Roberto Orci officially directing next STAR TREK

I liked the last two Star Trek movies and I have never tried watching any of the past movies or tv shows. It just seems to nerdy to me. The new movies made Star Trek cool. I don't mind this choice.
You can make Star Trek cool without making it dumb.

None of the Star Trek films people love to death are primarily "Idea"-focused.

The narrative about Star Trek being brainfood for smart people is kept healthy and alive by a fandom who needs it to be true otherwise they'll have to face the fact they've been devoting decades of their lives to the same dumb genre entertainment the rest of us like with half the effort.

Never liked the films, Star Trek works best when its short and focused. I dislike the tendency to draw out tv shows over several seasons without making a bloody point.

Of course the downside is that when the idea is crap, everything falls apart. That's why there are so many shitty TNG episodes :-)

I'm not sure what you mean by idea focused. But old Star Trek focused on ideas and characters. New Star Trek stabs at characters, but seeing as how it missed the point of the movie it stole from, I'm unable to suggest it has a clue about developing an idea.

'09's main idea was establishing the new timeline, bringing the crew together and establishing the characters again. It did a good job of that, so the backdrop of just another revenge story didn't matter too much. Into Darkness needed to build on this and tell a new story deserving of the new timeline though, and it bungled that completely.

There was a good idea buried in there, Section 31 and the push for a more militarised Starfleet following what had happened in '09, but that all got lost when Khan become the focus.

Khan was apparently Lindelof's doing, at least he is nothing to do with the next one
(so far).

The Director of the Next ‘Star Trek’ Film, Roberto Orci, Is a 9/11 Truther

That's old news - it's why Into Darkness is 9/11 fan fiction.
I had never heard that before, didn't really pay attention to that movie. I just noticed someone on the first page brought that up too. Apparently Orci co-wrote and produced Into Darkness.
9/11 Looms Large Over 'Star Trek Into Darkness'

Yeah, the funny thing is that could have actually worked for Star Trek though. Section 31 and Admiral Robocop made the better villain, and a better driving force for the plot. Some in Starfleet pushing for it to become a military organisation rather than a peaceful one concerned with exploration. It would have actually fitted with the changes the events of '09 caused.

You could have told a pretty decent story with that, and apparently that's what Orci wanted to do. Instead Khan was forced into it and we got another tale of revenge, another of Lindelof's "Ooh, wouldn't that be clever!" ideas.

The last 3 films have all had the same story. Psychopath gets his hands on the most powerful ship in the galaxy, is out for revenge, and blows the crap out of the Enterprise until they manage to defeat him at the last minute. It's getting stale.

They have a whole new timeline to play with, they have to do something new. I think Orci actually understands that, whether he's up to the job is another question entirely though.

Wrath of Khan is a great sci movie, Star Trek or no.

Go watch it.

Okay, I'll give it a shot. Do I need to watch the first film to appreciate this one? I don't know if I want to invest that much time into this old series.

Secondly, is it on netflix? I'm at work so I can't check.

I liked the first movie quite a bit. The second one was good up until the last third when they just did a back knock off of Wrath of Khan.

Hopefully they do something new with the new film rather than knock off one of the old films.

No, the first movie has nothing to do with the second, but the second, third and fourth movies do form an arc, if you end up liking Wrath of Khan.

However, you might want to watch the original series episode "Space Seed", which introduces Khan. It's towards the end of season 1.

Both the movie and the episode are on netflix.

No, the first film is a completely different thing entirely. It bored most people to tears so they went with something totally different next.

Wrath Of Khan is definitely worth watching. It's obviously a bit slower and less OTT than films are these days but it still holds up well. A good story well told.

And this Khan is a much, much better character than what you got in Into Darkness.

No you don't need any prior Star Trek experience for Khan.

As for Netflix, I'm in Canada and I'm pretty sure it's on ours, not sure about other territories though.

However, you might want to watch the original series episode "Space Seed", which introduces Khan. It's towards the end of season 1.

Everything you need to know about Space Seed is explained in the movie, he can skip that too.

A 9/11 truther, somebody with a legitimate mentally unstable view of reality, with no experience in directing whatsoever, who writes one terrible movie after another, got $150+ million dollars to make a new Star Trek film.

I'm gonna assume there were no more qualified person than him, maybe a person of color or a woman perhaps. Maybe?

This is like that self-fulfilling circle where entry level jobs require 2-3 years of experience

In Hollywood you fail upwards. That's always been the case.

Don't forget that it's being written by a Mormon... so much for Star Trek being an ode to science and rationality.

I'm being facetious as I don't think a religious person is unable to write a good Star Trek movie... but nothing about this project is instilling confidence in me so far.
