Faceball 2000 is in the middle, so [fart sounds]

I actually did consider a backward approach to the NES, but then I saw the prices on the system's end-of-life releases and said naaaaaaah.

You just gave me an idea.

CronCheapass, A chronological review of every video game that can be found on eBay for under $5 shipped.

From Combat for the Atari 2600 to Madden whatever they are up to now!

Kind of like what Frank did when he bought every PS2 game that wasn't sports gamestop had for under $5 that one time.

bob closing out the shop theme ep with the GOAT shop theme from revelations: persona gets a big thumb up

the composer of that one was misaki okibe, with vocals from one of the other composers, hidehito aoki (who sadly died in a car accident a few years later). the only reason i somehow know this is because of the show notes at vgmdb

anyways, shouts to the amazing english lyrics, never forget the rocal drag store music

They are doing a 10th anniversary panel at Portland Retrogaming Expo. One month after I've already spent a bucket of money on PAX is tough. Want to try to get out there though. But man these flights suck. Toronto to Portland with a stopover in Phoenix? Screw that.

You guys should probably adjust your live event commitments down like you did the stickers. By the time that show happens you'll have done 3, but promised 5.

Either that or do two more events between now and Nov.

That's one of the things I actually need to change on the Patreon page. As it stands, we can really only afford to do two panels a year, since producing the show is expensive and taxes take a huge, HUGE bite out of our earnings. We also essentially sacrifice two months' worth of Patreon donations to make physical rewards, so there's that to account for as well. We still don't actually profit from the show--outside of buying ourselves games and equipment we use to make it--so people have been pretty understanding.

...Though I imagine this will all be covered on another video podcast Denis Dyack invites me to.

Do people really care about the stickers?

They seem to be the same ones every time and I just kind of chuck them someplace after I get them.

But I guess you need something on that tier. Backer exclusive monthly episode?

Or make $5 the early access tier. That's what everyone else has it at.

My offer still stands. I'll upload a disc image and a PDF of the cover and you can knock out 296 DVDs in a weekend or two. Might be a nice reminder of simpler days.

The joke is I would never waste my time talking to him.

Got it. Never to him, just about him. Like most everyone else here. Very clear. Congrats?

I'm going to do more Game Boy stuff, so we'll get to Faceball 2000 in a couple of decades.

Hey, I just wanted to say that I appreciate the work you do on Game Boy World. It seems like such a tedious, thankless job. But I'm glad someone is bothering to do it, and the work you put in is all worth watching. It makes an excellent companion to the work done by Mr. Sparkle in his various projects. The whole Game Boy World is essential watching for anyone interested in a large part of video game history. I look forward to more.

Translation: He's saying that because we're lazy and dishonest, he'll create the overdue Kickstarter DVD for us by giving us a disc image of old Bonus Stage episodes, as well as the art file for classy-as-hell cover he threw together for the DVD he made for himself. Because obviously we've been lying about how we've been working hard on it and are nearly finished.

Speaking of the DVD, will it be for sale to non-Kickstarter backers? I didn't back the Kickstarter, but I've been a patreon since the start, and would really like to see the new content

Really sort of an unfair paraphrasing, I've never called you lazy or dishonest and I don't think that--I've been a fan and I've been fair for as long as I've listened. I've been friendly and cordial and reasonable in all outlets, even tried to calm things down after some other guy got peeved in here about the DVD.

I'm really glad the DVD is making progress, because I've already got this one. And Jeremy you can mock it if you want but this one was a labor of love from a fan who appreciated your work, but couldn't afford a PC fast enough to watch the native QT. So i burned DVDs of the shows, just so I could watch them smoothly. That's how those got made, and the custom nature of the labels was just for fun.

SO let's just cut to the quick of it: if you want to hate me because I forgive Denis, go ahead. That's how I got here, forgiving the disallowed. I don't support misogynistic campaigns, but I also don't support turning a developer who has brought me one of my favorite games into a sensationalistic one-liner for the sake of having something controversial to discuss. I never did, all the years it's been done.

You said something vaguely negative about a hasbeen, overrated, sue-happy, GamerGate supporting developer that some people still like for some reason.

You show up in every discussion of him too. Like its personal or something.

I chose to stick up for the guy, whereas you seem to run regular searches or a Google alert for his name to show up in every thread mentioning his name to beat the dead horse of tearing him down.

At least I can say I do so because he has become a friend of mine. What's your good reason?

Imbarkus, your idea of being a "fan" is to tattle to a man who is known to be aggressive, combative, and hyperbolic because someone made some offhanded (and frankly mild) critical remarks about him in passing. That's definitely not how I or anyone I know express our appreciation of people whose work we claim to enjoy.

I've actually enjoyed some of Dyack's games in the past. But all of his transgressions, combined with the fact that he's explicitly trying to appeal to the Worst People Ever (who honestly don't seem to want anything to do with him, either), give me absolutely zero incentive or obligation to respect him OR give him any of my free time.

This whole comcept (sic) of tattling escapes me when you're referring to a public figure on what is essentially a public radio show. But Jeremy (my name is Dana BTW) I can at least amend my statement to say that that's my idea of being a friend, rather than a fan.

When I was a fan, I just quietly disagreed, and focused on the games. And when you think about Denis, he really did the same, from 2008 on until recently. Sure he had the tirade in 2008, the 1up Yours appearance, the blowup here, the start of the Epic suit. Mistakes that he would later admit, but that would still define the entirety of his career in the public discourse, very much at the hands of some people from 1up and some people here. Ex Gamespot people didn't give a crap, ex IGN didn't spit when his name was mentioned.

