Ridley Scott talks his 3D, 2-part Alien prequel

Ridley Scott is now firmly looking at his 3D "Alien" two-part prequel as his next project, the "Robin Hood" director telling UK paper The Independent that he expects the venture to take no prisoners.

"The film will be really tough, really nasty. It's the dark side of the moon. We are talking about gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet?" says Scott. "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindoff is polishing the first prequel's script set three decades before the events in the 1979 original film.

Scott takes a friendly jab at "Aliens" director James Cameron, seeing the success he had with the first sequel as a challenge he has to at least match with these films - "Jim's raised the bar and I've got to jump to it."

Meanwhile, Digital Spy reports that actress Gemma Arterton has indicated she'll meet with Scott about possibly starring in the planned prequels. Scott was apparently so impressed with her work in recent British thriller "The Disappearance of Alice Creed" that he wants to meet with her for the main female role.

Arterton however has a busy schedule including Richard E. Grant's cowboy comedy "In With the Outlaws", and the Ruth Rendell novel adaptation "The Keys To The Street".

More Aliens = good

It's been too long since Blade Runner. He finally decides to return to sci-fi now. It better be worth it.

Hey! I LIKED being in the CRUSADES more than ONCE!

Why does everything have to be in two parts these days? If your telling one story, tell it in one movie for fuck's sake. It didn't work with the Matrix or with Pirates of the Caribbean, and I doubt it will work with Potter or the Hobbit. I hope he knows what he's doing. I guess if somebody is going to do another Alien movie I'm glad it's him.

Aliens in 3D would be awesome if done right and not to cash in on 3D craze.
Scott will be shooting in native, so of course it will be done right.

More Aliens = bad.

The story has been told, this is only going to dilute it further.

I'd say it was depressing to see Scott attached to such nonsense, but he's already signed up to the Monopoly movie.

Then don't see it and let those of us who enjoy the franchise to have fun. Pretty simple eh?

I wish that the work he put into Heaven, Robin Hood and etc as far as world crafting could be put into a scifi world like Blade Runner.

Interested in this regardless though.

Not really.

If you idiots keep going to see these creatively bankrupt sequels they'll never stop.

Wasn't Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection bad enough for you? What about AvP and AvP2? How bad do the sequels have to get until you say enough is enough?

Haven't you learn anything from Star Wars and Indiana Jones?

The golden era of these films was 30 years ago and it's not coming back.

i'm optimistic. but whaaa, TWO part prequel? :O that's fantastic. they gotta turn out better than Resurrection, right?

i'm torn about 3D though.. i will want to see them in 3D but my gf won't (gives her headaches). damnit. fucking divisive new tech :/

This two parter and those movies are exactly the same. Yep.

Yes.

Christ, it's like the Sonic cycle but with '80s movies.

When these two films turn out shit you'll still be psyching yourself up for new Back to the Future sequels starring a CGI Michael J. Fox.

I'd like more of a quiet horror film like the first one, but that's been done (twice), so I don't see it happening again.

I also hope that Alien Harvest script was complete and utter bullshit though since it was so stupidly bad.

omfg. If you don't like it...DONT SEE IT. jesus christ...

I really wish I had hope for this movie, but I dont. Mentioning Cameron just lowers my expectations.

Don't worry, The Forever War is on the fast-track like Cameron's Battle Angel Alita and Rodriguez's Sin City 2. =/

The difference between this series and other series which have faltered in the last 10 years or s (James Bond, Star Trek/Wars) is that you don't need humans to be the main focus. That is something which I think hurt Alien 3 and Resurrection. You didn't need to have Ripley in one Alien situation after another. You could introduce new characters and scenarios, because the public comes to see the creatures first and foremost.

AVP 1& 2 suffered from a combination of ignoring the history of the two creatures and "bigger must be better".

The bottom line is if you have someone who is competent calling the shots (Scott, Cameron, and to an extent, Fincher) you will see a good product. If you have minimal studio interference, you will have a good product. Otherwise you have the last two Alien movies and the two AVP films.

I too would rather see The Forever War than watching Scott rethreading through this FUBAR'd franchise. I Hope this is good, and I hope it's fucking R.

You are the reason cinema is in the embarrassing state it is today.

By rewarding mediocrity (and often much worse) you ensure there is never any incentive for Hollywood to better itself.

I'd be much more encouraged by 100 GAF members saying they weren't going to see the next Alien film, than I would knowing that Ridley Scott was making it.

So you've already made one personal insult and then made an assumption about my preference in movies. Captain of the Debate team right here folks.

If this were anyone but a proven director I'd be more hesitant to welcoming it with open arms.

Or you could calm down and wait until something gets released before making up your mind.
So what do you watch? Art house films? Do you wait until the Academy Awards until you decide to watch certain films? People wanting to see a new Alien film is hardly the reason that cinema is in a sad state. I'd rather sit through a ton of bad Alien films than sit through shitty post-processed 3D films.

Well, he says it's going to be "really nasty" so.... definitely R.

I think Alien is the best film in the series, so I'm quite keen for this.

I'm making assumptions left right and centre about your taste in movies and I bet they're all correct.

This isn't the director of Alien any more than today's Spielberg is the director of Raiders of the Lost Ark or Lucas the director of Star Wars.

Today's Ridley Scott is the director of Robin Hood and producer of Monopoly: The Movie.

But just you wait and see, you'll get the movie your mindless optimism deserves.

Piss off then. Don't watch it, oh great savior.
