Rick Moranis Says He Isn't Retired

If he accepted the role, it would've been a bit role and people would say he did it for more money(even if that wasn't remotely true).

Thats a stretch.

So what if it's a bit role. It's exposure and a nod to his fans from his most popular movie. It would have been his best bet at a comeback.

Do the people advocating Spaceballs 2 really think it would live up to even half the expectations? Did you see the animated series?

This is awesome. I'm glad there's someone who can say no to projects like this.

Why? It's what his fans would have wanted, to see their favorite classic characters make cameos while a whole new generation is introduced to GhostBusters. Something for the new generation and something for the older generation. Win-win to me.

The guy is a comedian not some heavy drama actor. His portfolio involves "The Little Giants", THREE "Honey I Shrunk/Blew up the Kids", "SpaceBalls" and "The Flintstones". How is he "too good" to show up for a GhostBusters cameo like the bulk of the cast for his fans?

It's funny how many people struggle to make it big in Hollywood, and yet people have been begging him to come back to film for nearly twenty years and has no major interest.

Oh well. Still love his work.

He doesn't need his own series. Someone like Wes Anderson or Noah Baumbach just need to offer him a supporting actor in a movie and he'll be on the map again. Hell, I could easily see him being able to do drama roles.

Why is he obligated? He doesn't owe anyone anything.

He just doesn't care for it? I mean, he stopped acting to raise his children. His priorities probably changed. They asked him to do a cameo on a movie series he was already part of, and to him it wasn't worth it. Sure you can say 'but it's for the fans', but sometimes the fans should take into consideration what the actor wants.

Always respected that he dialed it back after his wife died and focused more and more on his family. Do so now that he wants to come back but on his own terms. I would have liked to see him show up in the new film but I get why he wouldn't want to do it.

Thinking about it more It's not even like he's playing his old character either as this isn't the same universe. That's what's not really grabbing me about these cameos in general to be honest. Sure the old actors will show up to say something but it's not he characters I enjoyed in the first two films so what's really the point? I can see them as actors in other films. That's a different topic.

He now looks like the kind of guy that could play an authoritative type, or a Senator.

He should try more serious roles.

Since when does Rick Moranis have to do what "the fans" want? Fuck that noise.

He stopped acting to raise his children. I can understand and wholly respect that.

Nerds who have hard-ons for shoe-horning fanservice cameos into popular IPs can't.

It's not that he is obligated, it's that he seems to wanna act again but he is turning down a role that could bring him back to relevancy. I mean Betty White got work again with simple cameos like the SNL push for her to host. In all honesty, I personally don't care. Never been a fan of his and whether he is there or not, I will still go to enjoy a new GhostBusters.

Good for Rick. I'd love to see him back doing stuff but the man should have every right to choose what he does and doesn't want to do. It's the same reason I never got the hate Bill got for not wanting to do another Ghostbusters. As long as they're happy with what they are doing or not then good for them. If Rick ever does find something he wants to do though I'll gladly watch. At the same time if he doesn't then hell I'll still have respect for the man.

Your missing the point. He stopped acting for 18 years to raise his kids. They are now 18 or more years old and most likely wealthy. He is free to act and seems to want to seeing as he doesn't want to be considered "retired". So if you want movie studios to invest in involving you in movies you have to appeal to your fanbase or even let them know your not dead. A cameo in the new and most likely successful GhostBusters movies would go a long way to brining him back to relevancy. I mean other seasoned actors are cameoing in the same movie and aren't as thirsty to act.

Without Candy, though?

This might be disrespectful, but if Spaceballs 2 comes to pass, I want Barf to not be in it, and I want Mel Brooks to write this dark joke:

Lone Starr leaves Druidia and goes on space adventures. He eventually returns for his appearance in the second movie, only Barf isn't with him. Princess Vespa and the others wonder where Barf is.

"Where is your partner? The mawg, Barf?"

"Well...I had to put him down".

Is that too dark and/or disrespectful for Brooks?

You are missing the point. This interview isn't some yell for attention or desperation move. He has worked on stuff in the last 18 years. If he is interested in a project, he will work on it. He wasn't interested in a appearing in a reboot of a franchise he was already a part of. That's it.

Except he is out right stating he wants to work on something he's interested in, and he's not interested in this. Where are you picking up he's thirsty? He directly says he still turns down roles. He's been away 18 yrs and not in a hurry to jump into a crappy cameo he's not interested in,or in a hurry in general.

He doesn't need to cameo in a movie to have some sudden return to whatever you're deeming as relevancy. The request for him to even be in this new one shows that he could/would be a "get."

While I respect the hell out of him for leaving on his own terms to raise his kids (after his wife's passing), he's done multiple interviews like this, and it comes off as weird. There's definitely a bit of arrogance to what he's said over the years, as if he's some incredibly established dramatic actor, when it's like: "Dude, you were a reasonably successful comedic actor who cashed in on a couple of franchises."

It's great that he wants to be picky. Go ahead and do that. But to have multiple interviews where you're basically telling people to back off and announce that you're picky about roles? It's a weird look. He's a guy who achieved success kind of in spite of his abilities, and it's left him in a position that few actors enjoy. But it's probably also made him lose sight of what he really was as an actor.

Kids also grew up watching the Honey I Shrunk the Kids films... He doesn't need a crappy role in what might be a flop of a movie in order to gain acclaim and recognition back.

Just because Dan Aykroid is hard up for money doesn't mean he is.

Go enjoy the Ghostbusters reboot. Him being in or not in the film is irrelevant.

I just hope they'll make a Space Balls sequel and he's going to be back. He was by far the best thing about that movie.

Maybe it's his nice way of saying, "Look, I get that you people can't let your 80s nostalgia go. I did, so fuck off. Give me something new to do. PS I don't want to do comedy, thanks."

Totally valid. And I applaud him for wanting to diversify. I wouldn't want him to do some lazy cash-in crap.

But then I would point out that it's interesting that he's been in this holding pattern for so long, waiting for roles. You know, maybe there's a chance that studios don't really feel he'd be a capable actor for these "other" roles he seems to want. Just a thought.

I guess technically that's not retired but it's pretty close to it and he definitely seems to have retired from acting.

Studios think a lot of dumb shit that I don't agree with.

You could be right. Perhaps he'll turn up in a smaller indie film or something with a story he really likes.

Honey, remember that crazy dream I told you about where I shrunk the kids about 25 years ago? Well, today I actually shrunk them, and our grandkids!!! (Working Title)

Oh, I agree. Studios are ridiculous. But are any of us really clamoring for Rick Moranis' dramatic turn? Frankly, I'm not. I like the guy for a few things he's done, but there are plenty of other people who I'd rather watch in film than him. But maybe he's got some giant fanbase that's really pining for his big comeback.

Nah, if you're going to do a joke about Barf dying, you should go the "got into the garbage and ate some chocolate" route. Really, though, Spaceballs 2 just shouldn't be a thing, because it'd probably end up like that terrible animated series they did for G4.

What an interesting story. Every few years I'd wonder about Moranis and if he'd do any new films. Can't wait to see what he ends up agreeing to!

I have no reason to believe one way or another. This is literally the same story NPR did at least a year ago. Rick Moranis was a cool dude is still alive and would work for the right project. That's all I'm getting from it.
