Retronauts Podcast Thread

I really think you've hit on something with a focused music episode format for the micros. RE save game room tunes was a great choice. I think they're really etched into my memory, as I hung out in those rooms so much working up my nerve to head out for another run.

Was the last tune the RE Gaiden save game room tune?

I'd suggest Pause Menu music for a future one, Battletoads comes to mind along with Banjo Kazooie.

EDIT: Come to think of it, I think it was you guys that installed the Battletoads pause music in my head.

Wondering if they'll ever do a Mortal Kombat episode.

I know it's not Jeremy's cup of tea, but it has so much history, it merits it's own episode.

I like the idea, but I was only into the first three games and I know a LOT happened between then and now. So we'd DEFINITELY have to find a few Bay Area Kombat experts.

Also, the final song is the new Ghost House theme created for the Super Mario Bros. 3 variant of those levels in Super Mario Maker.

Except for the whole beginning part about speculating how the commercial failure of the 2002 REmake led to the creation of 2001's Devil May Cry, I really liked the Devil May Cry episode. It did a better job articulating why people hate DMC2 than most things, which just boil down to "the game is SHIT!", which is something I really appreciate.

Also, I keep forgetting how old Jose is. For some reason, I keep thinking he's like 26.

Oh yes, can't wait to listen to the DMC episode! ...and I can't believe DMC is already retro. Boy does time fly.

By the way, what happened to Ray Barnholt? Is he too busy for Retronauts these days? I loved his input... :(

I think if someone hasn't played any DMC games they should start with 3 SE. DMC1 is really antiquated in a lot of ways. 3 SE using Gold Orb mode is a better, easier and more approachable game than the original.

Only thing about this episode that disappointed me was that no one mentioned the way they retconned the name of the series to actually make sense at the end of 3. I thought that was pretty clever.

Friggin' great episode, this. Makes me want to dig out some of the old DMC games and play through 'em again. Thanks, guys!

He still does No More Whoppers, if you want to hear him on a podcast.

I beat the original version. Took me months lol. I remember when it just clicked.

Really fun game. Definitely one the best of that generation. Not my favorite action game that gen, but really fun.

Any chance you guys can do an episode on the Super Famicom Satellaview games?

That's like a treasure trove of Nintendo polished riches that'll never be rereleased.

You know you're listening to a high quality podcast when you have absolutely zero nostalgia for a series and you're bummed it didn't last twice as long. The Devil May Cry episode was really interesting; I especially loved the contributions from the Capcom community manager and the history of Mikami and Kamiya's involvement over the years.

Since Sega exited the console market, I've become a Nintendo-first gamer, but it was really nice to hear about a series that got its start on PS2. I hope that's a sign of things to come; there's only so much more you can wring out of some of the NES/SNES staples at this point.

The book's not quite done, but I am currently in the process of wrapping it up. I sent digital proofs to Bob and Ray over the weekend for approval, and as soon as I hear from Bob I'll just need to add the cover, two images, and the thank-you list of backers before it's ready for a print proof.

I'm using some personal time from work after the holiday review rush to wrap up everything else (DVDs, some odds and ends) with the goal of having books and DVDs manufactured and ready for our friends at Fangamer to distribute by the end of the year. Fangamer tends to be a little swamped so it may be February before that stuff goes out, but backers will receive digital editions of both the book and the DVD as soon as they're ready.

I really learned a lot in this last episode. Williams is one of those companies that I never really looked into, even though I love myself some Defender and Joust. Those later games you all mentioned, especially, were completely unknown to me. And who knew Jaz was some sort of Sweet Road, arcade wizard? Good stuff!
I liked the episode; lots of great music.

And the added bonus of another use of "donators" instead of donors for Ray and Alex to complain about on No More Whoppers.
This made me laugh more than it probably should have. One of the secret pleasures of NMW is hearing the occasional thinly veiled snipe. I caught one in the most recent episode. Catty!

my favorite thinly veiled snipe was when ray said "bob mackey sure doesn't listen to this show!"

also, bob, since you don't listen to the show, ray is open to another invite back, so you should invite him back. the fans demand more taito trivia or something.

Ray just recorded three episodes with me and some Laser Time folks on Sunday!

I really liked the NES launch memories! Great episode, especially Steven Lin's stuff. Super interesting.

