Retronauts Podcast Thread

Agreed. So many times podcasts get mentioned on here like Bombcast, Easy Allies, etc. but this might be one of the few times I've seen others talk about LT. They absolutely deserve a place among those shows.
I created a Talking Simpsons Patreon thread in OT :(

Yes, that was definitely the first time a Retronauts episode has ever included mention of a game's soundtrack within the larger context of our discussion of that game.

Thanks for all the hard work on Retronauts, everyone involved!
Retronauts East are definitely a different flavour but I greatly appreciate the different experience.

I'd love to see more specialist episodes with expert guests, or people drilling into specific things they enjoy. The episode on records and music collecting was really interesting, even though I don't expect to collect music any time soon.

I've recently started buying Game Boys and cartridges from ebay, and learning about biverting and other tricks is making me realise how many types of ways there are to enjoy these old games, and how different they feel through the different hardware. I had a similar experience with the Game Gear last year, where the art looked completely different to a pixel perfect emulator. It can be easy to lose sight of how some of these games truly felt on the original machines and hunger for a peculiar emulated version.

I had fallen behind on episodes, and I am just getting caught up. Just listened to The Simpson's Arcade episode. Good luck to Bob on full-time podcasting!

I was more talking about your "We didn't start the fire" parodies.

"They copied Kohler's guide" works well too!

I'm still writing, though...?

Sorry, Jeremy. I meant no offense. I love your work, and I'm a supporter of both your Patreon and the Retronauts one.

I was just wondering if there are any up-and-coming writers who are exploring retro games like you do.

Keep up the great work.

I was just thinking who is the successor to Jeremy Parish in gaming journalism? Not that anyone can actually replace journalism, but who in is writing now that comes the closest to his support for retro gaming?

What happened to Chris Kohler?

Chris is at Kotaku, but he's more of an actual editor than a writer-with-the-title-of-editor that you typically find at game outlets.

"Changing jobs in FFV is easy, but in real life... not so much, consult Dice" genius, genius, genius

The ffv episode is amazing. Im up for more ff episodes, guys!!

The discussion about Kohler's guide being stolen was pretty great, since it brought back memories of other people I'd follow having their import guides stolen for the official western guides. I actually remember one guy who did MegaTen import guides being grumpy about SMT Nocturne getting announced for the US, since he was sure that they would probably rip off his guide.

Then it turned out that he got approached to work on the official guide due to his preexisting knowledge of the game.

Not all publishers were super shady about guides! My first-ever professional games writing gig was reworking my Chrono Cross GameFAQs import FAQ into a proper guide for Gamespot. They paid a ridiculous amount of money for me to adapt something they could have just stealthily plagiarized with no one the wiser.

And my goal is to cover every numbered FF (that qualifies as retro under our 10-year rule) by the end of next year, along with notable side excursions like Tactics and uhhh... Chocobo Racing? I dunno.

"This is a Micro episode, so it's only going to be 20 minutes long." - Said with 37 minutes remaining in the podcast. Ah, the beauty of spontaneous conversations that spiral out of control.

Woah - what the heck is up with these voodoo-esque smart ads?

I just started retronauts from the beginning (of the reboot) about four or five months ago, and have almost caught up to present-day. I just listened to the Splatterhouse episode from MGC, which was released in the middle of May, and at the end there was a random clip from a newscaster talking about Chris Christie shutting down NJ's beaches, and about Trump tweeting out the gif of him beating up CNN.

Not only did a random news segment catch me completely off guard, but those news events happened weeks after the posting date of the podcast...

It freaked me the hell out! I was alone in my apartment when it happened, and for a few seconds I thought I was hallucinating or something. One of those acid flashbacks the kids are always talk about.

Not another recent episode I was listening to in my car over the weekend, when all of the sudden a drunk driving PSA came on and mentioned my state specifically by name. I thought the radio had been flipped on by mistake, but nope.

Seriously, what devilry is this? I've been going out of order with some of the episodes, so maybe they explain this marketing tech in a show I haven't listened to yet, but hoo boy is it freaky. I listen to a ton of podcasts, have been for years, and this is the very first time I've experienced something on this level. It actually feels rather intrusive and off-putting, but I like retronauts so much that I'll suffer through the spookiness to keep getting that classic gaming goodness.

Quantum Kabuki Fighter showed ASM code, and it was from the actual game!

