Retronauts Podcast Thread

It was a great episode, as always when Jeremy talks about Metroid. However, I am slightly disappointed in their non-treatment of Other M, while the story in it sucked, that game could have used some serious discussion of its gameplay.

Jose, as the picture of obsequiousness

Come on.

It was a great episode, as always when Jeremy talks about Metroid. However, I am slightly disappointed in their non-treatment of Other M, while the story in it sucked, that game could have used some serious discussion of its gameplay.

We'll save that for our eventual episode on 3D Metroid games. We ignored anything involving polygons, or else this episode would have been uselessly glancing.

It was sort of a joke. I only know him through podcast appearances, but that's how he usually comes across to me. I'm sure he's lovely.

I enjoyed listening to the Parasite Eve pocket episode. I'm not sure i would ever want to go back to it, but I have fond memories of playing it when I was a little whippersnapper. That soundtrack is still great, though. Synth-y electronica opera just works for me.

Bringing in some love, I really enjoyed the micro episode on Parasite Eve. Parasite Eve is one of my favorite RPGs because it is set in the modern world with modern rules (even if that modernity is 1997 today). I also liked that hybrid nature of the action and the turn based gameplay, something that I wish was in more RPGs today. I'm glad Jeremy brought up a lot of the FFVII similarities as well. However, a lot of the creature stuff, and the dated CG, has always felt like a throwback to Carpenter's version of The Thing, for me. When I think of Parasite Eve, it is always near the top of my favorite list of PS1 games... not "best", but favorites. If I had a complaint, it would be that this episode, like a few before it, aren't really suited for a "micro" 15 minute episode, but aren't really a full episode either; I wish there was a, I dunno, "mini" version which was 30-45 minutes in length that covered more or sequels.

I think I might have played Parasite Eve II, but I can't remember a thing about it, and I never got much into The 3rd Birthday, but I vow here and now to finally complete it by this Spring.

So how was the latest metroid episode? I am not able to download it.

I liked it. I thought it was a good podcast on the 2D Metroid games.

Now, I'm legitimately excited for Federation Force, but understand the frustration backlash it got. I'm dying to know how this podcast would have went had it been recorded post-E3.

Not much differently except to express weariness at people who are apoplectic with rage about Federation Force, I suspect. I want a proper Metroid follow-up, too, but that doesn't mean I'm going to throw a tantrum that Nintendo decided to try something different with the series.

Just saw in this thread that there was a Metroid episode. Totally agree with Zero Mission as the high point of the series, I thought I was the only one. I love the original game, played it a ton back in the day, and still think it's worthwhile as it has the darkest, weirdest atmosphere in the series. Zero Mission takes that classic and merges everything they learned to do right in Super, and what they learned not to do from Fusion. And I agree with Jose, Fusion was good, I quite enjoyed it back in the day and wasn't even that torn up over the handholding.

I never liked what Metroid 2 did with the other Metroid designs, they seemed too...un-Metroid like. Like they were lizards or something, they didn't feel as weird, creepy and alien as the original design did.

Other M...had some dumb story elements, but I've played enough dumb video game stories that I'd be willing to look the other way. What really killed that game for me was the awful pointer missile controls. I get why they wanted to do it, and on paper it probably seemed like genius to somebody, and/or fulfilled a corporate directive to implement motion control. But it was just too awkward, and wound up driving me away from the game after a couple of hours.

I've somehow never finished any of the Prime games despite owning all 3 of them for their original platforms. Even though I feel like I really like what the series does, something about them makes me get bored and drift away after a while. But I bought Prime Trilogy when it hit the Wii U last year, I think this episode has inspired me to get back into it now.

As for the series' future, Retro has been really silent for a suspiciously long time, and I have a strong feeling that a Retro Metroid is Nintendo's secret plan to get hardcore gamers on board for NX as early adopters. I'm expecting there to be footage at E3.
Of course, I've been expecting footage from the last 4 E3s as well and bought a Wii U in part for HD Metroid, so take that with a grain of salt.

When can we start considering the 360 retro? It's now over 10 years old!

All future episodes of Retronauts will actually be a "10 years later" chronological retelling of the Xbox 360's life. When we hit 2026, we'll shift to "10 years later" recaps of those episodes.

Thanks for the unnecessary, douchey response. I'll be sure to post a sarcastic "congrats" in here when I finally get my kickstarter backer rewards three years after paying for them.