Couple of quick and petty nitpicks: Mackey mentions Jaws, which I love, and Parish says it was made by Atlus. I was pretty sure it was an early Westone joint, but if I'm wrong I'd love to know more about it. Source? It's really hard tracking down who worked on what in the early days, and it doesn't help that credited studios like Atlus and especially Red subcontracted all the time.

Another quick one for the Clock Tower mini: The plot of the Playstation sequel is that there were two survivors of the first game, not just one. Half the mystery is the identity of the 2nd amnesiac survivor.

Great stuff lately, though! The Dragon Quest one especially was a nice overview of the series that got me back on track playing through the portable entries in anticipation of VII and VIII.

Atlus subcontracted Westone for Jaws, yeah. It was made in two months by three dudes, but you can hardly tell...

Most if not all of the other LJN/Atlus games were actually made by Atlus, AFAIK.

Oh boy! I'm excited.

So glad I discovered Retronauts, NMW, Laser Time, USgamer and all the rest this summer. Keep up the great work guys!

I backed for the "decide the topic of a video segment" tier and I don't think they're ever going to do those, but that's OK since I was primarily looking to support the show anyway, and I've certainly been rewarded for that.

We're doing everything! Mop-up duty on odd stuff happens after the DVD wraps. I think we owe someone cookies, too.

Speaking of the DVD, next weekend is a recording marathon weekend, and one episode will be recorded exclusively for the DVD.

While not Williams, Sony also dipped back into early arcade roots for another launch title for PS2. Fantavision is the most expensive Missile Command knock off ever made!

Is anyone else having issues accessing the latest episode page on Patreon? If I am logged in the page won't load. Weirdly the QBert video loads and was uploaded the same time. Tried clearing my cookies but just will not load.

I took forever for the Mario 64 page to load so I could download the MP3.

My first time seeing Super Mario 64 was at my local Microplay after they imported a Japanese N64. I played it in the store for about 15 minutes and put my name on the waiting list to rent it. I had to wait another 3 weeks or something insane but it was totally worth it. I don't think I beat it, I just fooled around with the save file that was already on there. I think it had over 50 stars so everything was unlocked. I just loved exploring, I didn't care that I wasn't progressing.

When the N64 came out in North America, I rented it again and beat it proper, then when I managed to save up $300 I bought a N64 of my own. After tax and the RF adapter thing I only had $50 left to buy a game and N64 games were insanely expensive in Canada the only game I could afford was that Japanese Mario 64 cart only with the tabs cut off from my Microplay(It was $39.99). It took me almost a year to get all 120 stars. I had no internet access and not even the slightest hint for any of them.

Oh and seeing how many stars/which stars you could get before the kiosk reset itself every 5 minutes was the shit!

I remember the first time playing Mario 64 quite vividly.

My mom took me over to her friend's house and they had a son my age. He always had the newest shit.

I remember him letting me play the first area outside the castle. Trying to learn how to maneuver within the 3d world was insane to me. We tried to walk on the edges on the bridge like a tightrope playing with the new analog controls.

I got the game that following christmas and still have my copy to this day.

Didn't know Bob liked Banjo-Kazooie. Glad he cleared up some misconceptions people have about B-K in comparison to some of the later Rare platformers released on the N64.

I just had some fraud on my credit card and had to cancel it and I'm dreading having to go through and reinput it into everywhere I need to and I noticed Retronauts donations have dropped 10%, it's down under $2700 when it was over $3000 at one point wasn't it?

That got me thinking, I don't know if you know this or want to publicly discuss this, but is there data on how many people are lost to "their credit card expired and they never bothered to put it back in"? I'm curious about what impact that would have on the long term viability of Patreon as a funding model.

Patreon did A Bad Thing and the tally now shows how much we're ACTUALLY earning, not how much the campaign is—in other words, it's accounting for what Patreon's taking out. I guess that's helpful, but I know people with Patreon tiers that are now essentially unfunded thanks to this change.

So how was the latest metroid episode? I am not able to download it.
From itunes? I've downloaded it twice from their website and it has worked fine.

To sum it up: Jeremy drops the knowledge and some childhood memories, Bob plays bass, and Jose, as the picture of obsequiousness, just keeps checking to make sure everyone's on the same page.
