Robinson the Journey. A stunning PSVR game.

LOL, I was about to say that it is so cool that the tool also looks like a Move and now I am reading the game is not supporting it at launch.

This is my thinking too. Game looks cool, looks more interesting than it did going from that teaser thing aaaaages ago (which is all I've seen up to now) and then seeing shots with the tool looking like a move controller it seems like a cool thing but then nope, gotta wait for the move support. Why even have the tool be a move controller if you can't get it done on time for launch?

Anyway, other than that the game seems cool and definitely one that I'd pick up if I had PSVR. Thought I'd wait for the move stuff before playing it.

Liking the look and style of this game but my god, I'm getting sick playing it. Is it just because I haven't vrd for a bit or is this making others sick?

Guess this is a wait for a sale type of game. A lot of games are falling rapidly into this category for me, a bit disappointing, losing faith that we are actually going to see a killer app anytime soon.

RE7 will probably be the killer app.

I'll be waiting on a sale for this one.

Battlezone is a real killer app for me, absolutely love it and was fortunate enough to grab at £25 too.

I just can't justify buying this game in the UK when out colonial brothers can buy it at half the price. I just can't.

Threw my copy in for a bit while my brother was over earlier hanging out. We were both curious about how the game was so I decided it was time to give it a go.

Starting impression was pretty weird because I had no idea the game had failed to configure me into the right position by itself. The game seems to tell you to hold start to readjust your camera at the beginning because it HAS TO use your first configuration as your positioning. Once I figured that out, I was good to go, but the opening sequence was very awkward because I was placed like 3 feet or so back from where the game had intended me to view things from, and then loading into the main character's base afterward was super confusing because it was just a black screen since the camera was outside of the bounds of the level.

Once I figured that out, quickly found this game to be quite nauseating. My brain seems to handle cockpit scenarios pretty well (with the exception of Rigs) because it seems like I know there's something behind me propelling me forward (EVE spaceship, a car in Driveclub)... But being at the scale of just a regular person, disembodied no less, is super weird for my brain to figure out when I start moving. It didn't get me as sick as Rigs, but I quit before I could feel that miserable.

The scale of stepping out of the main character's base was very cool within VR, though, and the game generally looks nice visually for a PSVR title... But beyond that, I really didn't risk feeling sick, so I turned it off.

Yep feel the same. Actually pretty angry about the pricing over here.

I see they have it for £32.96 on Play-Asia, still feels a bit steep for a 5 hour game.

Agaun... any info about the game localizations??? will be localized at all??? voices and subtittles??? there isn't any info about it out there...

I don't understand vr games and the preoccupation with hands on screen interacting. Can these games not just be bog standard games without having to make gestures and the headset is used only for 360 head movement (looking around etc) and the game controlled by joypad?

Some of the better games imo will be that way. Move centric games imo should have disembodied hands sure, but I shouldn't be the norm.

Seems a title for strong VR legs.

So I think I understand how to do this but have a slightly different angle on it for 2 reasons:-

#1. I don't want to risk trying the Ethernet transfer connection.

This is because I always get the 'LAN NOT CONNECTED' on my ps4 (drives me fucking nuts so I'm forced to use Wi-Fi but as my office/games room has a shitty signal, I don't even bother playing online anymore. Had a recent thought though that I could possibly use my old BT Home Hub 5 as a Bridge or Wi-Fi extension as I have just received their new Smart Hub after lightning destroyed my last spare HH5).

#2. I don't have any spare HDD to back up my original ps4 (I've already replaced it with a 2TB) and I don't want to buy another to back up (would 'just' get away with 1TB if I delete some things/games).

So after reading all info/help, especially by univbee (which I've copy and pasted), I guess the following would work?:-

1. Still keep ps4 for now. Clear/Tidy data so using under 1TB.

2. Buy ps4 Pro.

3. Before turning on ps4 Pro, take out 1TB HDD.

4. Use old HDD Caddy (currently got a 500gb with pictures on). Take out 500gb 'for now' and then put 1TB ps4 Pro HDD into it.