Uhh I was just trying to see if your comment was an equally douchey "correction" to something I said on the show about most console people playing HL2 via The Orange Box.

Also, you paid to have a year of podcasts produced, which happened. The DVD is an extra we're also obligated to produce. Though I'm not sure why you still care since you don't seem to like me very much!

Kirby 64 was my first Kirby game(unless Dream Course counts). It was so much fun figuring out which power combinations you needed to get the secret stuff. I loved the fridge that would attack enemies with food.

The random people robbing you in Vegas Stakes were so annoying. I love how you put your money equally in both pockets so if anyone robs you, you only lose 1/2 your money:lol

Or more like none because you would always load your last save if that happened. There was no skill to it, it was all random.

Just catching up on the show. Great show on Metroid! I will probably bump my contribution after hearing the news about needing some more funds. Admittedly I only give a buck right now....

Have you guys explored the possibility of having the podcast on spotify?
That would probably get you a few extra $$$, also exposure of being part of the pioneers.

I'm a few episodes behind at this point, but I just wanted to say that I love the playing card theme that's going on with the art accompanying each episode. Keeps everything consistent while still being creative and unique to each episode.

PSP Episode us up on Pateron.

How could you guys forget about the Tapwave Zodiac when talking about handhelds out at that time? I mean come on, it had such amazing games as StarPong, Xploids, Z Pack: Adventure, and a Spy Hunter game based on the movie staring The Rock that never happened!

Just kidding, Ray remembered the GP32 which is even more obscure. The thing used SmartMedia cards:lol

Is that even possible? I sincerely have no idea how that would work. Are there other podcasts on the service?

(Realistically, though, given the rates streaming services pay, we'd probably net something like 20 cents per month.)

There's a 1UP Show YouTube video of me singing about Mario to the tune of "Maria" from West Side Story in which I'm playing a GP32X... I think I used it for about a month to play through Cave Story and some pretty lame NES emulators before dropping the thing like a hot potato.

I've been listening through old Retronauts over the past few months, and I hope we get some more Micros or Pockets in the future exploring old video game cartoons or game shows.

After the discussions about Captain N and the Sonic cartoon, I'd love to subject Bob to the Mega Man cartoon and the Akria Toriyama Dragon Warrior cartoon. Both of those would be illuminating and could potentially be comedy gold.

I'd also love a Sega CD episode at some point, while I'm dreaming.

Still, you guys are doing great work. I already upped my Patreon donation to $2. The week just wouldn't be the same without my dose of Retronauts. Thanks for all of your hard work on the show. Bring Ray and Chris Kohler back when you get a chance.

That's about what I did with it too. I tried the preinstalled software of the used one I bought once or twice then put it down. That's about what I've done with all my emu consoles right up to the GCW Zero.

All kidding aside about the Zodiac, it did have some cool games like Doom II and Duke Nukem Mobile. Apparently it had ports of the first two Tomb Raider games that were never released as well. Who knows if they would have been crap like the N-Gage game or somewhat competent.

It was also used as a Tricorder(gizmo thing that does everything) in Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis. There's one episode where a bunch of alternate reality SG-1's end up in the same reality and General Landry gives the alternate reality Dr Frasier a "cure for the Prior plague" and it's just a foam briefcase filled with Tapwave Zodiacs.

Didn't really miss any good PSP games except maybe the Hot Shots games. That series works really good on a portable.

Jeanne D'Arc is one of my favorite games of all time. Funny story about that game. I didn't pay attention during the tutorial that taught you how to use skill slots so I got like 50% of the way through the game without using any special abilities(except whatever ones the characters started with). I sold large amounts of the items to. At one point I got fed up with constantly getting hit with magic and not having any magic of my own and looked around in the menus and realized what an idiot I was. I think I spent like 2 hours just binding stuff. I ended up having to grind like crazy to earn back all the materials I had stupidly sold. Took me forever to give everyone HP Recovery 3 since I had sold all my Lunar Spirits not realizing how valuable they were.

Loved the Hal episode. You guys really did a great job with this second season, I've loved them all so far.

For what it's worth, it's such a nice touch ending an episode on a really nice tune like you always seem to do.

Just upped my support from $1 to $3 a month and also decided to support Jeremy's stuff at $2. Five bucks a month well spent. I've come to realize that these guys create the only video game-related content I regularly care about any more. Keep it up!

