RIP 60Gb PS3 -- Now confirmed by Kaz

And this is the very very clear difference between SCEA and Reeves:

Perhaps reeves just had higher expectations of sales in America? I think we all knew really the supply has to last for months just due to the volume shipped out.

Such a mess today that could have been avoided if SCEA just said yeah hes right from the get go.

So what's the deal? Once the Motorstorm bundle is over, does that mean 80GB PS3 = $599? Or will the price be chopped again to $549 or something else?

Finding a 20 is like finding a needle in a haystack. They haven't been in production for months, and Sony officially discontinued them like four months ago.

You're not getting it. They were being sold on the WEBSITE this past week. Do I have to go dig up the CAG thread about it?

Guess what I wasn't in that conversation so I have no idea what you are talking about.

Also, there is nothing crazy about saying that the 60 GB PS3 dropped in price. Sorry.
It did drop in price. Is that what your analogy was talking about? If so, I apologize. I thought you were trying to paint the 60GB as the Core and the 80GB as a Premium which would have made no sense.

Seems like the disconnect is just that SCEA doesn't want to announce the discontinuance of the 60 for whatever reason.

Has it occurred to either Microsoft or Sony that by them creating multiple SKUs, they are not only making it confusing for the everyday consumer but also hard for the potential ones to trust that their new game console won't be rendered slightly inferior by a newer model next year?

Why did Sony even go this route with MS to begin with?

Like I told a gaming friend of mine, I still say that Sony fell foul of Microsoft's antics and now Sony have been duped into playing the 'anything you can do, I can do better (or worse)' game with Microsoft.

watch the kaz interview...once the 60GB is gone, the 80GB will be the only sku at $599

Reeves said the end of this month (i.e. within 2 weeks), when in reality (and according to SCEA), it probably will be towards the end of the year. Two very different scenarios.

Or that they knew having a $599 system wouldn't sell next to a comparable one that is 200 dollars less so they cut some stuff to try and get the price closer to the competition.

Well it took them till when, April, to announce the discontinuance of the 20GB even though they hadn't shipped any in a loooong time.

"[We do not] have a 2 SKU strategy in the US, we learned very quickly customers respond better to having one SKU than two. We dropped the price on the 60GB model, as you know that model is no longer in production, once it's no longer on store shelves it will just be the $600 SKU," said Hirai.

Ok. So this means Sony will have a 80gig @ 499$ later this year. When the limited Motorstorm edition will phase out, they will either make another new bundle or they will simply sell the 80gig alone for less than 599$. This is the only thing that is actually making business sense if they remove the 60gig SKU really.

Yeah, I can see it both ways as to whether you'd want to make an official announcement.

For several months to come? Sounds like they can't spill the beans on any future price drops on the 80gb PS3 for fear stranding the 60gb PS3s on store shelves and warehouses.

I'm sure we would all like definitive clarification on what will happen after the 60gb PS3s are gone but that would probably have a catastrophic effect on sales of PS3s in the retail channel.
Leave it to David Reeves to screw everything up.

It's about time Sony for once stopped the PR battle on this and told us the truth. I seriously applaud them for doing this.

80GB PS3 with no Motorstorm for $600 is kind of hard to swallow after the announcement of a price drop. I hope in a few months when the 60GB model is gone they can put something together again or price drop it, but that's probably wishful thinking.

Once more since I have skipped the entire thread since near the very beginning :p

It's fairly obvious what SCEA is up to here. They're going to sell through the remaining inventory of 60GB at $499 until stock becomes low in the next few months. Once that happens, the 80GB bundle goes away and the 80GB PS3 becomes the only model available at $499. With Shockaxis? Probably.

Unless they want to make a profit, yes.

Why do people seem to think they wont UNBUNDLE Motorstorm and bring the 80GB down to $499 when 60GB stock is depleted? There is no other logical reason they would have put Motorstorm in in the first place if that wasn't their plan.

I don't believe they will do that. And I love my PS3.

Yeah that part is very true they could have said yeah once the 60s are gone they are gone. I could honestly see the 60GB lasting through the holidays. Then in march cut the 80GB to 499.

This seems to no longer be "officially" accurate:

"The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted. We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won't be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated."

So, no one knows anymore.

I assume there will be a way for them to know like the moment the last 60g is sold (some kind of retail tracker?) so they can announce what's next. Otherwise there might be a brief period where the $599 80g is the only SKU available.

HMMMM NOW WHAT COULD THAT MEAN??

Sorry MassiveAttack but that makes too much sense. Meaning that Sony won't do it.

Well that's very good to hear if it's true. I hope it is for the sake of Sony since I'm a PS3-only owner. Honestly, I do have faith in this because I just can't seriously believe that they would sell a single PS3 SKU for $600 again, but with only 20 extra gigs and nothing else(once the MS bundle runs out) to add further value when compared to the last SKU. Hopefully they follow through with another price drop.

That's the thing. David Reeves screwed the pooch by opening his mouth. Otherwise, when the 60GB sold out they would simply announce the 80GB with no pack-in at $499 and probably a 120GB at $599. There's no way they are going to go against a price dropped 360 with a sole $599 SKU. They can't comment on future price drops because people would hold out for that extra 20GB alone.

Getting the 60GB today is not a bad idea, being you'll get the hardware EE.

sounds like SCEE dropped the ball and let the cat out of the bag early. I'm assuming once the 60GB is sold through, the 80GB will drop to 550 or 499 around November (or 2008 when MGS4 drops).

Bundle or no bundle I can't decide, but I think this was their way of eliminating the EE+GS compatibility in the US market. They had to do it sometime, I think they chose now.

Unfortunately, this stuff happens ALL the time behind the scenes at many corps. The only real issue here is that execs spilled the beans too soon, thus causing temporary panic.

This thread totally exploded... LOL I think it was mentioned earlier but I’m still not sure I understand something.

Please correct me if I’m wrong…The current PS3s (60GB) that are our there now (I’m sure flying off the shelves at this very moment:D ) have hardware emulation for both PS1 & PS2? And this new 80GB version will only have software emu? If that is the case, then which is better to have? (I always though hardware was better)

Also, how is this going to effect the firmware update?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...

FUCK YOU SONY! I don't WANT 20 more gigs for another hundred dollars. RAAAAAAAAAWWW!!!!

Hardware Emulation is at near 100%. Software emulation is at 88% or so. With software emulation, they can scale the games to make it look somewhat better.

No. It's the only thing that make sense. They wouldn't really profit my keeping the 60gig SKU and would need to lower it even more if they unbundle (does that word exist?) the 80gig model. I'm looking to understand a real reason as of why removing the 499 60gig --- it's obviously because it will be replaced later.
I think they will go "lone 80gig" and another new bundle for Christmas replacing the Motorstorm. I really doubt a PS3 alone will ever cost 599$ again. If that was the case, the Motorstorm bundle would probably cost more than 599$ right now.

One thing I'm confused about. If after the 60's are gone, and they supposedly release an unbundled 80 gig at $500, what will happen to the current 80 gig $600 bundle?

Wouldn't they have to clear those out too? Or drop that to $550? (or $530?)

This whole thing is giving me a headache.

Oh and BTW Reeves was so drunk today that not only he revaled SCEA's business strategy but he also spilled that next month at Games Convention they will announce the ShockAxis and new PSP services:lol :lol :lol