5. Format 1TB ps4 Pro HDD to exFAT via my laptop.

6. Sync all trophies etc and as I don't have a spare HDD to do a Spare Backup, I will use an old USB Stick and Backup Game Saves (just in case it fucks up then at least I have game saves - the PS+ subscription is via my Son's account that is on this machine so I can't back up saves to the cloud).

7. Connect 1TB ps4 Pro HDD to original ps4 and use Backup Option in Settings to create a Full Backup onto this 1TB HDD.

8. De-activate my account as Primary and my Son's account as Primary (he doesn't use this ps4) on this old ps4.

9. Then Initialise this old ps4.

10. Get USB stick and download latest FULL firmware into a PS4/UPDATE folder onto it via my laptop.

11. Put USB stick FULL Firmware of PS4/UPDATE into ps4 Pro before putting HDD in and turning on.

12. Take out 2TB HDD from old ps4 and put into ps4 Pro.

13. Turn on ps4 Pro and update firmware using USB stick, go through initial setup, skip everything until get to dashboard.

14. Take out USB stick and attach 1TB HDD with Full Backup Copy (of original ps4) and then select 'Restore' from the Settings.

15. Once it's done it'll restart; all accounts will be signed out and deactivated but it should otherwise 100% match your prior install. Re-sign into your accounts, set the console as primary (I will do my Son's account AND my account as I have some free updated ps4 games from the ps3 days).

16. Put USB stick FULL Firmware of PS4/UPDATE into original old ps4 before putting 1TB HDD in and turning on.

16. Disconnect 1TB HDD and put back into original old ps4.

17. Turn on original old ps4 and update firmware using USB stick, go through initial setup, skip everything until get to dashboard.

18. Sell original old ps4 (now with 1TB HDD instead of 500gb it came with as I've still got some pictures on this).

19. Put 500gb HDD back into its CADDY.

Thanks again to everyone's input.

How does this sound?

Have I missed anything?

Maybe the right thread? :D

55 quid is fucking ridiculous, no two ways about it. You could fly from London and Paris and back for that and still have money left over for a PSN sale game.

Do NOT buy at EU price, buy PSN credit from amazon, make US PSN account, redeem code, buy game for reduced amount.

I'm not gonna buy it even the US version till there is no clarification about the game localizations. 'cause reading subtitles in VR is a mess on PSVR with lower density of pixels around the edges.

I gave the game 6.8 out of 10 in my review for IGN Italy.
The text is in Italian of course, but this is the quote for Metacritic.

Unfortunately Robinson: The Journey is not the next big thing on the VR scene: despite the premise and the efforts, Crytek was not able to create a convincing blend of a traditional adventure game with a full blown VR experience. In the end, this prehistoric space safari will probably somehow entertain you, without however being as mindblowing and groundbreaking as you might expect. Give it a chance if you dig the idea, but without too many expectations and absolutely not at full price.

If you have questions, feel free to ask. But just for the record, I wanted to title my review "Jurassic Barf". Yeah, it's really that intense, it made me sick twice after playing for one hour straight (but it's not the one and only problem of the whole experience).

I've yet to get sick playing a VR game so I'm not the best judge for this stuff but fwiw Robinson hasn't made me sick yet. My "will you get sick" control is my friend though, she gets sick from all of the major VR culprits.

This one only made her dizzy and not motion sick but then again I was in a tree when she played and she also looked down. Motion sickness never really got to her.

Game is a little meh but I unironically like scanning dinosaurs, if this was non vr i'd give it a hard pass but with the scale + vr It's average, Inoffensive, and your pet is damn cute with a hat so I'd give it a 6/10 based on what I've played so far (and that's using the whole review scale not everything below 8 = trash).

I tend to agree with your review (I scored mine a little bit higher, 7.5), but didn't have relevant motion sickness problems with this game. While with Here They Lie I was forced to take a break every 20 minutes as I really couldn't stand it, I could do a full 3 hours session in Robinson without any problems (keeping the snap rotation setting). I found this amazing.

