ohh the horror.

I feel like this is probably a good thing for Metroid fans.

Retro will be able to make a second 2.5D title, which will give them more experience in that field (not that they didn't do an excellent job with DKCR). Secondly, they'll have a Wii U game under their belts, which will give them extra familiarity with the hardware.

If they really did have the opportunity to choose between the two, I fully expect them to return to Metroid next. I also bet it'll be 2.5D like the DK games.

I don't want another Prime-style Metroid. I used to, but Retro needs to show Nintendo how to make a great 2.5D entry.

Footnote: There will never be another 2D Mario, Zelda or Metroid, as in pixels. 2.5D is the sad future.

I wanted a Metroid game but undserstand that DK game will move more money to Nintendo and they urgently need it , just hope next E3 we can se Metroid from RETRO..

Its only been a day and I'm already at the acceptance stage. It will end up being a damn good game. The David Wise announcement actually made me hyped. Still I want to see Retro work on a new IP.

Well, except for the first one, Jungle Beat and spin-offs every other DK has been developed by a western studio. That's 5 DKs out of 7 made by a western dev.

Makes me kinda angry. Their Donkey Kong was not that long ago and they just had a port of it for 3DS. I want a new Metroid from Retro to wash away the taste of the absolutely horrible Other M.

But Donkey Kong Country IS a western series...literally every Country game has been made by a western dev...

My main issue, other than the selfish I don't really care for DKCR, is the Wii U desperately needs some game diversity. Retro is one of the few Nintendo studios that can make a full featured competitive western style game. Instead they are being used to make a game half of Nintendo's studios could make which is in the only genre in which the Wii U is drowning in games. Given how poorly managed Retro is that means even if they do start working on one we won't see it until after the Wii U very may well have been Dreamcasted.

So did Brain Age and NSMB, now?

Past performance is not a predictor of future performance.

There's also Yarn Yoshi, and going back to the 2D platformer revival of 2009 or so there have been around 10 1st party console 2D platformers, add in handhelds and 3rd parties they've been coming out like it was 1989. The first batch, including DKCR, did really well but lately not so much but then see above. I was in love with them as well but lately it seems like Nintendo is excited to finally be in the HD era so they can make SNES games again.

The difference is we had very few other First Person adventure games on Gamecube/Wii when we were getting metroid primes, whereas the Wii U is swimming in platformers and not much else in comparision. New Super Mario Bros U, New Super Luigi, Sonic Lost Worlds (Technically 2d and 3d, but still), Super Mario 3D World (Expecting to be 2d and 3d like the 3DS game), Yarn Yoshi and now Donkey Kong. All being published by Nintendo. Then we have Rayman on top of that too, and arguably Super Smash bros, if the single player is anything like Brawls.

If nintendo wants to save the Wii U,I feel like more 2D platformers aren't the thing that is going to lure in people who were holding out, rather a diverse spread of games across a bunch of genres would help more, which just isn't happening.

It's like I just read that :P. I fully agree, the reason people didn't complain about MP2 was the GCN didn't have many good FPS', and very few sci-fi adventure type games. The Wii U does not need another flipping 2D platformer, or at the very least doesn't need another from one of the few Nintendo studios that can make games in the genres the Wii and now Wii U were sorely lacking in. Yeah, a more diverse game lineup would do more for sales than the few million DKCR2 will pull in. Most people just focus on how much an individual game will in isolation, and ignore other factors that many times augur for a lower selling game that brings more game diversity (but that's a common issue).