Wipeout Pure was the must have PSP launch game for me. It looked amazing, played great and reviewed very well. But of course it's not even mentioned on Yankonauts.

At 21:17 they lament the lack of quality games at the PSP's launch. The only titles mentioned are DarkStalkers Chronicles, Metal Gear Acid and Lumines.

Since Ridge Racer and Wipeout Pure are still in the top 10 rated PSP games 11 years later it's very odd not to mention them. Almost as if facts that don't fit the PSP-had-a-weak-launch narrative were being ignored.

Oh man I remember that ghost and goblins thread

Great episode
I was a lurker back then. Duckroll wasn't a mod back then as well, but looking at it now it seems like it a mod made the thread.

GAF was pretty ruthless back then too. Jeremy is smart for not reading it lol.

They definitely mention Wipeout (by the guest whose name I forget) and Ridge Racer (by Ray) as quality launch titles, but, yes, they somehow forget about the two games when discussing the PSP launch as a whole. The PSP had a great launch.

Is this it?

I didn't realize that giving Ghost and Goblins a low review score worthy of being tarred and feathered:lol

Here's another one. Christ, they couldn't let it go, could they? Note how many of the people vigorously complaining are no longer with us.

Honestly, while I stumbled into the UGnG situation from a position of total innocence — I had no agenda there besides always saying "yes" when people asked me to review games — I fanned the flames afterwards enough to deserve some of the vitriol. It was definitely a professional growth moment, and I became a lot more circumspect and considerate (not to mention MUCH less smug/cocky) in everything I wrote afterwards.

It's an interesting coincidence that Frank posted those old ZD review guidelines on Twitter the day before this episode went out, because the UGnG review kerfuffle definitely had an impact on the company's review policies.

Ridge Racer and WipEout Pure were superb launch games, both showed just what could be achieved on the hardware, they both had a level of polish above and beyond 90% of launch titles on any platform (Mario games aside). Add in Lumines and Virua Tennis and the PSP dumps all over the DS launch line up from a great height.

PSP took me away from console gaming in a big way, I remember being blown away by Pro Evolution Soccer and Football Manager appearing on the system, then all the JRPGs, great arcade racing games, awesome 3D platformers, puzzle games and of course portable OutRun 2006, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Power Stone, Tekken and Soul Calibur!

Oh PSP, how I loved thee <3

I actually imported Ridge Racer 2 which was a remix/sequel that was never released in the US. But since I skipped Ridge Racer at launch in favor of Wipeout Pure, it was a great title to get later on.

this uematsu/mitsuda episode is fucking great. I was worried at first because they were reaaaally taking their time getting through the FF games and retronauts tends to not be that long, so i thought they were gonna run out of time and rush through the end. nope! over 2 hours

After listening to the first half or so of the excellent Uematsu episode and all the discussion on this topic, I have to share my not so secret shame: I did actually play the Final Fantasy theme in my wedding ceremony, lol. It was the FFXII arrangement, and it was the recessional rather than at the beginning. There's a moment where everyone under 30 in the audience suddenly realized what it was while all the olds were just hearing some random classical music, it was pretty good. Sorry Kohler!

Despite neither of them being gigantic JRPG nerds I'm pretty sure the Celtic FF IV album ended up having one or two songs in a friends wedding about a decade ago.

Same here! retronauts, usgamer podcast and axe of the blood god make my bus commutes so much better.

I even considered getting into talking simpsons even though I don't know the simpsons as well as most people.

I bought the DS first, had an okay time with it for a year, then got tempted and traded it in for a PSP. Those games were a revelation, especially Ridge Racer and Lumines. They were exactly what I wanted/needed at that point in my life. I like the Vita a lot but it's a shame it couldn't capture the same magic, given how much better crafted the hardware is.

I'm got a fairly minor question, but it's bothering me.

I'm a Patreon backer and keep all the episodes numbered in Itunes. Recently, though, my numbering is one too low. So the newest Ninja Five-O episode shows at #127, but I only have 126 episodes.

I've looked and I have everything.

Does anyone else keep their Retronauts organized like me and has seen a similar issue?

Nothing like being nerd shamed by guys who do a podcast about old videogames.

Good music is good music; it doesn't matter where it comes from.
