Reuters quoted that ioi site, video inside!

What's the story behind that site? Haven't their numbers / estimates gotten better or is it all still bs? He's gotta have some insider connections by now.

ioi is still confused about NPD #s

Personally, and this is just an opinion and in an off-the-record kind of way, looking at month to month trends it definitely seems evident to me that maybe NPD do not get all of their data in by when they have to release it. They always seem to go higher or lower on a title then adjust it back / forward the following month. 2.7m for Brawl last month seemed a little too high - especially with Nintendo saying 1.4m week one but then to drop to ~300k this month is way out of line with everything we have been getting as well as common sense in general. Vegas 2 did 750k last month, 100k this month on NPD. That is an enormous dropoff - down to ~15k a week if you assume a dropoff throughout April. Seems too extreme but then I thought they seemed very high last month. Our COD4 figures have been a lot bigger recently (Game of the Year edition gave a good boost) but they show sales dropping after being huge Jan-Feb and much higher than us.

I dunno, all just seems too random to me. Every other country in the world seems to have regular, fairly predictable sales patterns but NPD just jumps up and down fairly inexplicably. Across all our data, 360 and PS3 had their biggest weeks of the year at GTA launch and saw good increases the week before - this is true across the board. All the big analysts followed our lead in saying 300k+ months for 360 / PS3 (many much higher - we got slated for being so low if anything) and yet NPD data comes in over 100k below. I am well aware they have ~60% direct coverage and I am not accusing them of foul play but something just doesn't add up.

I'd bet a fortune that they will have huge figures for May - despite all indications to me showing that sales have dropped back to pre-GTA IV levels in just one week. Maybe we are missing a trick and for some reason all of our stores follow totally different buying trends, but I'd find that hard to believe.

bwhaha
We also work closely with a number of analysts and manufacturers who give us their thoughts on whether things are up or down in a particular week based on their sources who feed them snippets of top-level trends.

So it's basically classic ioi - when the numbers released by a genuine tracking firm don't match his numbers, there must be something wrong with the numbers from the tracking organisation.

Still the same old song & dance.

His big ego thinks his dice-thrown or randomly averaged numbers are better than NPD? :lol

So it's still the old saying that he has all the shits from "insiders" but he can never name or prove them.

Doesn't mention the BS at all...

(call to arms)

Well at least there is a "Controversy" section... at the very bottom.

The NeoGAF forums which also gets the NPD report and is known to provide significant analysis on its numbers, alleges that the numbers on ******** are mostly made up or stolen. This disdain has motivated forum administers and moderators to ban quoting, linking, and even typing the name of the site in forum conversation.

What's so hard to understand about Brawl numbers ? If we use the film industry model, 1.4 million the first week, 0.7 million the second week after a ~50% dropoff, 0.35 million the third week and 0.2 million in the fourth week, which is about 2.7 millions for the whole month.

I know the VG industry isn't like the movie industry, since you sell new consoles and especially with Nintendo games which tend to have longer legs, but jeez, there's nothing shady and impossible about Brawl numbers.

Chartzzzz shows that PS3 has been outselling 360 in the US for some time. So I'm surprised we haven't had the nib95 thread "NPD are 360 biased?"

Even if you don't have any knowledge on the subject whatsoever, a site which ends in "chartZ" should give you an idea that it may not be the most credible site there is.

Still BS. Latest example was when Sven from Capcom confirmed that their number for Okami Wii (100k) was indeed not correct.

Of all things to note, they went with the 'Jeff Bell trolls a Master Ninja' topic? :lol
That was one of GAF's biggest contributions to society.

Could someone find that googlesearch-image of VG Chartz with the quote "it's a quessing game, really...". I could only find
********.com | News
22. elokuu 2007 ... Nobody really know and neither do I or anyone else know the accuracy of VG Chartz figures since we don't have "fact" to compare it to. ...

I like to read the Europe/PAL threads on their message boards as the data is released to see the terrible maths and leaping to conclusions followed by the rapid back-peddling as they read GAF and other sources that have more plausible explanations. :lol

I'd never dream of registering or posting to correct them though as it only encourages them (although I do spot the occasional GAFfer there though).

Holy shit. I think that this addition is a nice thing to clarify that ioi's numbers are crap.

They just undid this - apparently not notable - so are probably watching this thread and the Wiki one.

I put a note in the discussion page about their factual inaccuracies that were pointed out by someone else for March.

If anyone has news site links that point out the constantly shifting after the fact nature of the site's 'data' now is the time to add them and reinstate the controversy part of the article.

The "Rhonin the wizard" guy who undid the NeoGaf part also seems to be posting to the ioisite, user id=6844
Let them play with their wiki :)

He's not the only person puzzled by the 360 and PS3's numbers in April. I'm completely shocked about them as well and I DO believe something is off.

I don't suspect foul play nor do I have proof to suggest that my belief that something is off is remotely accurate, but I'll trust my gut instinct on this one.

Do the NPDs still guesstimate for Wal Mart and Sams? Is this pdf of their methodology still accurate and if not is there an updated version available? I'm not saying they're pulling numbers out of a hat, but I like full disclosure and transparency when looking at any kind of statistical data.

For everyone else: It is in one of ioi's comments.

If you want to find it, just google for the date that is in that screenshot.

So wait... the way they come up with their numbers is by guessing?

Does he at least correct his numbers after his guesses don't turn up accurate and replace them with more accurate numbers?

No. That would be admitting he was wrong.

ioi's claim is that he extrapolates them using a super-secret process based on information provided to him by "insiders" at various retail outlets.

(In reality, yeah: guessing.)

I don't know that that's really an "at least."

I don't know that that's really an "at least."

But anecdotal evidence SUCKS when extrapolating "All 6 units this week at this store" to "160,000 sold this week in the country"

When you factor up numbers THAT much, it's just WRONG. Fucking WRONG.

I think I'll create a site called dvdvsbluraychartz and make up some numbers for dvd and blu ray sales. Hopefully I can get the kind of traffic ioi is getting and I can start making some money off some dumb kids who'll believe my numbers.
