Yup, I got the same email. I found it strange that the email didn't have any of my information in there already. I was tempted to not even open the email assuming everything was ok but if I didn't open it I wouldn't have noticed. Not sure if it's something I screwed up on my end months ago or if it's a common issue.
 
New episode is good, I'm only partway through. Surprisingly I have way more of these mentioned compilations than I expected to.

Glad for the shirts and pics people. I'm a DVD guy myself so I'm still waiting to hear back. It's still cool, though, any progress for anybody restores faith that there's progress on rewards coming for me too.

I'm certainly happy with the podcast product. Keep it up, guys!

I just wanted to say that Baldur's Gate episode was fantastic.
The guest was great and kept the discussion going with an incredible passion.
I loved it despite never having played the game.
 
Really enjoyed the Matsuno episode. I've only been listening to episodes here and there, but this one really clicked with me.

Going in, I didn't even really know who the man was. Coming out, I was surprised how many of his games I've played (Tactics Ogre PSP, FF12, Vagrant Story). Very informative and a great listen.
 
With all the talk about SRPG's and bonus 100 floor dungeons, I now have a hankering for a Level 5 podcast about Dark Cloud 1+2 and Jeanne D'arc.

Listening to Bob and Christian's personal issues with modern games was pretty painful. Wrapping yourself in so much 90's nostalgia that it causes you to pretend that every modern game is like Call of Duty or Gears/God of War is unhealthy.

You didn't listen to Matsuno and Ivalice episodes did you?

Matsuno's episode was a little bit disappointing but the Ivalice one was better covered IMO. It was great. I really loved it.
It's a shame that Ray didn't say much in these 2 episodes though. It's not his cup of tea I guess...
 
I'm surprised there was no talk about the Parappa commercials.

I haven't listened to anything in volume 3 yet. What are the pocket editions? Just some of the same content from the non-pocket episodes? Why do they exist?

No, they are just shorter shows on smaller topics that don't have enough content to fill a full show

Oh God this. I cringed so hard when I was listening in the car. I still look at 90s gaming with rose-tinted glasses too but damn they sound like they haven't played anything released after the PS2 era with the way modern gaming was written off like that. Absolutely brutal.
 
They are absolutely right about how pretentious games have gotten. But it's not just games, the same thing happened to genre movies/TV/fiction. Part of a cultural shift towards narcissism that's been going on for a very long time, beginning with highbrow art and gradually trickling down to absolutely everything.
 
I agree as well with Bob and Christian. I can't identify myself with most of the games that get produced these days.
I'm becoming too old I guess...
 
I gotta give props to Retronauts for reminding me of this game. Once I saw the topic in the description, I popped it in and found the music to be perfect for my toddler son. It was a great nostalgia trip, but I honestly lack the passion Bob and Christian possess for this series.

Yeah, I don't know if they got a bit carried away or if that's their actual understanding of modern gaming. Either way - people speaking their mind always make for a more interesting podcasts. Coulda used a counterpoint to make a fun debate of it.

Been listening again after not doing so for a while. Really enjoyed the Matsuno episode. Highly informative and really interesting how they traced the lineage and influence of several games and franchises on one another. I've never played any of Matsuno's games and I think that needs to change.
 
Did they seriously rant about "shoot-y man games" and not mention Gitaroo Man in the Parappa podcast? That was totally the successor to Parappa the Rapper!

Also, the whole "shoot-y man games are bad! consoles suck!" was pretty lame because of how dismissive it was. Video games, console games included, are too diverse to waste time complaining about games you don't like and not praising things that do what you like. Also, judging other people for their tastes was just as pretentious as AAA video games try to be, IMHO.
 
I'd be okay with Christian calling Tomb Raider "a piece of shit" on Insert Credit, or anywhere that could springboard into a discussion, but dropping it in a Retronauts about Parappa is just unnecessary snark. While I agree with most of their points on boxed retail games, they really went off the rails this time.
 
Liked the Parappa ep! I downloaded Lammy off the PSN store when it came out and I got really bummed out at my supposed lack of rhythm and never went back to it, glad to hear my suspicions of input lag being the case were true.
The idea of rotating hosts that decide the topics are great, but episodes like these where we only really have two of the four speaking much about it kind of seems like a waste of having Jeremy and Ray there. Liking the variety in episodes, hopefully we see more game topics that everyone on cast is more versed in.
 
