Rob Fahey "What is happening at Konami?"

Yeah, given that the Silent Hill creator went on to make Siren, having him go back to Silent Hill seems a bit backwards (as good as Silent Hill was, I still think Siren is the better horror series). And in any case, he seems to be having more fun with Gravity Rush anyway.

Has there ever been an instance of companies selling off their IPs when they weren't on the brink of bankruptcy? At best, you might see them license them out to another company on a game by game basis.

They wouldn't sell off their IPs when they could in theory demand an arm and a leg in licensing fees to some developer, spend no effort or money on developing or supporting the new title, then pocket most of the profits.

No way to the first one. It's got similarities but it's far, far from "a perfect successor."

And a big "hell no" to the second one. I don't even know what to say to that.

I'm willing to concede that LoS might be a better CV than BB, but in no way are its sequels worthy of the franchise name. Also, the last (and only, BTW) CV to beat BB on metacritic is none other than SotN, so take that with a huge pile of salt.

Also, please name me the last Silent Hill that was even close to BB in quality. Sadly, not a single game in the series, even the great SH2, beats BB on metacritic, so I'd have to say the data's against you there as well.

Thanks for playing, though!

I'd rather not imagine a FIFA monopoly. Each game would basically just be a roster update... I mean even more so than now.

More like, take away features this year, add them back in 5 years and call them "new and innovative"

I guess according to you Fire Emblem Awakening is a better Souls game than Dark Souls 1/2 as well? It has a better Metascore and both are kinda RPG as well afterall.

Well, yeah, I thin it's clear they're consolidating and restructuring the focus of their business, with an aim to more or less move away from making console games. I mean what's the point? All they have left is Metal Gear Solid, and their repeated attempts at reviving PES fail year upon year, despite heavy investment in Fox Engine etc.

It makes sense. Should have been seen coming a mile off.

Just the Metal Gear IP?
Yeah, Sony should get that Silent Hill ip and reform Team Silent + Kojima Pro as part of Studio Japan.
Grab Castlevania while they're there too.

people think of the major IPs like Silent hill, Metal Gear and Castlevania but there's plenty of stuff that is already dead and not coming back. Contra for example

No they Already have Siren, invest in that (an arguably better game in the genre) (and its made by the Silent Hill creator)

It just makes no sense to exit that business 100% when there is fairly easy revenue streams to be had through leveraging their IP and back catalog on modern systems and PC at low risk.

Even if they never invest another dollar into new games development, they could make easy money off older games being re-released on PC and consoles..

At least sell off the ip like contra, castlevania, gradius, etc if its just going to go unused and ignored..

They'll never sell the IPs, they're just an asset to sit on and think about the "potential" of for all of eternity.

Hopefully something can come along and be to MGS or Silent Hill what Bloodborne was to Castlevania.

Sony should buy the Gradius IP and then task it to Treasure.
The Castlevania IP also.

I know you're reading this thread Sony so think about it at least.

Why would Konami sell their stable of IPs when they can just use them for pachinko and mobile games?

It's tragic but it is what it is.

Easy: sell it with a clause that let them use for pachinko or whatever it is that they want it for. Or license ips for traditional gaming use, retaining rights for everything else.

It's a bilateral contract, anything is up for debate between whoever is signing it.

That's what I thought when they bought Hudson, and they still canceled games that were done and were literally weeks away from release like that new Bonk game and that Bomberman game. Konami is just a shit company that has no interest in exploiting their IP's for anything really.

Castlevania is my favorite series. Someone save it. Offer Konami cash. (I wonder how much a franchise like this would theoretically cost).

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Hopefully somebody that cares about video games can grab the Hudson brand and actually do something with it.

It feels like most of the problems Japan in recent generations stems from mismanagement rather than lack of talent. Unwillingness to progress, and pride and stubbornness to a fault. It's sad.

Capcom, Konami, Sega. So many awesome but dead franchises.

Is Konami making money on mobile. If they are, I would get out of the console game too. If your game bombs, you aren't putting the whole company in jeopardy.

It wouldn't be unusual for a company to sell off its IP, but retain rights to use the IP in certain areas (their gambling business).

Exactly. If Konami isn't going to make games with their IPs, then they're leaving money on the table by not licensing them out, or selling them for limited use.

Or he is comparing the numbers of AAA games vs taping in Mobile gaming before the bubble burst, and Gambling machines......as any smart CEO would do. Even though that sucks for us gamers.

Its probably how early Nintendo Fans felt when they stop selling cards, and toys and went into video games.

Nintendo actually still makes cards. They're all over Amazon Japan.

Konami obviously isn't leaving the console market (or at least the Metal Gear market) when they're posting vacancies for a new Metal Gear team.

They do make games, and they presumably profit from them, but the realisation that they no longer rely on them to sustain their business isn't a terribly revelatory one and hasn't been for some time.

I wouldn't put much to any stock in predicting their future actions based on postings for new hires. Even if they hired two dozen employees, I"m sure Konami has protections and clauses written into each contract to terminate positions with minimal notice for anything they seem fit.

I say it's better to sell those IPs at a high price now Konami. If you leave the console market how long can you keep the big names relevant? Mobile games?
