RIM announces BlackBerry OS 10

Much like recent efforts from Blackberry, this looks like too little, too late. The keyboard is the only thing that caught my eye, and even still looks like it may be finicky to use. Let's hope this isn't another Torch.

It is funny to think that his source has any objectivity.

Did you read the article? They simply state it's not RIM's tech. They partnered with a Swedish company that has demo'd the same camera features on Android in the past. Unless RIM bought the company in question, I doubt it will remain exclusive to Blackberry OS 10.

So.... Why the lol? They brought in a lot of other developers and showed other upcoming apps that will be cross platform too. I fail to see the humor in getting other developers on board.

I assume his 'lol' was cause RIM--and many blogs--touted it as a killer feature for the new OS, yet it's potentially not an exclusive one.

In short, he's "lol-ing" at RIM's expense.

iphone is for cool people
android is for poor people
blackberry is for corporate people

this will always be the case.

EDIT: actually, looking at that BB10 video, that shit is impressive.

But poor people are getting free iPhone 3GS', Android people are having sex on first dates, and corporations are ditching Blackberry left and right

They didn't bring them on board to showcase their app or talent for the platform. They licensed their tech to fluff up the OS and it's not even exclusive.

It's basically payola. (The tech is really cool though)

I could understand the 'lol' and the patronizing tone of that website if BB10 depended a lot on the exclusivity of that feature. Obviously they're going to promote something like that as if it's unique, particularly when it hasn't yet been announced for other platforms. That's how marketing/branding works.

More importantly, am I the only one who has a problem with camera technology creating a moment that never existed? Somehow fake smiles and non-candid moments got even more divorced from reality. *shudder

Photoshop has existed for more than 20 years and you're bringing this up now?

Why is everyone in here so salty?

Touching up photos is, in my opinion, quite a bit different from this.

It looks so stale and uninspired.

Very cute of them to try, but this isn't going anywhere.

You don't think "we might have something that is almost in line with iOS 5.0 and Android 4.0 minus all the apps but hey it might have BBM so you can keep talking to your 3 friends who still use Bolds" is compelling?

The hate in this thread is ridiculous. As is saying RIM will be "out of business" in a year.

Blackberries are still the phone of choice overseas in MANY countries with limited mobile bandwidth ... India comes to mind as does the Middle East. RIM cakes off it's Enterprise Business worldwide ... even in North America. I mean when you start at a corporation what's the first thing they give you? A Blackberry nine times out of ten (although this is slowly changing).

As a PlayBook owner I love QNX and 2.0 fixed alot of major issues ... fantastic interface and completely intuitive to use. So glad they are using it as a launch point for their new mobile OS. I'm very interested to see what RIM does in the next year or so ... if they can introduce at least somewhat competitive touch phone they may not win back the consumer market but they certainly stand a chance at retaining corporations that are already completely tied into RIM's Enterprise solutions.

I have an iPhone myself and an iPad but I'm so glad I picked up my PlayBook for 2 bills. From a hardware perspective it's better than Kindle Fire, and the thing is a beast when it comes to multitasking. Will definately be looking at Blackberry 10 equipped phones if the hardware is sexy enough. One benefit of RIM is that it offers the same controlled environment Apple products offer ... I won't go Android due to market fragmentation, so RIM is a good alternative.

What is important is that it’ll run the same OS as the PlayBook once BlackBerry 10 arrives, and that the screen will feature the same 1280×768 resolution, too. That’s a whopping 355PPI, and substantially better than the 720P displays on many of today’s smartphones.

Nice!

…the playbook is 1024x600.

No, it's quickly changing. I have friends in IT at many Fortune 1000 companies, and it's been a mass exodus over the past year. It's an iPhone world out there. Even at my state government, they are flushing RIM this year and going iPhone.

RIM = dead company walking.

Yep, it's a mass exodus in the business world.

Great evidence you have provided us with.

I feel really bad for all the kids that went to the university of waterloo a few years ago hoping to land a secure job at RIM. It's a good thing that Waterloo is actually a really good university.

My niece goes there. Her boyfriend did get a job at RIM.

Or people who've had to carry a Blackberry. Nothing makes most people anti-RIM faster than using one of their products.

I owned 2 BBs and yeah, they weren't the greatest, but they weren't terrible either. I loved the physical keyboards and they were pretty reliable. (Well, for me, at least.)

The majority of people I always see hating on Rim and blackberry are apple fanboys, Blackberry's are still good phones especially like the 9900.

It's not for everyone but I will be interested to see what OS 10 does when it's released.

BB will not be dead within a year like everyone else says corporate execs will still use them and a lot of individuals still use them for BBM alone*

*Never understood why this has taken off whereas a whole mirad of IM clients which run on all kinds of platforms failed but along comes BBM and whatsapp and they manage some kind of success

I think it's in part because RIM was first out the gate with a chat client ... and one you could be guaranteed everybody else in the office would be using.

I just don't understand what developers are supposed to do with it if there's no wifi, can't make calls, and isn't even representative of what BlackBerry 10 is purported to be. I'm half-expecting to hear that it can't execute compiled code or something.

use is as a coaster to put their drink on while they are working on iOS/Android apps?