Listening to the Matsuno podcast probably made me more nostalgic than anything else I've ever heard on Retronauts. The FFT soundtrack is still one of a few that can pretty much take me back to the exact place and time where I first played the game. Great job on that episode, guys.

This used to happen on Volume 1 for a lot of stuff too, but it would be nice if they could get two guests for any week where one host doesn't expect to talk much, like they did with the Wrestlenauts ep.
 
Ugh, wanna listen to both Matsuno episodes but I'm worried about Tactics Ogre and Crimson Shroud spoilers since I'm terrible and they're sitting in the backlog. If I skip their respective sections would I be okay? Or do they weave the talk through out? I've somehow maintained absolute blackout on both games this whole time so it would be nice if these shows somehow managed to cater to my stupid desire to experience everything 100% fresh.

There are no story spoilers about either game beyond extremely broad strokes, but the Tactics Ogre discussion does go into quite a bit of detail about the game's structure and systems. I wouldn't consider it to be anything to worry about (most of the stuff they talk about is in the game documentation or something you'll experience early on in the game) but if you're still concerned I would just skip that section. Crimson Shroud discussion is very brief and only at the very end of the ep.

Neither comes up in the Ivalice episode, obviously.

I've been enjoying the show a lot, but I just wanted to say for the future: could you guys please cool it with the constant comparisons between then and now with shitty "jokes" lamenting how nowadays everything's terrible, devoid of any creativity or artistic merit, and made exclusively for cynical reasons (except for the blessed indie community who art in heaven, deliver us from evil publishers, amen).

It really isn't funny, entertaining or even the least bit intelligent as commentary on today's state of the industry. You want go full on old men yell at cloud that's fine, do a show dedicated to the subject with actual back and forth discussions and intelligent arguments, but the snarky comments are getting incredibly annoying and completely break the flow and enthusiasm of recent episodes.

Yeah, I understand why people are put off upfront by the randomization, but once you look at it the right way (as, essentially, a quest-based SRPG crossed with a loot game) I think it really works.

The fact that Square-Enix is now such an incompetent organization that they couldn't even put together a Final Fantasy Tactics 3D is a great tragedy. ;_;

It does seem odd that three such intelligent guys have fallen into this trap. I'm speaking of Bob, Jeremy and Christian because Ray didn't really seem to get into it.

It reminds me of the line from American Graffiti, "Rock and roll's been going down hill ever since Buddy Holly died." There is nothing wrong with nostalgia. Hell, that's why we are listening this show in the first place. It is just surprising that they would allow themselves to get sucked into this generational narrative that the past was better. It's pretty obvious that in 30 years today's young people will be producing content about why Call of Duty was so great, and that's okay.
 
I put 20 hours into A2 and didn't like it either. The combat just didn't quite do it for me and my compulsion to do every side quest was the end of me.
 
Jeremy's usually the check on those sorts of comments, but I guess he's gotten tired of pulling Bob in on the unfunny rants.

The Ivalice episodes have been my two favorite episodes of the whole production since the Japan episode. Oh God, what does this mean?!

The last 4 episodes have really been a return to form after a string of sub par episodes (I think due to KS suggested topics the crew didn't actually care for. These last episodes feel just like the old school retronauts EPs. Anyone else feel the same way?
 
I put about 400 hours in FFT, 400 hours in FFTA, and 125 hours in FFTA2. The first two are more replayable, but FFTA2 Was good too. Certainly better than the dreck reventent wings were.

I wouldn't say they dropped the quality in the recent episodes. Wrestlenauts and Baldur's Gate ones are among the best IMO.

My issue with Matsuno's episode is that they barely scratched the surface and they gave me the impression that they were just reading wiki articles & random facts about it, with little personal anecdotes/opinions.
They fixed it in Ivalice episode but man, I wish the pre FFT games got the same treatment.
And I must protest: the original Tactics Ogre is better than the PSP remake which IMO screwed up many things (leveling system, crafting, the new job system, permadeath removal) and became too easy.
