Retronauts Podcast Thread

Excellent episode on PlayStation, the Iwata moment was handled brilliantly too.

Jeremy, did you do the cover art for episdoe? It is fantastic.

Ridge Racer was re-released on PlayStation but not as Ridge Racer Revolution, that is a different game. Ridge Racer was released again with R4 in a high resolution mode.

The show is great contentwise (as always), but two episodes in a row with audio problems make me weary of the next one. At least this one is only a volume problem.

I did know that, but this has been on my hard drive since right before the archive disappeared the first time, plus it's a blast skipping around because of how it's improperly tagged. I'm in the early days of the Live era now!

Keep going!

You'll reach the sonic episode soon!

I got there two days ago...while I was stuck in a traffic jam caused by a downed telephone pole on the only route I could take to my next destination. Listened to the entire episode without moving a single inch.

They record them in batches, so any problems they encounter during one session will probably present themselves over several episodes.

One neat thing about recording ahead of time is that the host will (probably) never get the month wrong as the only time its brought up (usually) is an estimate. Same cannot be said of Retronauts classic!

Yep a 60 frame version.
It also had on the disc, demos for tekken 3 and klonoa as well as some videos for other games, if i remember rightly.

Maybe in the States in Europe it was just Ridge Racer and ran at 50hz :(

Wasn't it called Ridge Racer Turbo or something in the States? In Europe it was Ridge Racer High Spec demo haha.

Ahhhh, i'm from the UK, but i had the Japanese import.

Yeah, like I said earlier in the thread, we had an equipment issue we didn't catch when we recorded three episodes--Super Mario World, Chrongaming, and Slow Life Games. Since then I've been EXTRA meticulous about checking things so that problem won't happen again.

Not sure why the volume was so low on that last one, but it wasn't an issue with the recording.

I'd personally love to hear an episode on Intelligent Systems. Fire Emblem, Famicom Wars, their brilliant apex (Thousand Year Door, Path of Radiance, Advance Wars, etc.) in the mid-aughts. I'm sure there are a lot of development stories to be shared.

Such a shame that we never got a PlayStation port of Rave Racer, loved that game in the arcades. Rage Racer was a decent substitute mind.

It's weird I grew up on games from my Spectrum ZX and everything in between then and now yet it's PlayStation I have the most nostalgia for.

Any plans for a call-in episode? I know some didn't like the Retronauts Live format but I thought it was fun and unpredictable (it also brought us the legendary Sonic episode). Either way I think it'd be neat to have one once or twice a season or something.

Rakugaki Showtime is absolutely nothing like Yuu Yuu Hakusho: Makyou Toitsusen. Guardian Heroes has more in common, maybe.

OK, I was just listening to the chrongaming episode. In it I think Dr. Sparkle mentioned a show, or blog series that looked at console RPGs chronologically via the lens of CRPGS. It sounded like he said it was something like RPG Con-saur or something odd like that I looked for that, or RPG Connoisseur, and couldn't find anyhting. Anyone know what he was talking about?

i missed out on pc gaming, only had console games growing up. so i never played lucasarts adventure games etc as a kid

but for some reason, the monkey island theme song makes me feel SO nostalgic every time i hear it
its bizarre

also, it's such a good song

Thankfully, Sean C in the comments helpfully compiled a list of chronogaming web sites, both current and defunct:

The one you're thinking of is the RPG Consoler:

Thanks, had found it already. It's an interesting site, though it does seem a wee bit harsh. Still up until the point I read, Ys and Phantasy Star 1 were the best RPGs he had played thus far, it does remind me to continue with the blog though.

I finished listening to all of the retro retronauts. Pretty fun oral history of 1up to go along with all of the old games talk.

Yes! I was always hoping Rave Racer would come.
Rage Racer was ok, but I knew what could have been.

I quickly forgot about it when R4 came out. A convenient distraction haha.
It's strange, I too have the best memories of the ps1 era, despite growing up with TI99/4A and NES.

So nice, I listened to the episode twice last week. That was one of the best episodes ever. The 1UP podcast from 2008 makes for an amusing companion piece as Shane has MAXIMUM HYPE for MGS4.

"Who's your favorite Metal Gear?!"

So nice to hear American games people pronouncing Kojima properly after hearing the Giant Bomb guys say "Ko-JI-ma" thousands of times over the past year as they played thru MGS1 thru 4.

JEREMY I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU LIKE ABOUT METAL GEAR IF IT ISN'T MERCENARY GROUPS NAMED AFTER BOWIE SONGS OR SNAKE-THEMED MOUNT RUSHMORES CARVED INTO BATTLESHIPS

Listening to this last night while playing Spelunky, waiting for MGSV the next day. Was a wonderful way to reminisce some of my favourite gaming memories. Great episode, everyone!

I don't know how but I completely missed this reboot. The SimCity micro episode really brought me back to the SNES days.. good stuff.

Did Shane really say "OH-tah-con"? Is it actually pronounced that way in Japanese? Anyway, great episode. Can't wait to play MGS V when I get back from vacation in a couple weeks.

I think the proper White Guy Pronunciation is [kuh-GEE-muh]. I kid, I kid. But if you say his name this way, you should probably be thumbing your overalls and chewing on a piece of straw at the same time.

Yes, it's based on the word "otaku." But the game doesn't pronounce it that way, so whatever.

The real crime was Jeremy's rendition of "patreon," but he's cleaned up his act.

Always a joy to hear Shane on the podcast. And I'm really glad there was a lot of positivity about MGS2, my favorite. MGS3 might be the more perfect game, but the ambition and totality of MGS2, that Shane spoke of with regard to the fanbase, the press, and all its future predictions, make it the best to me.

Surprisingly, the one thing that really bothered me about MGS4 is the Meryl/Snake stuff. Their first meeting is great, and even again in Act 3 is ok, but the way Snake (and, by extension, Kojima) cuts it all off is frustrating and a waste, not to mention the stupid Johnny love plot. MGS4 is such a frustrating mess.

For those wonder, the two Dead Cell characters cut from MGS2 were Old Boy, a German paratrooper who is over 100 years old (and I'm assuming a former Nazi as a result), and Chinaman, a Vietnamese martial arts master.
