Rime PC performance thread

System requirements:
rimesysreqsj4ujo.jpg

Latest drivers: (as at 21/12/2017)
Nvidia: 388.71
AMD: 17.12.2
Intel: Depends on your processor; download the driver update utility

Benchmarks:
GameGPU (Russian; launch build)

Tips and tricks:
Cap the framerate/potentially improve frametimes: Download RivaTuner Statistics Server, input your desired framerate limit in the "Framerate limit" box, and hit enter (the program comes bundled with MSI Afterburner and earlier versions of EVGA PrecisionX). Alternatively, those with an Nvidia GPU have the option of Nvidia Inspector, which can also be used to impose a framerate cap, either in a similar manner to RTSS or by way of forcing a different vsync interval (click the small tool icon to open the game profile section).
Note: Useful if you your system can't maintain, say, 60fps and you're sensitive to the wild fluctuations, or you're experiencing uneven frametimes. The greater window the engine has to render a given frame, if you're imposing a lower framerate than the game can otherwise provide, may also help in alleviating stuttering related to data streaming.
Stop the game from crashing after 15 minutes on touch-capable systems running Windows 10: Open the task manager, switch to the Services tab and disable TabletInputService.
Improve performance when using the Ultra preset: Use FXAA or TXAA in lieu of SSAA. SSAA is supersampling and demands significantly more of your GPU.
Enable SLI support: Using Nvidia Inspector, open the game's driver profile (click the tool icon and select the game from the drop-down list) and set "SLI compatibility bits (DX10 + DX11)" to 0x080010F5. The bits may introduce some texture flickering, and scaling will be at the low end. (Credit to n00b4uM @ Steam Community via Neo_Barrad.)
Improve performance in general: Use ReASON to disable the more demanding water shaders. (Credit to Kaldaien @ GitLab via KainXVIII.)

I posted about this in the another thread:

Not getting great framerates at 1440p + no AA. It's not unplayable or anything but I dip to ~40 FPS in areas with a decent amount of stuff onscreen. Feels like the framerate should be higher with last gen's Titan X. I guess I can try lowering shadow resolution or something.

Try experimenting with screen-space reflections, too. They have a noticeable effect on the framerate in Prey17 -- 20~30%, depending on the situation/your GPU.

Not looking good. Would get the PS4 Pro version if they patched in a 30fps lock. I'd settle for 1080p 60fps on my 1070.

How big is the download?

I'm shocked how poorly this port runs and yes I did enable TXAA instead of SSAA. With its graphics, you'd think a 1080 TI could handle 4k 60 FPS.

A reviewer in the review threat mentioned that 1080p and locked 60 FPS is pretty much impossible even when disabling graphics settings on core i7 3770k and GTX 1070. It's a shitty port, but at least it runs?

This port is seriously disappointing. I tried it for 15 minutes last night, fiddled around with it to try and get smooth framerates but to no avail. Framerate was bouncing all over the place from 60 down to 40, back up to 60, stutter here, stutter there.

The strangest thing is even when I tried limiting the game to 30fps using the in-game setting it would then bounce from 30 down to 24fps, back up to 30. I really don't understand what's going on with it.

I'm giving them a couple of days to make a statement of some sort to acknowledge the problem and say what they are going to do to fix it. If not I'm refunding and won't rebuy until it's deeply discounted.

I just don't have time to deal with this shit in my spare time anymore. I have a huge project on at the moment for my business, my gaming time is limited enough as it is. PC gaming doesn't need to be like this, on the whole I have great experienciences with most games but there are a handful of Devs who insist on fucking shit up.

Really interested in this game, but I'm going to have to wait until they sort out the performance issues.

Disappointing. :(

Between this and PS4 Pro version being meh, looks like this game is a certified Wait For Steam Sale.

Shame as it looked pretty good.

Decided to try the game out despite the worrying news and yep it's just as bad as people are saying.

970
3570k 4.4ghz
16gb ram
ssd

The game started off at 60 with annoying stutter when panning the camera. Get to the first check point and the framerate just tanks to 30(super weird, shouldn't half itself with triple buffering.) Move a few steps down and it's back up to 60, pan the camera and back to 30 with stutter.

Graphic settings don't seem to make a difference in performance either other than SSAA.

Checked on steam and the devs are saying try turning off AA and vsync to "fix" the problems. Well, already tried that when I was fiddling around with it last night.

I'm out, refunding.

