Rising Thunder - new PC, UE4, Free-to-Play fighter from Seth Killian

Really loving this game, connection has been great so far and playing Dauntless is proving to be fun. Only had 1 guy quit on me and he changed to Chel when I got matchmade with him again. Luckily I won that match also, really close though.

Is this the complete roster or will there be more characters?

I'd imagine there will be many more, and added constantly.

On that subject, what are this game's F2P hooks going to be? I'd imagine there will be boosts and such to level characters faster, and unlock new moves. It would be cool if characters were free but not everyone is Valve.

I think some degree of customization would be cool outside of just full skins. They're robots after all. I would honestly like Dauntless a lot better if it didn't look so goofy.

chel is OP? Ive done nothing but lose with her

Chel isn't OP, people just don't understand how to play against her. People always think fire ball spamming is OP in any fighting game but that's not even how your play characters like her or Ryu or whatever game properly.

It's not how you play them properly, but always works against people that don't know how to deal with it. ^^

In the interviews following the announcement they said they want to follow the DOTA2 model. So all characters and gameplay related features are free, cosmetics cost money.

womp womp

Good. What a terrible player. It's not even that he's bad or something, it's just his personality. Getting salty is humorous to me, but good lord if you take things like that it can't be good for your health. The amount of salt is surreal. Accept your faults and learn from them, don't just blame other people.

So I may just be dumb but how does kinetic advance work? I can't seem to do it right. Any YT videos explaining the mechanic? I've only played for an hour.

Exactly

Exactly

First off make sure it's actually selected in your loadout - you can have either advance or deflect, and deflect is the default.

All you do is dash after doing any move, it eats one bar of your kinetic meter (blue one at the bottom) and lets you cancel into something else while reducing cooldowns. In street fighter terms, it's FADC without the focus attack. You can also jump after a move instead of dashing, which I'm sure is useful for somebody.

One must fall 2097 was one of my favorite games of all time... The single player was the best in a fighter up to that point in time and funnily enough hasn't been replicated since.

Back on topic tho rising thunder looks great if it's f2p I'll definitely give it a shot. Is it going to be on steam?

Feels like they've got a hit here. Just hope they get the micro-transaction model right where they're actually making money without forcing players to pay, and also enough new player help that they don't get pushed away after losing to more knowledgeable players.

The DOTA2 model is obviously successful but it's not something you can just emulate and get money from. You can have a popular F2P game and people just not spending money on it. Each robot having a nationality (in a different way than the stereotypes used in SF) is pretty clever however and could make a bond between the player and their character to the point of wanting cosmetics.

Ohhhhh! It's done as a cancel. Honestly didn't know that, thought it was just when you have enough kinetic meter and then you dash it would do a kinetic advance. That makes sense. I want to not be working right now so I can play, haha.

A lot of robots can auto cancel into a jump by holding Up (in any direction) while doing a special, which also counts as kinetic advance.

Just played for over an hour today, had a lot of fun with Chel, won a bunch of matches after a while, but there were a lot of dropped matches, like 8 out of 10. Didn't realize Chel was OP or anything, but I didn't spam the fireball at all, I even forget that there are special buttons. I'm getting used to the game and am really a casual fighting player, so I've been mostly using the normal attacks. Chel has a pretty good range on her forward+mid kick, so I'm mostly trying to keep the distance and do damage in short 3-4 hit combos. I mean, that aggressive push seems to turtle up most players I've encountered, but the people that really know how to play punish that pretty frequently.

Fun game, can't remember the last time I had an almost two hour fighting game session.

Think I've maxed Edge's combos now. Have a bnb for both his ground game and off of his dp. Also just figured out he can cancel his front throw into super. None of it helped me against a Talos with 250 ping though; if you think Crow sucks you haven't seen anything yet.

All of you playing online and I'm sitting here with router problems that are making my "buh, I opened that port and other ones as well..." while still not allowing me to connect.

FINALLY GOT MY KEY!!!

How long is the Alpha ? I made an account yesterday, any chance I could be playing this soon ?

