This is not the same Sony that allowed Gabe Newell on stage to announce Steam for PS3 support on Portal 2 and allowed them to give free PC versions to each player. This will definitely affect what consoles I purchase in the future.

Good point. Also it's making the other versions more populated but I suppose it could be argued the PS4 player base is already large enough so it's not adding too much in Sony or the players interests... it's certainly a more complex situation than the Minecraft one (that's owned by MS).

Yeah but when new multiplatform games come out with such lopsided features Sony can't rely on an established base of players to distract from the issue at hand.

They might get away with it for RL (which they shouldn't) but I no doubt gamers with multiple platforms may use this to help make decisions which platform they'll buy MP games on and likely Sony won't be first...