Can anyone recommend me a nice relaxing game that will contrast the experience of dark souls 3?

ABZU? I'm pretty disappointed reading these impressions. I was about to pick it up assuming it would have a solid PC version but it doesn't seem like I'm going to get what I wanted out of it. Shame

Already played that, got it during the last steam sale. Looking for something released this year as truth being told I haven't bought much this year other than Prey, Nier, Nioh and Horizon.

This is my last day off before I go balls deep into work for probably the next month.

What Remains of Edith Finch is excellent but a little bit somber. It's around two hours and full of creative ideas.

I would say The Witness, but the puzzles might be too stressful depending on your personality.

Does the game occasionally switch to desktop for anyone else? It's like the game is alt tabbing for some reason.

I don't know what to tell you guys, I'm getting 60-100+ averaging 75FPS just fine on a 6700k/1080 Ti at 3440x1440, everything maxed except AA which is TXAA. A lot of the drastically bad reports are certainly from people blindly choosing SSAA, that really shouldn't be the default on any of the presets or it should be clearly written there the massive impact it has.

Now, 60-100+ is still a rather large range for framerates to fall in so I'm not saying there's no issue going on here, and the game is definitely more complex visually than people are giving it credit for. For reference on The Witcher 3 all maxed except for Hairworks which I keep turned off I get around 85 FPS with a much smaller range of variation, so my average of 75 in Rime isn't too far below that. The problem is really how in Rime it can dip so much lower than the average. At least for me it stays above 60 FPS though so I don't often notice those dips.

Game is really, really beautiful imo.
But it looks like it's just not well optimized for PC (and consoles too). I guess they just needed little more time and more effort. I hope they improve the performance.

refunded the game.

It simply doesn't run well enough for my liking.

I have a Titan X Pascal and a 6700K oc'd to 4.5Ghz.

If I want to maintain 60 fps, I have to drop to 1080p, and no, I'm not using SSAA. (I think it's dumb that they set that as the default for ultra settings, considering how taxing it is).

It'll hit 60 fps at 4k until I go into an area with alot of grass, then it'll drop down to the 30s (even with double-buffered v-sync turned off)

To my eyes, the game just doesn't look good enough to justify the kind of performance it has.

I've just reached what I would call the second area with windmills but performance during the first section was just sub-standard IMO, at one point dropping right down to 23 fps (on a GTX 1080 Ti running at 2,000 MHz!!!) and regularly dipping down as low as 42 fps on a frequent basis. Yet both GPU and CPU usage stayed well below 100% suggesting there is either an issue with the engine and/or the graphics driver.

This is further proven by the fact that I STILL get framerate dips below 60 fps even if I (a) lower all the settings to Low and turn off Motion Blur, DOF, AA, etc; and (b) if I keep maximum settings but set the resolution scaling to 50% (so the game is being rendered at 1280x720).

The game definitely needs a patch or three and possibly driver optimisation in my view.

P.S. The game is absolutely beautiful and I'm really enjoying it. It's a crying shame that the performance is so erratic because, while not game ruining by any means, it is constantly distracting. It really should not be happening IMO on a system such as mine.

P.P.S. The game at least runs better than the atrocious ARK: Survival Evolved, also an Unreal Engine 4 title which has been patched/updated literally hundreds of times since launch but still manages to run like utter garbage on my PC. It's why I decided to uninstall it and free 70 GB (!?) of hard drive space in the process. Good riddance. If a developer can't be arsed to optimise their game properly then I cannot be arsed to play it!

PC Specs by the way are: Intel i7-4770K @ 4.0 GHz, 16 GB, EVGA GTX 1080 Ti SC2, Windows 10 Pro v1703. In-game settings were maxed out at 2560x1440 with TXAA.

In 4k How's it running on a 1080ti

Reminds me of the NieR apologists in that performance thread. I remember seeing quite a few posters saying you shouldn't be using AA with a 1080 lol

Just finished the game, ran pretty well for me the whole way (though not as well as it should), minimal stuttering, guess I got lucky. 1080ti/4790k@4.5/16gb/SSD generally averaged 80-90 outdoors, 100-120 indoors at 1440p max settings txaa, gsync monitor.

Just bought the game today, had my OSD on for a bit, mostly at 60, sometimes as low as 53 in very specific areas. Decided to turn the OSD off and I've mostly managed to ignore (or at the very least not be bothered too much by) the stutter. Definitely needs some optimization though.

