Pretty solid list. I dont agree with all his placements, and some of his picks, but its still a good list. 2006 is a HARD year to rank. Personally, its my favorite year in film of the decade so far, and quite handily. Children Of Men, United 93, Pan's Labyrinth, The Departed, Casino Royale, The Fountain, The Prestige, The Lives Of Others, Letters From Iwo Jima, Stranger Than Fiction, Apocalypto, Perfume, Notes On A Scandal, Volver, Rescue Dawn, etc. all in one year.

CoM was far and away the best thing I saw in 2006 though.
Rescue Dawn will definitely be on my 2007 list.

because your opinion is right and Robert Ebert's is wrong. Of course.
Lots of gaffers with good taste are agreeing with him (at least on CoM).

children of men is one of the greatest movies i've ever seen. it's one of those movies that made me ''whoa'' when the credits started rolling. the departed was great also, but scorsese didn't deserve his oscar for it. and contrary to many gaffers, i liked babel, but then again, i'm a sucker for brad pitt.

ot, but my 2007 moty so far is sunshine, but i haven't really seen a lot of movies this year so it's kinda my moty by default, really.

and ebert also said that dh2 > dh3 > dh1. yeah...

edit: i always like reading his reviews, though, even if i don't necessarily agree with him. and he knows a lot about film which is awesome.

Me too! Me too! I wanna go too! Here's my Top 10 list that I made back in January. I didn't get to see all the 2006 movies that I wanted, but oh well. I've done a better job of keeping up with new releases in 2007.

1. Children of Men
2. The Departed
3. Pan's Labyrinth
4. The Prestige
5. Casino Royale
6. V for Vendetta
7. United 93
8. Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest
9. The Fountain
10. Tristam Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story

And my current list for 2007 (having not seen NCFOM yet)
Top Ten Movies of 2007 (so far)
1. Zodiac
2. Tekkonkinkreet
3. King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters
4. Eastern Promises
5. Death at a Funeral
6. Reign Over Me
7. Ratatouille
8. The Hoax
9. The Lives of Others
10. 300

Yeah, I know. 300. Sometimes my inner nerd gets the best of me.

Man, 2007 has been such a shitty year compared to 2006 (and well almost every other year)

Just in case anyone wanted to know. they are...

1 Pan's Labyringth [B[Awesome. Not my favorite, but an understandable pick. Waiting for HD release to watch again[/B]

2 Bubble not seen. Dunno what it is, even

3 Children of Men Awesome. Favorite of last year. One of my favorite contemporary movies

4 The Departed Never seen IA, but The Departed is a pretty lousy Scorsese flick. Aviator is far, far better. Pity Oscars am total

5 The Lives of Others Fuck awesome. One of my favorites of last year

6 United 93 A 7 out of 10. Pity recognition, a la Departed

7 "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters From Iwo Jima" Eh, haven't seen. Probably won't see

8 Perfume: The Story of a Murderer A 7 out of 7, but I am a sucker for a good period flick. I loved this movie more than I had any reason to

9 Babel Zzzzzzzz. I tried to watch this twice. TRIED

10 Man Push Cart. didn't see, dunno what it is

I didn't like Pan's Labyrinth, but I at least understand why people rave about it. Children of Men, while good, I don't get.

I personally liked Babel. I'll agree that it was a slow, boring movie at first, but it picked up considerably after the first 45 minutes. That scene in the Japanese night club was fantastic.

I went in thinking I would hate it because I heard it was like Crash... but I actually kinda liked the movie too. The Japanese night club scene was fantastic.

I hated Crash so much though.

Crash is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, no joke. Way too preachy, self-important, and completely undeserving of the awards it won.

He gave Clockwork Orange a bad review... : |

People give him way too much credit... I have no idea why... but they do.
He's a good writer who loves movies and has interesting things to say. No one's word should be taken as gospel, let alone Ebert's, but he's good at what he does, and people respect that.

It works as a comedy.

I thought I was alone. Well not everything in Crash is silly...
but the scene where the little girl is "shot" was horrible. Reminded me of the ending of Armageddon.
:lol

I don't think this year has been very good for mainstream movies, of course there are a few to come out but it pales in comparison to 2005 and 2006. Of course 2002 and 2003 were good, but 2004 sucked so I'm sure it's some sort of pattern. But hey, at leat Bourne Ultimatum ruled :)

For those wondering... here's the trailer for "The Bubble"

It's a great movie, but the end is very

That's a terrible movie and not the one Ebert is talking about.

He's referring to this one -

Great film, highly recommended.

5. The Prestige
6. V for Vendetta

I always forget which one is supposed to be the good one when I am out!
I already gave this advice in this thread but it's worth repeating -
When in doubt, choose the one not written by Paul Haggis.

1. Children of Men
2. The Departed
3. V for Vendetta
4. Letters for Iwo Jima
5. United 93
6. Little Children
7. The Prestige
8. Inside Man
9. Babel
10. The Queen

I still need to see Bubble, which I have a feeling would be high on my top 10 actually.