I don't think it's a limited time thing. The game is for all intents and purposes "live".

I believe Seth said in an interview that he expects the alpha phase to last 6 months or so, then when it hits beta the cash shop will go live.

Any indication of what type of cosmetic stuff they're gonna peddle?

Hatssssss.

You get a hat and you get a hat and you get a hat and you and you

My guess is: Paintjobs, attachable cosmetics, alt particles, alt art, UI skins

Seth Killian said:
Rising Thunder will be free-to-play, also like many of the biggest competitive PC games, but Killian asks if there’s another word—”you know, the good free-to-play”—because the upcoming technical alpha won’t launch with a store at all, and he says the future is all about cosmetic items.

“If you make a fun game, people will play it, and then there will be a business you can build around that selling hats and whatnot,” says Killian. “These are big robots, so I don’t know if hats are necessarily the right direction, but we want our business to be cosmetics, and if that doesn’t work it’s because our game’s not that fun, and we deserve to not win.”

I doubt they'd be able to pull off any kind of actual licensing but the sky's the limit on, shall we say, mecha 'inspired' designs for cosmetic stuff.

I really couldn't play this game because I only have 6 buttons on my stick. If they add in short cuts for a super and throw I will give it a try again. Also, that salt video is incredible.

If you're having trouble with JoyToKey in Windows 10, make sure you run both JoyToKey and Rising Thunder as Admin. Just found that tip on Twitter.

Have any of the doubters that posted on the previous pages of this thread tried this game? I'm wondering if the game is exactly what you expected, or a pleasant surprise.

For the record I haven't tried the game, and I'm on the fence regarding the vision of the creators, in terms of removing some of the barriers to entry in the gameplay.

I have my invite, my opinion on cooldowns have not changed a bit.

If anything this game is a great advertisement for GGPO3. Best fighting game connection I've ever had. Still screwy matches here and there, but even those aren't that bad.

Throw is also Light+Medium.

Could've sworn I tried that - can't check again until I get home.

It is really impressive. I've had some horribly laggy opponents and the game still felt playable.

If they make the cosmetics really "in-your-face" the jealousy factor could do great work here, given the blandness of the gui and some of the bots this could really work well.

I do wonder if they'll adopt Valve's loot and key systems though.

It'd be funny if the mechs are so bland-looking because of the plan to sell cosmetic stuff.

I think this is just "It's in Alpha™". UI is usually the last thing to get cleaned up in F2P games, and it happens over months and months.

They could even do cosmetic specials. Don't change the properties of the actual special but give it new effects etc.

Maybe their effectiveness is compounded by the fact that I play Vlad, but I found the only way to gain any ground is to actually back way up out of range and jump once I've confirmed a fireball (And then hope they somehow decided not to throw anymore fireballs). This is made very difficult by the reason I listed above, with Proximity Block having a ludicrous amount of range. Vlad's Rocket cooldown is reduced on FA, but trading with a regular Chel fireball merely nullifies the fireball and doesn't get Vlad in (While Chel has still consumed no meter).

I haven't gotten to play that much, so I didn't get to play too many skilled Chel's,but did you know that Vlad's c.M goes under fireballs? Timing's a little strict though but I certainly think it could help. Also neutral jumps with occasional flight in my experience also work.

Edit: Not to mention that hitting flight for just a frame as early in your jump as possible essentially gives you a short jump, sort of like Deejay's j.d+lk

Yeah sliding under fireballs is basically the only safe way for Vlad to advance and the timing is so strict against the slow fireball that it's hardly worth it. Early hover is good when she doesn't have meter (or if she's using burst for some reason) but fireball jc fireball stops that too.

Her 2nd DP hits behind her and catches Vlad at any height but max flight, and if you're that high you don't land in time to punish it. Can't walk in, can't contest her normals without jumping, ground dash is garbage, can't anti-air her without guessing, and once you get in you still have to worry about her DP resetting the situation and forcing you to start over.

I'm liking Vlad a lot against everyone else but boy is Chel not a fun matchup right now.
