by BBQ you mean coldplay. I know.

Not really. I grew up in Kansas City and San Francisco has absolutely no clue how to do proper BBQ. Even worse the "best" place in town has terrible, inappropriate sauce and is run by someone who believes that sauce is just a cheap way to cover up inferior meat so he is vehemently anti-sauce. Sorry, but dry smoked meat is just undercooked jerky (delicious, but no sauce, no BBQ). KC BBQ, however, is typically distinguished by the use of sauce and doesn't really mess around much with rubs or mop sauces as much as other styles. It's also one of the few styles where you'll find burnt ends (the fatty parts of pork and beef brisket trimmed off, smoked again, and almost always tossed in sauce) which, personally, are the most delicious bits of BBQ you can get offering some serious challenge even to pork ribs.

Kansas is a mind-destroyingly terrible place to live, but dammit... I really miss good BBQ. For a while I was getting some great burnt end sandwiches every week. Now... well, even when I do get it it usually just makes me realize how much I miss it even more. Even worse there's no way for me to just set up my own smoker so unlike some regional delicacies this is one that's not normally very easily made at home and definitely nigh-impossible in a dense urban area.

your making me hungry. :(

Three weeks, three albums...can we go for a fourth? Can that fourth be Texas Flood?

If they can get it done and out in time I strongly suspect they might do it. On the other hand there weren't any singles announced this week. I think that they might be trying to push out more singles since RB2 is out rather than just packs and albums.

My guess is that yeah, we'll probably get either Texas Flood and some singles or possibly the god-awful No Doubt pack.

You weren't the one who spent the past twenty minutes or so looking at pages of BBQ with pictures of glistening meats knowing that they're two thousand miles away. :(

You're definitely right about Kansas's BBQ Belgand, living in Missouri theres always good options in the BBQ dept. with MO/KS.

Some more thoughts.

I never really appreciated the progressing, audibly and visibly, through a particular city's venues until I was able to play solo with headphones and really notice the differences. Even going from El Ocho to The Snake Pit felt like me and Jack and Kate and Sawyer were really moving up just a little bit. (BTW, Stand-Ins, in a very simple and subtle way, bring Solo World Tour to a whole other level. I look forward to the new site launching so I can show all of you how awesome Kate Darnit Rock!! looks.)

So far all the new songs are a blast to play, even if "Today" is the new "Say It Ain't So" in terms of the game's obsession with throwing it in setlists. Even "E-Pro" which doesn't have a whole lot to offer for the guitar, is so much fun because it's such a dope rhythm and playing it with headphones on, as all the Beck sonic swirliness starts ramping up at the end, is a total blast.

I haven't dipped too much into Solo Challenges yet, but I did peek at the Battle Of The Bands and the set lists are really inspired. (There's one with six songs that all have to do with illness like "Sick Sick Sick" , "The Kill", etc. It's like the mix tapes I used to make.)

Basically, as much as Rock Band seemed custom designed to be awesome to me, Rock Band 2 seems to be custom designeder.

One question: What's the "M" and the four little dudes mean under my band name? I'm assuming it shows how close I am to hitting the Medium Fan Cap?
It stands for difficulty (E, M, H, X) and number of band members. You'll see that next to specific songs/sets you've cleared, too, but under your band name I think it indicates the average difficulty and number of people you're playing with. The stars on that screen work the same way — they're an average.

OH! Makes sense. Thank you!

Yea that would be awesome. On another note I finally gold starred Green Grass on guitar! Woo! Got 440k at that, was an insane run.

Damn you. I just can't do those final solo runs properly. The first 5 minutes of the song I can do fairly well, although I almost always lose my solo at that fast "diddily-did-diddily-did" bit in the verses which brings me down a lot.

I would like to read opinions from you concerning Rock Band 2's Dolby Digital sound, I want to know if it has the same problems as before; you know, poor sound and of-synching...etc etc...RB1 was a lot better in stereo.

I finally have RB2, but if I turn DD on, my home theater setup will reset completely and it would be difficult for me to leave it as perfectly as it is now in stereo. Thank you for your opinions.

And....btw....I LOVE RB2 A LOT, I have unlocked all the songs with drums on expert, only did the last impossible challenge on hard, there is a LOT of cool music, I LOVE Float On with a passion and Livin with a prayer....I can say that about many songs....but I have to say, 99% of the last 12 songs from the impossible challenges, I will NEVER EVER play that songs again, they are almost impossible to enjoy and a waste in this game in my opinion. I remember the last songs of RB1, they were challenging but really fun...I cant say the same here....but anyway, RB2 setlist is a million times better.

Im so happy with this game.