6700k stock
1080
16 GB ram
1440p with FXAA, Screen Space Reflections on high.

It's quite a lovely game really, good enough and chill enough that performance issues bother me a little less.

E: is denuvo known to cause BSODs? I just got one, my only new program is Rime, and it's not an error associated with any one particular driver according to WhoCrashed.

Nope. If the issue also crops up in other games, it could be RAM-related (use the aptly-named Memtest to check for errors).

Sorry, should've added that it didn't occur ingame but about 30 mins after I stopped playing. But thanks :)

Ah. Definitely wasn't Denuvo's doing, then. All it does is have the game "phone home" to authenticate your system and obfuscate the code of the executable; it doesn't modify your system in any way, unlike, say, TAGES.

This game hammers my CPU, 80-90% utilization when turning the camera.

Still, I accept it as this is a very beautiful game.

So, an addendum to my performance report. I realize the the reason it's so smooth for me is really down to Gsync, I was messing with Gsync and realized that when it's disabled due to another application running that I specified not to use Gsync Rime is a bit of a mess for me. For one, the in-game Vsync just... Didn't seem to work, at all. Because of that when full screen I'll get over 100 FPS in places which makes everything very jittery (monitor's refresh rate is 100hz), and even in places where FPS is lower than that there's noticeable stuttering. Using borderless window allows Windows' default triple buffering to work and thus cap FPS at 100, but there's VERY bad screen tearing then.

But, when Gsync is working the in game triple buffering does work and I get more or less smooth performance. I did notice a few spots of stuttering, and occasionally the game will just freeze for a moment dropping down to single digit FPS but that happens very rarely. I did also run into one crash when playing earlier though. Still, my new X34 and 1080 Ti are really being put through the paces with this game.

Mine runs at 60 (set it to 60 in the advanced menu). Playing at 1440p on my 4k tv. Played for 2 hours and it's been superb.

1080ti
i7 6700k
16gb ram

All settings on max using TXAA and triple buffer

Has anyone else had the game crash on them in certain spots?

So far it crashed twice on me when I was in the same spot:

By the red tree in the first island
with the same error message about D3D device lost or something to that effect. Hasn't happened anywhere else in the game so far.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
Rime's lead producer has said the following about performance problems on the PC:

While Bradley believes only a small fraction of users have experienced problems with the game, the studio has identified some problem areas based on feedback. In particular, AMD RX 580 cards "appear to be having trouble in general", while GTX 1080 cards are "having problems with SSAA anti-aliasing".

"We've also had users report that switching the VSync setting to Double Buffering significantly boosted performance, especially on 900 series Nvidia cards," Bradley continued. The studio is working towards resolving all of these issues.

When I tried playing the game on my PC with an 8 core Intel Core i7 and a GTX 1080 I had horrendous performance on max setting in 4K: 7-8 frames per second. I got a sold 30fps with anti aliasing turned off, but it's disappointing considering the PS4 Pro can run the game in 4K at about 40-50 fps.

and the performance is SO bad!

Also weirdly enough the Windows taskbar wasn't showing up in borderless mode yesterday, but today it was :/

Hey everyone,

Sorry I have not chimed in here in a few days. We're currently hunting down what is happening with performance issues with RiME. I'd like to put an all call out here for you guys! We're getting people saying they are having issues but not enough hard data to work from. If you're interested in helping us get to the bottom of this, would you mind sending your DXDiag into our support team? http://support.greybox.com. Just include a short description of the performance issues you're facing!

Tears of Nintendo

“But the game will be much better without that huge abomination called Denuvo. In Rime that ugly creature went out of control – how do you like three fucking hundreds of THOUSANDS calls to “triggers” during initial game launch and savegame loading? Did you wonder why game loading times are so long – here is the answer.

In previous games like Sgw3, Nier, Prey there were only about 1000 “triggers” called, so we have x300 here. Next – 300,000 called “triggers” were just warmup for Denuvo, after 30 minutes of gameplay it became 2 f’ing MILLIONS of called “triggers”. Protection now calls about 10-30 triggers every second during actual gameplay, slowing game down. In previous games like Sgw3, Nier, Prey there were only about 1-2 “triggers” called every several minutes during gameplay, so do the math.”
So basically performance problems was indeed caused by fucking Denuvo. Now, whos gonna dare to tell us that Denuvo is not affecting performance at all!? Huh?!

Does anyone know the amount of SSAA begin applied? 4x , 2x or perhaps 8x cause performance tanks with it on.
