Revolution Report: Is Hollywood based off Flipper, a current or upcoming PC architecture, or built from the ground up?

Swinimer: Hollywood is a specific design and is in no way reflective of PC technology. Even when the Flipper chips came out, people were asking that question: "Is this a spin-off of something done on the PC?", and the answer is no. It is designed the same as the Flipper was -- from the ground up for a specific console. Totally different sort of architecture from what you might find on the PC. Certainly, there are some underlying values—you know, how you get graphics on the screen—that's there. It's not, for example, like we took a PC design and said 'oh, you know what? If we tweak this and test this, it will work in a console.' [That's] not the case.

IGN's credibility -1

The key thing to keep in mind is that Nintendo, with ATI's help, is trying to create a game console where you don't have to look at [specs].
What does he mean by that?

Where is that from?

He means you dont have to look at the specs to know it's inferior to the real next-gen consoles. AMIRITE DRINKY!?

Ooorrr....

He means that Hollywood is so advanced that it can outperform the competition at only a fraction of the specs and cost.

Its all about effeciency.

Wow, that is a fantastic interview. I am really very impressed with how professional Revolution Report is during it and the quality of the questions.

You know, Flipper was never released on PC ;).

True it's slightly ambiguous, but the question asks them which of 3 possibilities Hollywood is and they go for built from the ground up.

That does suggest it will be a bit more than just Flipper with more RAM which IGN said, and atleast raise the possibility of including something like ShaderModel 3.0?

If Hollywood is like a next-generation Flipper, the Revolution will be in nice shape for graphics. Flipper was not considered to be very powerful in 2001, but look at what it did on RE4, Wind Waker, etc.

Hollywood will seem weak as far as pipelines, pixels/sec, etc, but will be mighty as far as special features and efficiency, just like Flipper. I'm not saying Hollywood = a faster Flipper. no, I think Hollywood will be mostly new. just that it will have the same design-philosephy as Flipper.

I was thinking, if we simply look at the numbers, and go with what developers said(from IGN's report), the Rev's GPU is 2-3 times faster than flipper, which would mean it ranges from 324-486 Mghz. The Xbox 360's GPU is 500 Mghz, so that doesn't seem too bad, really. Of course, the gap in RAM is gigantic, and there are other factors like pipelines and shit that we don't know about yet that also deal with graphics. I grew quite fond of the GC's water effects and wouldn't mind if the Hollywood focused on that too. :)

remember, a 200 Mhz GPU can totally outclass a 400 Mhz GPU - what really matters is the architecture, pipes, ALUs, etc.

Yeah, good point. By the way, does processor speed matter for graphics or is that independent?

Uh, I'm sure SM3.0 or something equivalent (but more likely SM3.0 as Nintendo wants this dev-friendly) will be in the Revolution.

Make a console where the games are so fun that you don't care what the games look like.

No. ATI has no bearing on how Revolution will play. Anyone can see, they're very likely refering to visual impression versus spec sheets, as in visual effects and efficiency versus raw power.

It's like pre-rendered movies on the PSX, particularly in the Final Fantasy games, it didn't exactly take a beast to run those movies, but most people didn't really know that they just looked at it and went 'wow, I dunno how this works but it looks good'. Same thing that happened with the Donkey Kong Country games, I'm not saying that they would have such a solution today but you never know, I'm merely citing an example of what I think they mean by 'not having to look at spec sheets'.

1up picks up on RR's interview

No one knows exactly to expect from Revolution visually. The Tokyo Game Show demos were obviously shown using graphics technology meant to underscore Revolution's gameplay concepts instead of visual prowess, a stark contrast to both Microsoft and Sony's approaches.
It's well known ATI is behind Revolution's GPU, though, and a CES interview with the company and website Revolution Report reveals a little more about what can be expected. A baited question tries to snare ATI into comparing Revolution's GPU to the capabilities of Xbox 360 and PlayStation, but it doesn't work.

ATI wouldn't specifically state if Hollywood, the codename given to the Revolution GPU, is based off GameCube's Flipper GPU, instead saying it wasn't based off any PC architecture.

Swinimer's comments aren't explicit, but seem to imply Hollywood is a completely unique design from ATI.

That doesn't reveal much about Revolution we didn't already know, but it shouldn't be much longer until that problem is solved. How many more days until E3?
