Pretty solid list. I dont agree with all his placements, and some of his picks, but its still a good list. 2006 is a HARD year to rank. Personally, its my favorite year in film of the decade so far, and quite handily. Children Of Men, United 93, Pan's Labyrinth, The Departed, Casino Royale, The Fountain, The Prestige, The Lives Of Others, Letters From Iwo Jima, Stranger Than Fiction, Apocalypto, Perfume, Notes On A Scandal, Volver, Rescue Dawn, etc. all in one year.

CoM was far and away the best thing I saw in 2006 though.

Rescue Dawn will definitely be on my 2007 list.

because your opinion is right and Robert Ebert's is wrong. Of course.

Lots of gaffers with good taste are agreeing with him (at least on CoM).

children of men is one of the greatest movies i've ever seen. it's one of those movies that made me ''whoa'' when the credits started rolling. the departed was great also, but scorsese didn't deserve his oscar for it. and contrary to many gaffers, i liked babel, but then again, i'm a sucker for brad pitt.

ot, but my 2007 moty so far is sunshine, but i haven't really seen a lot of movies this year so it's kinda my moty by default, really.

I went in thinking I would hate it because I heard it was like Crash... but I actually kinda liked the movie too. The Japanese night club scene was fantastic.

He's a good writer who loves movies and has interesting things to say. No one's word should be taken as gospel, let alone Ebert's, but he's good at what he does, and people respect that.

These were all good films from last year IMO, not sure how they would fit into a top 10.

Children of Men would probably occupy the top three spots of the top ten scenes from 2006, absolutely top direction but could have done with a better script.

You got it backward, The Departed is (for the most part) an exceptional genre movie, you can't really fault a movie because some people overrate it or read too much into it.

Seriously, you're like in the middle of g-spot of the target audience for this movie.
(although it's a great movie than can and should be enjoyed by everyone, even people who never heard of this book).

and people who actually liked been able to finish Trsitram Shandy, well, much like the 4th dimension, I can understand it exists, but my mind isn't quite capable of imagining what's it looks like.

Tristram Shandy is fun to hear about and read synopses of, but "We're going to read Tristram Shandy!" is a phrase best left to nightmares.

Even today, sometimes I will think, "You know, I am older and I am definitely a bit wiser. Maybe I will appreciate Tristram Shandy now." Then I'll pick up a copy, read a few pages, and decide to not read anything at all for a few months.

It's his most personal film -- so it's a little pretentious because, you know, he's a French art geek. But it's got Bernal who I'll watch in pretty much anything.

A good list overall. The Prestige was my favorite film of last year, and I would also include Casino Royale, Little Children, The Last King of Scotland and the Fountain as favorites.

According to IMDB Haggis had has his grubby paws on the Iwo Jima story at some point; this was somewhat of a shock to me after I saw the film because I had previously been under the impression that he was incapabale of not fucking up a screenplay with his trademark shmaltz.
