Retronauts Podcast Thread

I enjoy Retronauts threads and comments and always read them, though I'm regularly baffled when someone interprets an omission for the sake of time some sort of purposeful, narrative-twisting initiative on our part. And then there's the people who zero in on an off-the-cuff comment or extemporaneous thought, as opposed to the surrounding 99.9% of the episode they actually enjoyed.

(I made a three-second joke that Trump fans would like EarthBound because it involves beating up hippies and I swear some dude sent me roughly 2000 words about it.)

Sheesh, I don’t get why you guys can’t cover in exhaustive detail a console that was on the market for 6 years, was in development for 3+ years, had 300 games and numerous note-worthy peripherals in a 90-minute podcast. Pathetic.

I hope my sarcasm was obvious enough. I really enjoyed the episode and am very grateful for every one you do, especially considering it is not your day job, the quality is excellent and the compensation for your time is minimal.

That sucks that you guys have to deal with that, but i suppose that's the unfortunate reality of putting yourselves out there on the internet. I honestly prefer it when you guys are more off-the-cuff and conversational because that's the show I originally fell in love with. Though, I understand if your don't want to have to deal with a bunch of blowback from crazies every episode. Sometimes it feels like you all are censoring yourselves in order to not offend people who will find a reason to be offended not matter what.

I for one am furious they didn't spend 20 minutes on Top Gear Overdrive and it's unlockable taco car!
 
I liked the episode. I was hoping for more extensive technical talk about the hardware development like the latest SNES look back but if there arent any interesting facts then what can you do?

Was the Nintendo DD just a straight up zip drive because every interaction I've had with those things has been horrible [CLICK].

Is there a list of topics of the old 1up episodes somewhere? I discovered them on iTunes, but they're just titled by episode number and the descriptions are impossible to read on my phone.

Amazing podcast by the way, just discovered it this week and loved the Final Fantasy episode.
 
Thank you for doing the DQ7 episode today Jeremy. It convinced me to return the copy of DQ7 I bought this weekend, but haven't opened!

I know with the recording schedule doing regular episodes in time with new (re) releases is impossible, but I think the Micro format is a great way to tackle these topics, and hope we see more of them in the future.

What? I'm assuming you mean you bought a PSX copy and are returning it to get a 3DS one then?

I need to not have so much responsibility and find time to actually play a game. The most I get to interact with video games nowadays is listening to Retronauts.

I may have misinterpreted your conclusion, but what I got from the episode is that it's not necessarily that the game is more streamlined and friendly, it's that you (as a player) are more receptive to the idea of a game with a slower pace, and that has allowed you to see why people enjoyed the game originally.

I'm basically the complete opposite- Persona 3 Portable is one of my 5 favorite games of all time, but I completely bounced of Persona 3 FES when it was released. By reducing the ability/need to walk around town with a simple set of point and click menus and by removing cutscenes and replacing them with Visual Novel style voiced dialog boxes you could read at your own pace, the game was more engaging to me, as I didn't feel like I was "wasting time". I did not like Persona 4 Golden as much as P3P when I got to play it, because it did not have these "compromises" that were needed on the PSP hardware to run a game like P3P.

I've never been a fan of the "slow life" games like Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, ect- my favorite games are Fighters, Sports, Puzzle games, and arcade style experiences- stuff that I can quickly pick up and play. From the limited amount I had read on the game on Social Media/GAF, I was under the impression that this game had been significantly reworked in order to speed up it's pace. Jeremy's comment that it still took him over 2 hours to get into the first battle was enough to tell me that I am going to hate this game if I try to play it. I picked it up because I wanted something to play on my 3DS this fall - i've nearly completed Picross 3D 2, have no interest in Yokai Watch/Pokemon/SMT4,and own Mario Maker on WiiU, so Dragon Quest was my choice by default. I guess I'll do some backlog stuff this fall instead- I haven't played FE: Fates Revalation yet, for example.
 
No, I've changed AND the game has changed. You can rush through and get to combat in a little more than an hour... but I realize now that's missing the point of Dragon Quest. So I chose to take a slow approach, even though I could have advanced the game in half the time.

The chrono cross / radical dreamers podcast from the 1up days is still my favorite retronauts episode. I really hope for a full on xenogears episode instead of spoken essay in micro episode
 
My opinions of Dragon Quest VII's pacing are limited to me thinking back to when I played through 99.9% of it on a TV 15 years ago, and thinking how I would literally not have any patience for that shit in 2016. (Though I don't remember it bothering me at the time.) I'm actually looking forward to digging into DQVII 3DS because it's super easy for me to sink 100 hours into a game on that platform without even realizing it.

Yeah this is a game that has been crying out for portability for years. I know multiple people who only ever finished it because they could rip it to their CFW'ed PSP.

I'm sure it's sacrilegious, but I have to agree with you and Bob. That's probably due in part to me playing Super Punch Out before Punch Out, but since I can't go back and reverse that, it's just how I'll always see it. I first played Super Punch Out when I was 8 years old and was never able to beat it until I finally took down Nick Bruiser at age 25 after many, many attempts. I tried to go back and do it since then and couldn't even touch him, so if I can't even replicate that, I doubt I'll ever stand a chance at taking down Tyson.
 
I don't think I mentioned this in the podcast, but it took me YEARS to make the connection that Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! was meant to be the same game as the arcade Punch-Out!! (which I remembered seeing when it was new, but whose name I'd forgotten). The arcade game's graphics were so, so far ahead of their time.
 
Even if it's just a "Micro", you guys should get Jeff Gerstmann to tallk about Atari 8 Bit Computers.

I need Rescue on Fractalus discussed on Retronauts!

Make it about that time in PC gaming in general so Jeremy can bust out his region specific Texas Instruments knowledge if you need to.

I never heard about Pizza Pasta until this episode. Now I have a headcanon that Mad Clown is Pizza Pasta really letting himself go.

As others have said, it's way different.

There were actually six distinct games based on the first Batman movie: Amiga (and several other platforms popular in Europe), NES, Genesis/Mega Drive, PC Engine (only in Japan), Game Boy and arcade.

I think most would agree the NES version is the best game of the bunch -- though it's also arguably the worst depiction of Batman himself and his universe. (As stated in the most recent Retronauts! :-) )
 
I'm going to suggest that it's a big omission to have a TMNT NES episode that doesn't mention the Famicom game "Getsu Fuuma Den".

That's the game that they re-worked into TMNT (you could think of it as a new game using the same engine). Same play style, same division between overworld and sidescrolling sections, many of the same sound effects. It's kind of an Osu! Tatakae! Ouedan -> Elite Beat Agents kind of situation.

Another piece of trivia is that TMNT NES was released in Japan before the TMNT brand was worldwide. So it has its own Japanese name with a kanji title... Gekikame Ninja Den. "Den" just means legend and lots of titles have it, but it might be a slight reference to kinship with Getsu Fuuma Den. Later TMNT games in Japan would just be called TMNT... and that's why our TMNT2 and 3 are their TMNT1 and 2.

Sorry, but that didn't come up in my research. In fact, the Wikipedia page doesn't even mention TMNT.

Playing Getsu Fuuma Den is believing. It's very obviously cut from the same cloth.

Check the Hardcore Gaming 101 for GFD and they mention TMNT as a spiritual sequel.

I haven't played much of my copy of GFD but I think it's the superior game.
 
My favorite classic era comic book game is the PS1/N64 Spiderman game made by Activision. Based on the animated series and developed by the Tony Hawk team. Way better than the more well known PS2 games based on the movies.