I'm one of those weirdos who really liked Dig Dug: Digging Strike. Despite never really ever playing regular Dig Dug or Driller games, I thought it was a good way to make an arcade game into a level-based console game, and it used the dual-screen nature of the DS pretty well too.

I'm sure it was a pretty cheap game to make. Both it and Pac 'N Roll are some of the best DS games Namco developed and will ultimately be forgotten.

Fun Mr. Driller fact, Mr. Driller 2 was designed to use the cheaper System 10 board, instead of the System 12 used for Mr. Driller 1. The System 10 was released in 2000 and seems to have been used for all of Namco's 2D games, like Taiko No Tatsujin.

I love Drill Land so much, and Drindy Adventure remains one of my favourite games of all time. I really like Boulder Dash and Dig Dug and other boulder dropping games, but Drindy Adventure has a really slow and methodical puzzle approach to this gameplay.

I bought Digging Strike when it came out but it vanished in the mail! :( You make me want to dig up (sigh) another copy.

You can get hammer Mario to slide if you are already sliding when you get the power up:

Best thing to do while playing 2 players is to intentionally die before a toad house, or the card game. So your little sibling has to beat the level, and then you get powerup etc. All is fair when playing with younger siblings.

Thanks for the excellent companion piece!

4 player Battle Mode in Drill Land remains one of my favourite ever four player games, making clever use of controller rumble to indicate hidden items in the ground. I've played countless hours of. 2 vs 2.

Hey Jeremy and Bob,

Could you please advertise your live events better.

Jeremy mentioning you're going to be at Long Island Retro Gaming Expo Next weekend offhand on Monday's advance episode was the first time you mentioned it at all.

Do a blog post, tweet, and throw some bumpers into the advance and regular episodes the week everything is confirmed.

Before you get to the further Metroidvanias in the 16-bit era, I wondered - what would you consider a game like Quackshot on the Megadrive to be?

While the game has a map where you can go to multiple locations from the beginning, you'll only be able to go so far unless you have an item, which you get from another level.

You can't get to the second half of Duckburg until you go get another item from Mexico, which will allow you to progress further to get another item, which is required for getting into transylvania. It has some of the hallmarks of a Metroid, but only some levels requiring backtracking - you set up warp points once you hit some parts of levels.

Additionally, Tails Adventure on the Game Gear has elements too - you have an overworld map, play through levels to get items, which in turn will unlock new paths in older levels to unlock more levels.

was listening to the mr. driller episode and Jeremy mentioned Christian Nutt. which made me think ...what the fuck happened to Christian Nutt? did he leave the industry? his Twitter is locked now. I know he was at gamasutra for a while

From what I understand, Christian chose to basically bow out of the press and seek a more private life away from the internet after the shitshow that was GG. I can't blame him, and am glad to respect his wishes.

Someone deeply disgusted by the absolute awfulness of a sizable percentage of the gaming audience, and by GG's bigoted hate attacks against minority voices in the medium, so far as I know.

Yeah, Christian used to be on the Tinycsst, but vanished off the face of the internet 2 years ago. I was reading an old EGM and found a letter written by him in it. Went to tag him on Twitter, but he made his account private and appears to have moved on from games. Hope everything is alright, and he's living a nice, normal life now.

On topic- I thought the first podcast with Kim and Kishi was really rough, but this weeks was a massive improvement. Less talking over each other, less dead air, less nervousness!

As it was getting on towards the end of the Metroidvania episode I was thinking that I could totally listen to Jeremy, Benj and Chris go on about this for another two hours and that they should've done it as two episodes, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover they in fact did. I know Chris is plenty busy with his own stuff but I like the three-way dynamic with this particular crowd, I'd definitely be up for more East with Chris as a guest.

Listened to the FF V episode the other day, and I gnashed my teeth every time that guy said FF V did "a throwback" to a game that came out far later than it did, lol.

ah thats such a shame. hope he's doing well, then

Agree. Like that crew and like the fact that we get different flavors thanks to very different casts now.

Topic idea for a micro ep: Exploration of the dinosaur craze of the late 80s/early 90s. Would be perfect to release in the run up to Mario Odyssey, which lets Mario turn into a T-Rex.

I remember when Jeremy willed the Final Fantasy Tactics remake into being too, and the Rondo of Blood remake.

We need Jeremy to get Mother 3 over here.