When I saw United 93 I was soooo disappointed. Really cheesy and manipulative.

Just wondering what you were expecting? Given the topic and the circumstances, I don't know how much better Greengrass could have done.

How about Half Nelson? Or The Last King of Scotland, The Proposition, Volver and l'Enfant?

Or Brick, This is England, Inside Man and Jesus Camp?

These were all good films from last year IMO, not sure how they would fit into a top 10.

Children of Men would probably occupy the top three spots of the top ten scenes from 2006, absolutely top direction but could have done with a better script.

Nice list. I would move Children of Men to 1 and boost babel and stick pans labyrinth at the bottom. stick live of others at a solid #2

None the less, all those titles are excellent and all worth viewing. Anyone who disagrees is an idiot. I hate to be an arrogant asshole, but lets face it D:

That's just mean.

Honestly, I'll forgive folks who put exceptional genre stuff (like The Prestige and Casino Royale) in their best-of lists.

I'm less forgiving of The Departed though. People want to talk about an over-rated movie that got tons of praise, this is the one they should be
aiming at.

Ten movies I liked in '06

1. Slither
2. Children of Men
3. Pan's Labyrinth
4. A Cock & Bull Story
5. Awesome I Fuckin' Shot That
6. Bubble
7. Half Nelson
8. Idiocracy
9. The Proposition
10. The Science of Sleep

You got it backward, The Departed is (for the most part) an exceptional genre movie, you can't really fault a movie because some people overrate it or read too much into it.
The Prestige and Casino Royale on the other hand, not so much.

I enjoyed the Prestige quite a bit. Until the last 5 minutes when it turned into exposition-o-rama. It was a pretty nice story until they decided to piss away their chance of a cool ending by playing Let's Explain the Whole Obvious Plot In Case Anyone Retarded Watched the Movie.

Ten movies I liked in '06

1. Slither Didn't see. I skipped it because it looked like genre drek, but you rock and I trust you, so I will try it out.
2. Children of Men
3. Pan's Labyrinth
4. A Cock & Bull Story Almost tried it out due to my deep lust for Agent Scully. Skipped it because as an english major, Tristram Shandy was a contributing factor to alcoholism and cough medicine abuse. Will check it out.
5. Awesome I Fuckin' Shot That
6. Bubble
7. Half Nelson I have not seen the previous 3 movies
8. Idiocracy Overlooked by most, seems to be getting a cult. I dug it.
9. The Proposition <3 Nick Cave! Great movie!
10. The Science of Sleep I was put off of this by reviews from other friends, but I know it is a visual movie and I am an HD whore, so chances are I will see it eventually

I usually don't agree with your opinions much, but this is how I feel. I'm probably one of the people that overrate The Departed, I guess, but it was definitely better than those two other movies.

You are guaranteed to love it.
Seriously, you're like in the middle of g-spot of the target audience for this movie.
(although it's a great movie than can and should be enjoyed by everyone, even people who never heard of this book).

p.s.
and people who actually liked been able to finish Trsitram Shandy, well, much like the 4th dimension, I can understand it exists, but my mind isn't quite capable of imagining what's it looks like.

Tristram Shandy is fun to hear about and read synopses of, but "We're going to read Tristram Shandy!" is a phrase best left to nightmares.

Even today, sometimes I will think, "You know, I am older and I am definitely a bit wiser. Maybe I will appreciate Tristram Shandy now." Then I'll pick up a copy, read a few pages, and decide to not read anything at all for a few months.

The departed was a horrible, horrible film. IA is so much better it's ridiculous.

A cock and bull story is totally charming by the way, definitely worth a watch.

departed was so damn contrived. but so was its progenitor, so that's no surprise. still, i was hoping scorcese might be able to do some mending

White Man said:

:) Be forerwarned. It's from an ex-Troma director. If you hate stuff like Tremors skip it.

White Man said:
The Proposition <3 Nick Cave! Great movie!
Same director is shooting The Road. Should be interesting.

It's his most personal film -- so it's a little pretentious because, you know, he's a French art geek. But it's got Bernal who I'll watch in pretty much anything.

1 Pan's Labyringth (I would put it in my top 5, but not number 1)

2 Bubble (did not see)

3 Children of Men (I enjoyed it, but feel it is very overrated)

4 The Departed (Most fun movie of the year)

5 The Lives of Others (Really good)

6 United 93 (Also really good)

7 "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters From Iwo Jima" ( Did not see Letters, but Flags was horrible)

8 Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (did not see)

9 Babel (a great looking film, but his humorless formula is wearing very thin with me)

10 Man Push Cart. (did not see)

A good list overall. The Prestige was my favorite film of last year, and I would also include Casino Royale, Little Children, The Last King of Scotland and the Fountain as favorites.

I second the Slither recommendation; it's surprising how much better it turns out to be than you would expect.

According to IMDB Haggis had has his grubby paws on the Iwo Jima story at some point; this was somewhat of a shock to me after I saw the film because I had previously been under the impression that he was incapabale of not fucking up a screenplay with his trademark shmaltz.
