Retronauts Podcast Thread

I know it's probably too late to make any changes to your Patreon campaign, but I have one request

Please make the pledge monthly, instead of per episode

It's significantly harder to budget a per-episode Patreon into my monthly spend!

Yeah. I've already done the advance scouting for our Patreon and discovered the hard way that per-item is a terrible way to go. It'll be a monthly campaign.

Just saw that you changed your Patreon from per article to monthly- I will likely be tossing some money your way now :)

Getting closer to season 2

Interesting that they are offering physical rewards but no mention of territories which seems odd, shipping internationally can get pricey.

Planning on going in at $2. That's about what I paid for the Kickstarter, and it's close to my comfort level. I'm tempted to up it to $5, if the show gets close to the level for the mini-episodes.

I really don't want to be "that guy" but I am hesitant to back again without seeing the reward for the first backing...and now I worry the DVD is an albatross around their neck now, or an afterthought at least. That reward being a burden wasn't what anyone wanted, and my original backing wasn't about the reward, but I can't pitch in again on the back of an unkept promise. I hope you guys understand.

On the plus side, if you want a set of ears to behold the fine work you do, I shall continue to tune in. Thanks.

I'm really glad the podcast is continuing.

I know the hosts are all resolutely American, but fortnightly sounds cooler than biweekly. And biweekly can mean either "twice a week" or " once every two weeks", so fortnightly is more precise.

The $4500 per month stretch goal of "Retronauts Does Japan" sounds amazing. I really hope we the listeners can get them to that.

Does anyone know if the shirts in the $24+ tier will be available separately to purchase? I'm backing either way but curious.

Bimonthly/fortnightly/biweekly are all synonymous, so we should all just agree to stop using language entirely until it cleans up its act.

I wish there was still a way for people to be able to "back" specific topics again. I know they're difficult to honor but the best episodes of Retronauts Vol III were the backer episodes in my opinion (wrestling games, golden age of Japanese games, Harvest Moon, girl games).

I kinda wish this was a thing too, I was soo excited to get to hear them do an episode for me on Illusion of Gaia (and the other games in the series). Actually gave them a few to choose from just to make sure they had something they could talk alot about.

Some of these backer-topic episodes were the worst ones, I thought--I can't think of specific examples off the top of my head, but there were episodes where the hosts clearly hadn't spent any real amount of time with the games they were talking about and were kinda just stumbling their way through the episode by regurgitating stuff they'd read on Wikipedia or whatever, and whenever I'd hear episodes like that I'd feel sorry for the people whose money they'd taken.

Yeah, I prefer the hosts talk about the topics they like and know the best. There are a few exceptions like the Wrestling episode which was exceptionally good (thanks to the guests) but others such as the Matsuno Episode weren't that good TBH.
One of my favorite episodes ever is Bionic Commando. Jeremy loves that game so much and you can feel the passion through that episode. You can't do that when you barely know the game(s) you're going to talk about.

All that is left is for Shane and Sharkey to come on and talk Final Fantasy VIII, and then I can return to my home planet.

We already had a FF8 discussion on original Retronauts. There needs to be a episode or mini episode talking about the greatest game in the series. IX.

What episode was that?! I remember the Final Fantasy VII with Shane, Sharky, Ray, and Jeremy, but I don't remember an VIII episode....

Would need to rescue Sharkey from the circus before they could do that
I remember they said he was a bartender or something, which seems appropriate. lol

But they seem to really dislike talking about the PC and old PC stuff, perhaps because it's just a big hole for them, so... I guess that's how it goes.

(You know, you'd think Retronauts could get a GOG sponsorship or something... it seems like a perfect combination of a company selling old games and a media outlet that specializes on old games. Maybe that would get them to talk more about old LucasArts and stuff like that. lol)

Jeremy has talked about how he has been using Macs his entire life and never played most PC games, which is why they would have CGW/GFW guys on for PC related topics on the 1UP version of the show. The current crew probably doesn't have enough expertise on PC stuff to do much more than read a Wikipedia article, but now that they seem to be scheduling shows well in advance (and that Ray isn't a regular anymore), i'm guessing they are going to be bringing more guests on who can hopefully fill holes like this.

For the record, I've been PC gaming since around 1996, and that's my platform of choice at the moment. I'm trying to make an effort to do a few more PC-related topics this year.

I'd also like to add that doing research involves more than "reading a Wikipedia article."

I'm glad I wasn't the only one immediately thinking "FF13" when the requirements were listed. It would have bugged the crap out of me if no one mentioned it.

How are we supposed to treat this thread not that there's tiered access? Are non-backers okay with Patreon supporters talking about future episodes a week before they can listen?

The first Retronauts Micro went up today for any backers who might have missed it, by the way.

Shenmue received mostly excellent critical review. Shenmue sold over a million copies. Yakuza is not the spiritual successor to Shenmue.

Silicon Knights was in St Catherines which is near Niagara Falls, not Vancouver. Way, way off.

Edit: aww, I liked Eat Lead.

That topic is honestly one you could do two or three times without running out of examples. There's been a bunch of them in recent years!

I loved the episode though, one of my favorite ones so far.