However, my impressions summary: "7.5 - A satisfying adventure, with a pretty simple story but sporting a gorgeous world and good interaction mechanics, even if with some design and control problems that make a little frustrating going through some sections. Crytek's game real problem, though, is its price, way too high for a 4-5 hours game." My review is in Italian too.

I feel like they could have made it a cockpit game while still retaining the humanity by maybe making the child injured in the crash so that he couldn't walk or needed some assistance to get around. You want to talk about overcoming outstanding adversity, well there ya go. Hell, even just giving him an over-sized dome helmet with some static details to focus on would help reduce motion sickness.

This is exactly why I think RE7 is going to be incredibly rough on people. Some teams are ignoring the early rules of comfortable VR.

Have they already stated if it will be the full game or just a "VR experience" sideloaded to the main game, like GT Sport is doing? I suspect it won't be the full game. Same goes for Ace Combat 7.

MY Review for ACG Rated it a Wait for a Deep Deep Sale or Rent
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PUqqS0earc

Pros
Sometimes looks good
Initial moments and some vistas are cool
Sound is great
Atmosphere at times enjoyable
When you use robot vision that filter and camera angle is amazing looking at times. Like a toyset

Cons
Texture work is spotty at best, horrid in some places at worst
Repetitive to the extreme
Lots of repetitive filler
Movement system just doesn't nail it
Judder or what appears to be Frame timing hits(despite re-projection and tested on 2 systems)didn't ding it for this until I figure that out
Lots of huge swaths of boring

It will be the full game.
And it will be probably rough, I agree with Tetra.
Actually a colleague of mine almost had to puke while playing it at E3.

As for Robinson... I wasn't honestly that intrigued, it's not a bad game but as a huge dino-fan I expected something way better, more immersive and more surprising.
The set pieces with dinosaurs weren't particularly that memorable either.

That right there, been hovering over the buy button cause I love dinosaurs but that's a real buzzkill... such a shame, this could have been a showcase for PSVR, I mean come on! DINOSAURS in VR!! how could it not be great? Sadly, I suspected this is how it would have turned out.

Is there at least a cool t-rex encounter or anything?

Yeah, it's VR and DINOSAURS, as I wrote in my article it's probably the best combo you can possibly think apart from VR and Porn... and yet, it's absolutely not as mindblowing as you'd want it to be, unfortunately.

The last question is definitely a spoiler... so read at your risk!

A very, very brief one at the end, lasting probably less than a minute, with a T-Rex fight against Raptors that closely mimics the one seen in Jurassic Park/World.
And BTW the T-Rex is not 100% accurate: it has four little horns on the back of its head (which honestly look pretty cool) and four fingers.

And, before someone asks... NO FEATHERS (which is absolutely fine to me!)

People are expecting RE7 to be a killer app. The PSVR killer app will be a title exclusive to VR, that's just a fact. No 2D experience with tacked on VR support is going to be the best possible experience on PSVR. It can enhance certain games, like Bound for instance, but the best of VR is always an experience that can only be had in VR.

Would Robinson have benefited from being an extended series of immovable dioramas? Like Batman? If it were built for such a thing and the team were able to spend more time polishing each vignette?

Damn these reviews are disappointing. Was really looking forward to playing this, but I just cancelled my pre-order. I don't do great with motion sickness and the gameplay and visual just don't seem like they're worth the suffering here.

In terms of VR legs, probably yes.
But I think they tried to come up with something else here, kinda reaching for the stars (which is honestly absolutely honorable). Too bad that the result was disappointing, but again, as I said before, motion sickness is not the one and only problem here.

Ah, that's too bad. I admire what they were trying to do and I mourn the fact that it came out less than stellar since it's such a gorgeous game, but early VR is nothing but trial and error. Somebody's gotta be the error.

The "errors" they committed, at least with locomotion, aren't new. People made those errors 3 years ago.

Certainly not. I'm not relinquishing blame. A couple posts ago I spoke on how simple it would have been for them to make it a cockpit game. I think it was foolish and naive of them to try to make this a free motion game without some nearby point of reference. A VR developer should know better.

Or at least figure it out during the development process.