But then what aggressive, combative, hyperbolic person are you referring to having to deal with during this period? The one no one heard from but everyone still discussed? The one who barely made a peep when X-Men Destiny launched? The friendlier, apologetic one who tried to crowdfund a game and form a new studio with nearly a dozen of his former coworkers, and not be the boss? The one who waited eight months to respond to the Kotaku article, and then only did so for the good of the team?

That's when I shifted. That's when we on that project learned how useful it was to keep to yourself, to keep quiet, to keep ignorant of what people are saying. When we tried to work together to both fund and develop the follow-up to aforementioned one-of-my-favorite-games-of-all-time, and GAF leaked the project the weekend before launch, and Polygon and Patrick and Mark and Greg and everyone else got their klicks (sic) off a bunch of unkind, untrue speculation. Finally, a vulnerable fundraiser, such pride in the discouragement thereof... except, you know, history turns unkind, untrue speculation into mean lies. Of course six months later the 8-4 bump will still help ensure that Mighty No. 9 gets made... and then translated by 8-4, Ltd. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't know what to tell you Jeremy, disagreements are often about viewpoints and perspectives. If you had considered yourself a part of that project at the time, you might see things my way a bit more. All I've done is advocate for someone. The literal Devil, apparently.

Man I wouldn't wish a Twitter pileup on my worst enemy and I'm sorry that happened. You both came in aggressive and combative ("Delete Your Career") and what a mess. I don't hate people for disagreeing with me on any topic, and I bet we agree on 90% of life. You make a Simpsons podcast, fer chrissake!

But there is a bias here, a shared oral history among select and key people, combined with the advent of a new digital and indexible and unforgettable form of history, whatever. Was it meant to prevent him from ever getting a second chance? It's kind of hard, in light of that idea, to blame him for wanting to work with a different sort of games press entirely--given that a lot publishers have come to the same conclusion. In his case, I'm not sure he felt he had any other choice. I don't really know. Obviously GG is a disaster and a mistake for all involved, but that doesn't mean the press or the conventional opinion is right about everything or everyone.

what is wrong with you

Well, that's not the outcome I was angling for here, but good grief.

I would be OK with a drink-up in SF. Uh, let's say... tonight. Yeah.

I'm gonna say the airship-in-fantasy concept in Final Fantasy 1 comes directly from Laputa: Castle in the Sly.

In fact I'd say much of classic jRPG DNA comes directly from that movie. Girl who has the lineage of an ancient technological civilization, hidden on a floating continent, is pursued by an empire. :P

On the Pac Man ep they mentioned a backer exclusive Atari Lynx podcast with Steve Lin and Rignall. Any idea if this is still available or was it for kickstarter backers only?

It's going to be on the KS DVD (which is complete except for one segment), and no, we won't be offering it to non-backers. It wouldn't seem fair, especially after such a long wait.

This show has become the highlight of my week.

Can't wait to listen to the Final Fantasy I episode tonight! :D

I managed to get a copy of Earthbound shortly after listening to the episode on it, and chatting about the game with my boss. Can't wait to finally get into that, as well.

Yes, i started playing Earthbound because of this podcast. I tried playing it a few years ago but didn't have the time

It's been very heartwarming to hear so many people tell me they're trying EarthBound for the first time thanks to our podcast. (Especially in light of a few people complaining about us choosing that topic.)

For what it's worth, I threw my cartridge of Earthbound in the trash after that episode....

:P

I'm playing through Chrono Cross again, and while I was disappointed by it the first time I played it, I'm now starting to think on this play-through (I just got past "the twist") that it is unfairly hated. I know there was a Radical Dreamers episode once upon a time, but I'd love something in-depth about CC since people rarely discuss it except to hate on it or segue into walking about the popular and headline grabber Chrono Trigger.

Just finished the Final Fantasy episode and really enjoyed it! Have you guys considered doing a Phantasy Star episode? I know that series doesn't have the same legacy or popularity of FF or DQ but it was still an important RPG of its day. I played through it last year and I think it's aged much better than the first games in either of those other series.

I love when Chris kohler shows up. The FF episode was amazing.

Also bought earthbound on the 3ds VC. I own the actual cart but I hope I can get into it with the handheld version. I've only ever gotten a few hours in

Weird suggestion. Have you guys ever considered combining the microepisodes? I like them, but would prefer having 3 or so of em in one hour long podcast since I mostly listen to podcast while doing other stuff (like driving) and would prefer not to have to fiddle with my phone. Just a suggestion! Keep up the good work guys :)

I, too, fall into that camp. I've heard much adulation about EarthBound over the years, but this podcast was the best such example and really got me interested.

Speaking as a backer, I hope you guys sell that DVD or find some other way to make that content available. Many people, not just us, have supported your show over the years and would love that content just as much.

Thanks for keeping that fire burning, though; I wouldn't have faulted you guys for just giving up on the DVD.

Some podcast apps let you set up playlists, or at the very least, give you the option for shows to automatically begin the next one when an episode finishes.

Downcast does this, at the very least. It's what I've used for all my podcast needs since iTunes began blowing goats circa 2012.

Finally listened to the Final Fantasy episode. Good stuff.

I don't know why, but the series is an evergreen podcast topic for me. I hope you guys can cover more parts of the series in the years to come. This episode and the Uematsu one made me want to hear you guys talk about the games more in depth.

We were supposed to have had a Final Fantasy IV episode in the bag a few months ago, but my guests backed out at the absolute last minute and I had to cancel that recording session trip.

Yeah, had a similar experience. After hearing the past few episodes I decided it was finally time to play through Earthbound and a few of the other RPGs I missed that are on my backlog shame list, including the original Final Fantasy. Thanks guys for giving me the kick in the pants I needed!

Well said. At the end of the episode, when the guys started talking about FFII, I really wanted the conversation to continue in that direction and into the other games.