So I beat Painkiller on guitar on my second try, yet I still can't beat GGaHT. Painkiller is actually a fairly simple song, so I have no idea why they placed it as the hardest. Even Peace Sells is harder.

WOW.

I just had a full bore GOTY moment.

I'm playing the 7 Song LA Setlist at The Snake Pit and "Lazy Eye" by Silversun Pickups is the third song, almost smack in the middle, it's my first time playing it. I don't know if it was the specific venue, if they've improved the lighting rigs in the sequel or if it's just because I never played an extended setlist like this RB1, but there's this moment where the solo starts with all blue lighting, which if anyone has seen even the remoteliest shoegazery band play, that's how all bands start a solo like this, and then right when it kicks into the harder phase of the solo, the lights turn red and crowd goes wild and I swear, dude, I felt like a total fucking rock star.

And not the kind of dumb ass leather chewing rock star, I felt like I was on stage with the bands that I actually loved back in the day.

It was fucking epic. And then the set list finished off with "Come Out And Play", which is the dumbest song ever probably but holy fucking shit as the song after Lazy Eye it was so perfect, such a blast, and then Mountain Song, and then Testify.

I had been worried that a seven song setlist would get kind of boring or I'd be itching to play Testify halfway through the fourth song but, wow.

I'm telling you. Solo World Tour changes everything.

Uh okay, YIKES.

Are the disc read issues people were talking about, how does it manifest exactly? Because my 360 just literally spit out the physical disc. Like, the drive just opened and then closed again. That's...probably not the game, right?

Annoyance: When I'm going for scores and the songs have Big Rock Endings, I have to pause the game, switch off my Les Paul and plug in the Strat for maximum points.

Pleasure: I got 20k more on Highway Star. I really could FC it if I could just get that split g-y-b section down.

Yeah, Painkiller isn't bad at all. It only has one hard solo part, but beyond that it's relatively easy to get down. Peace Sells is kind of the same way, but annoyingly it gets tough at like 95%. It took me many tries in RB1 to beat GG&HT on expert, but I beat Painkiller on my first shot.

I love the harder guitar songs in this game - Battery, Painkiller, Peace Sells, and Panic Attack. They're all just a lot of fun to play.

Maybe it's because I haven't seen the challenge yet, but I cannot imagine how that could be the easiest. Entwistle played some amazingly tough bass lines. Then again, it was usually much, much harder on the live songs (and "My Generation" both has that wicked bass solo and they used the live version), but still.

You basically play all tracks from Who's Next that are available. Baba O'Reilly, Going Mobile, Behind Blue Eyes, then Wont Get Fooled Again.

Yes, Entwistle had some wicked bass lines(thats why his stuff is so much fun to play) but considering that they put this challenge in the impossible tier, it really isnt that bad. I think it is in the impossible band tier because as a full band these songs would be a bitch on expert, especially drums. There is also a Who Challenge somewhere that has almost all the who songs available to play.

For me, the solos in Peace Sells aren't that big of a deal provided you have a good crowd rating and some overdrive. What kills me is the riff that comes after the first solo, and it makes building some sort of note streak or overdrive impossible. Then they throw you two solos one after another when you have sore hands and no overdrive to potentially bail you out.

Still a really fun song, though.

edit: I think my problem is my lack of going into training mode and actually practicing some of these solos. I'd probably do a lot better.

Hey, I gold stared that awful Honest Bob song! Yay!

*edit* Oh shit, I gold stared Creep! Fuck you, shitty Pablo Honey Radiohead!

*double edit* Oh shit I gold stared Dead On Arrival; Fuck you, Fall Out Boy and TAJ! Up to 8.7 million now.

Well, it was a fun three hours of playing Rock Band 2. At least they're sending me a brand new 360 expedited. That was the weirdest shit I ever saw. I was playing that Ratt song on Bass and all of a sudden the screen goes black and the disc ejects and then the 360 pops back on it tries to go back in then halfway it goes back out and so on etcetera.

Yeesh.

Luckily, no disc scratching.

hey, guys. I need some help from a US 360 player. I got these 100 free US points from the dream car challenge or how it was called and being from Europe I have a US account on which I put these 100 points. Now I tried to download a song and it seems I´m not able to download them from Europe.

It would be cool if someone would contact me (PM), so I can give him or her my account data to download a song to test out if I´m able to redownload the song from Europe considering I should get another 900 points from the contest and would like to pick up some old tracks.

Well, you know, I did get to have that "Lazy Eye" moment and I played the "Lazy Eye" Battle Of The Bands and it's not actually costing me any money so, you know, it's hard for me to get that pissed off.

