Retronauts Podcast Thread

MGC episode is up for backers. Looks like Bob or Jeremy had Metal Gear on the brain when they posted it because the post says "Live at MGS" :lol

Audio quality is a bit rough on the MGC show, but i'm probably spoiled with the recording/filming setups people have at PAXs. Really cool we get this so quickly.

The equipment was fine! Unfortunately, the presentation space was not conducive to recordings... it took place in a hotel bar full of hard surfaces, open windows and doors into the crowded halls and lobby full of people and games, and with customers coming in to be served for lunch on the other side of the room. I was actually shocked by how nice the recording sounds, to be honest — I was afraid it would be a lost cause.

I was right behind the laptop and watched the Audacity levels bouncing, so I expected the same.

The show was really awesome, all! Make sure that you listen.

Yep, I was worried that recording was going to be unsalvageable, but our own audio is pretty clear outside of some background noise. It's not ideal, but I definitely think it's entirely listenable. I once had the experience of angering people by posting a barely-audible live show just for the sake of posting it, so I'm really glad that's not the case this time.

What I'm hearing is we're not complaining enough, and you would like us to complain more:p

Insanely off topic but I just listened to the Underrated Scifi episode of Laser Time and you really should watch Stargate SG1.

It's got lots of Simpsons references in it and even has an entire episode starring Dan Castellaneta.

Call it supplemental viewing for when you get to Kiss Kiss, Bang Bangalore in about 6 1/2 years

Finding it really hard to cope with the audio quality of the Retronauts Live Master System episode. Must have had the recorder on a noisy bar or similar. Might have to give it a pass. :(

Bob when you were talking about an Adventure Island game themed around bugs or insects were you thinking of the Famicom game "Takahashi Meijin no Bug-tte Honey"?

The second half of the episode is a segment we recorded in our quiet hotel room after the panel.

We actually recorded the MGC episode in a perfectly controlled studio environment and I spliced in a bunch of ambient sound libraries to make it sound like we traveled to an event.

Waitwaitwaitwait, Westone is pronounced West-One? It's not a mixture of West and Stone? Has my whole life been a lie?

No, I just mispronounced it. The name comes from the fact that its two founders' names began with Nishi- and Ishi-... nishi-ishi would be west-stone in Japanese.

The name is derived from "west" and "stone", the English translations of the surnames of the two founders, but I have no idea how the developers themselves pronounce it.

When you start arguing about the proper pronunciations of Japanese transliterations of English words, no one wins.

The second half is much easier to listen to! Really great! The first half has the audio for the voices just fine, I was just quite unprepared for the noisy clattering and extra voices.

I'm really grateful that this was made available, as it's a fantastic panel with very knowledgeable guests. I didn't know all the info about the SG1000 etc, and I also had no idea that America bailed on the Master System so early. I can't believe Sonic 1 was the last game released over there!

In the UK it was common at the time to maintain two 'prices' of consoles/computers, with lots of games being released on C64 alongside Amiga, and the Master System was a really great low-cost alternative to the other consoles. I always liked this approach to the market. but we don't see cross gen supported in the same way anymore.

Great episode, but one thing I would like to clarify is that in this episode (and others before) the Retronauts crew always seem to say NES was hardly existent in Europe and they had Master System instead. While this was true for the UK this wasn't the case for many European countries: I grew up in Belgium, and had family in both the Netherlands and France and all everybody seemed to play and talk about were NES games, except the lone kid in school who got a Master system....

My impression was that in many countries in Europe, it was pretty split between Nes and Master System. In Norway where I live, I think the Nes was slightly more popular in its time, but the Master System was way more succesful as a budget console during the early 90s, and thus gained a lot of mindshare that way.

In Australia, from what I saw anyway, The Master System didn't hit it's stride until the Master System II.

Few people I knew had a regular Master System - the MSII was in quite a few friends houses. The addition of Alex Kidd in Miracle World as a pack in was pretty huge too, even though I never got good at the game.

The Master System also owes a lot to the fact that the Game Gear exists - the majority of GG games were also Master System titles with edits - like Sonic 2, Sonic Chaos. And because a lot of licensed games got their handheld versions (Lion King, Cool Spot) getting them on the Master System as well was pretty easy.

If it was a game on the MS in Europe, more than likely that game came out on the Game Gear in America.

I did know kids who had Nintendo growing up for sure - in fact those kids tended to have a shitload of games like the Mario titles, Boy and his Blob, Skate or Die etc, usually way more than MSII owners.

If anything I didn't know a single people who owned a Castlevania, Mega Man or Metal Gear game. I think the only one I ever saw was Mega Man 6 at a video rental place. I hired Mega Man I GB before I knew what Mega Man was otherwise.

I remember things backwards to you--SMS owners owned tons of games, NES owners had the typical pack-in games like SMB and Duck Hunt but only the hardcore owners owned anything else.

Little Samson is one of the few hard to find games that's actually worth playing.

Hell I'd say overall its the best of them.

Resident Evil is the name of the series in every Western country, not just America.

The new controls absolutely do cause issues with camera angle changes, just as the guest who actually played REmake on the PS4/XB1 said. Overall, I liked using them when I played it again on PS4, but it's not an improvement in every way on the default controls, just in some ways.

i have no idea

sorry i didnt mean to turn this into "what did bob get wrong"
i just thought him v shane was funny

(and i'm assuming all in good fun)

Oh yeah, definitely. I was just curious because I don't remember anything egregious being said about the PSP Go by anybody.

Edit: Nevermind, for some reason I read PSP Go in the tweet. Just gonna boil it all down to Shane being Shane :P

It was all in good fun and I didn't take it personally. Shane is just 800 years older than me and was in the industry at the time so he likely has a very different perspective.

I've listened to the PSP episode a couple of times. What did Bob say that was wrong about the PSP Go again?

Shane is the worst Sony-fanboy in the world. Bobs mistake was not being 200% positive about it, considering some of the flaws (like the UMDs), and talking about the PSP being slightly in the shadow of the DS (which is true).

I got a bit behind (and apparently have been listening all out of order lately) but I really enjoy the mixtape micros every time. Nice selection in the towns one.

The idea that the only legitimate historical perspective on the PSP is to absolutely adore it in every way is pretty hilarious to me.

UMD severely limited the Vita's uptake in Japan in the early years, but beyond that, eh, just another wacky Sony format.

Resident Evil episode was pretty dope and the only comment I can think of was why you didn't go on to include just one more title, namely Code Veronica. CV is in many ways the other side of the pre RE4 coin and a companion piece to the changing landscape of the series. CV is a long and convoluted last gasp of the then tired out formula, only this time on a new generation of consoles. Like the Dreamcast itself it is stuck firmly between eras.

Look, I love the PSP for all its wacky games, the remakes of the PS1-era rpgs and tons more, and I think it was a great system. But yeah, not perfect for sure :)

Anyways, we were talking about the Genesis-game Jewel Master over in the Genesis-appreciation thread, and AmyS laid out the theory that this game was indeed the retooled Altered Beast 2 that was talked about being in development at the time. Discussion starts with some very interesting scans herehttp://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=202939655&postcount=16438, and since none of us really know, I guess I could post it here in this thread where I know a few excellent gaming historians frequent.