I'd see the fact I had a "moment" as motivation for my rage. They're denying you fun with their shitty hardware!

That's sort of Glass Half Empty. I wouldn't have had that moment in the first place without it.

I do a lot now. There is a lot of good bass stuff on there. Anything Rush and Who has good basslines. There are a lot of shitty bass things though, but quite a bit of fun stuff too.

Speaking of which, I am now officially number 2 overall for Bass on My Best Friends Girl and once the board updates number 1 for Real Good Looking Boy. Feels good to actually be at the top for once, especially since I am not playing ALL the time trying to beat scores, and these were my first attempts.

Yay got my 4000 points card from Amazon today. Between BSSM, catching up with last week's DLC and Mega Man 9, it's going to be spent by Wednesday!

One thing about drums I like is that the BBEs only require a handful of well timed hit to maximize the score. I used to wail on the drums like crazy, but all you have to do is hit as close to the beginning and end of the BBE and of course the final notes. No matter what you hit in the middle, you have roughly the same score.

Are any 3rd party guitars up to snuff with the official ones? I am a PS3 only owner and want to get into RB. I am not sure I can afford the big box so I was wondering...

EDIT: Alternatively, am I a fool to not wait for the RB2 hardware?

I might be LTTP here, but has anyone seen the Rock Band ad in the UK, the new Live Your Moment one?

It says Rock Band out now, Rock Band 2 out November. So looks like GH:WT and RB2 could be going head-to-head over here.

Quick rant:

I have ran into a problem. I've been recently taking my hard drive and copy of RB2 over to my cousin's house this past week, everyone stops by and loves playing it (which on a side note, is amusing because they are all very heavy NY puero rican hip hoppers, like stereotypical kind, but they are my family and I love them).

What I don't love, is that can't seem to get anything more than four stars, if that. Three stars is usually what we get (and I can't believe I haven't got my achievement for saving someone three times in a game, I swear I've done it).

My world tour is being ruined, and I refuse to start a new file up because Ive spent so much time on this one already :(

How is it being ruined? Or are you just trying to focus on 5-starring as much as possible?
You could always turn on the no-fail mode when you're there. Game will play as usual, but no progress will be saved. Then you can go home and do your real progress without them.

As a drummer, my play time is limited until either my legs and/or arms give in, so no re-doing.

I guess things aren't completely ruined by the lack of 5 stars... just.. ruining my band's old good name of having five starred almost everything.

I'll go start up a livejournal account to go finish this rant out, it really is just me bitching and moaning because im playing with newbies (at least they are having fun... but at the expense of me being a sad little drummer boy).

AMUSIX can you privde pictures of how you ION set is setup? Because when I get my set on Monday I want it to be set up so it's as close to a traditional drum setup as possible.

I put some up earlier, but I've shifted some things around. I'll take another shot of it tonight. I'm really happy with where the control module went. Safe, not in risk of getting hit by an errant stick, but still very accessible.

Do you have a ride cymbal now?

Yeah! Finally beat Rock Band 1 with drums on medium. Bizarre that the hardest song by far is nowhere near the end of the game - once I'd scraped by Green Grass and High Tides, nothing else was much of a challenge at all. Going back over some of the earlier songs and discovering just how easy they are now before launching into hard properly - although I've beaten the first set of hard songs, some of them I did so badly that I'd be ashamed to start working on the next level.

Also got a cheap real electronic drum kit, and have been sharing my time between playing Rock Band and just bashing away on that. The two help out with each other quite a lot.

Amazing how much I improved.

Last night we decided to play GGAHT. I chose hard drums. 1377 combo. And that's with a beginning-to-fail red pad.

I remember before I felt like I was going to die.

onemic:
This was the image of my layout I put up before...for the most part, what I have now is the same...
IMG_4596.jpg

The biggest difference I have is that the brain is now mounted to the same arm as the snare (red) and the high-hat (yellow cymbal). It sits above and to the left of the arm. I would strongly recommend this. Not only can you see the controls, and they're easily accesssible, but when using a headset, the cord no longer gets in the way.

TAJ said:

Nope, tried moving the crash (green cymbal) over and connecting it as a ride, but it didn't really work for two reasons. First, the cymbals aren't really designed in a way that you can hit their bell (the center bump) which is key to getting a proper bounce on a ride. Second, because the blue cymbal ended up sitting above the blue tom, it felt rather redundant. The tom gives a better bounce to the stick anyway, so it's easier to to those three-hit trills that come up.

I've angled the green tom a bit more since this shot, which allows it to feel more like a crash when I need it to.

Have you tried Enter Sandman on expert? I bet you could beat that no problem. :p
