Rottenwatch: WATCHMEN

I read the graphic novel when the movie came out (with no knowledge of what it was about). Not wanting to see the movie until I had read it, I missed it in theaters. When I was done, I was pleasantly surprised. It was great. I enjoyed it immensely, and I liked the many different thematic statements that could be taken from it.

Just finished watching the movie (unfortunately, not the directors cut). It was just as great. Surprised again. I even think the movie may have been just as good, if not better than the graphic novel. It certainly effected me more. The changing of some small technicalities at the end of the movie (a bomb, now) was no big deal. The statement was the same. Movie was perfectly cast, except for Ozymandias in my opinion. Really surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie. Going to buy the Ultimate Edition or w/e when it comes out.

While Mathew Goode might have been miscast, he's one of the best actors in the movie. His Ozymandias is the way it is because of the script, and he played it pretty much perfectly in that regard. Still would have wanted something more in line with the book, but I doubt that is his fault.

I didn't mean every person. Let's say you had ten fathers....Maybe 1 1/2 or 2 would enjoy it without any knowledge to the source. You also would have a fucked up childhood.

Like I said, all my friends got it. Granted, we're not uncultured americans.

I got my copy sitting next to my PS3 but haven't opened it yet. Have to wait until Sunday when I'm off work to watch it :(

Had a friend of mine call me up while he was watching it the other night and ask what the superpowers were of each superhero. He couldn't understand how they could be superheroes without some type of power. Though, he did like the ending.

In the comic, the dress was tied to Kitty Genovese. I thought that was a nice touch.

Oh, and some folks I know have been hung up on Bubastis (the cat) in the film. I guess their argument is that the cat comes out of nowhere and is never explained. I'm not sure it needs explanation, really. It's just a super-exotic pet owned by the richest/smartest man in a world populated by superheroes.
Yep, my brother who watched the DC with me without seeing the theatrical version or reading the GN also asked WTF was up with that thing. Without the squid Bubastis has no raison d'etre
except to be the bait for Manhattan to walk into the intrinsic field generator.

I wondered about him too when I saw the movie. Good thing I read the GN after though.

The Watchmen to me is about the same level as Elektra or Catwoman quality wise. Maybe in our lifetimes, we will see it finally done right.
Elektra or Catwoman??? REALLY?

oh wow. :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

What? Watchmen is one of the best "superhero" movies ever made.

I love how Harry Truman is Rorschach's longtime idol for dropping the a-bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and
he's against Ozymandias' plan which is basically the same thing on a larger scale

That was war.

Also, Rorschach is obsessed with the romantic notion of America. Doesn't come across in the film, but he mentions it in the book.
Ozymandias killing americans upsets him.

Yeah, so was WW2. And yes I read the GN before I saw the movie.

I think that's what Truant was saying. Rorschach supported dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki because it was during war.
Ozy's plan wasn't.

yes it was, that's the point I was trying to make. The US was in danger of all out nuclear war with the USSR. That's war, and so was WW2. It was a cold war, but it was still war.

One other question, does Manhattans teleportation only make women sick? Rors was teleported and didn't even flinch. Specter hurls her cookies each time.

Rors also didn't need a coat when traveling with Nite Owl in Antarctica. He's badass.

Veidt is by all accounts a civilian. What he did was in Rorschach's view a sort of terrorism.

Veidt's plan is to prevent an approaching war by faking an alien invasion.
Also what Truant said.

Oh for goodness sakes the BD-Live screening take place at 12:30 AM EST? The movie is three hours long!

That's what I'm thinking :lol

I thought it was 9PM. I skipped a dinner party today :/
I could've been there, had some food and come home to catch Snyder doing his thing.

Well I don't have a BD Live capable player so I don't have to worry about it :/

FUCK YOU SAMSUNG GIVE ME THE UPDATE YOU PROMISED 9 MONTHS AGO YOU FUCKING ASSHOLES!!!11!!

Is there a reason that I didn't see Alan Moore credited anywhere in the entire movie. Did I just miss it?

He didn't want his name on it.. which is why it just says David Gibbons as the co-creator.

You got a Samsuck BD player?

Ouch, I feel sorry for you. I had to break the news to my neighbors about theirs not being compatible with lots of MGM and Fox titles. They hated it because it took so long to load everything and they didn't know why some movies didn't work. Even after I did an update for them it still couldn't play Quantum of Solace.

His attitude changed after producer Martin Poll and screenwriter Larry Cohen filed a lawsuit against 20th Century Fox, alleging that the film The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen plagiarized an unproduced script they had written entitled Cast of Characters. Although the two scripts bear many similarities, most of them are elements that were added for the film and do not originate in Moore's comics. According to Moore, "they seemed to believe that the head of 20th Century Fox called me up and persuaded me to steal this screenplay, turning it into a comic book which they could then adapt back into a movie, to camouflage petty larceny." Moore testified in a deposition, a process so painful that he surmised he would have been better treated had he "molested and murdered a busload of retarded children after giving them heroin." Fox's settlement of the case insulted Moore, who interpreted it as an admission of guilt.

Wikipedia said:
The last straw came when producer Joel Silver said at a press conference for the Warner Bros. film adaptation of V for Vendetta that fellow producer Larry Wachowski had talked with Moore, and that "he [Moore] was very excited about what Larry had to say."[58] Moore claims that he told Wachowski "I didn't want anything to do with films... I wasn't interested in Hollywood," and demanded that DC Comics force Warner Bros to issue a public retraction and apology for Silver's "blatant lies". Although Silver called Moore directly to apologize, no public retraction appeared. Moore was quoted as saying that the comic book had been "specifically about things like fascism and anarchy. Those words, 'fascism' and 'anarchy,' occur nowhere in the film. It's been turned into a Bush-era parable by people too timid to set a political satire in their own country."

Wikipedia said:
As a result of Moore's disputes with DC (and then Warner Bros.), which came to a head over V for Vendetta, he declared that The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Black Dossier, a hardcover comic book, will be his last work for the publisher, and future installments of LoEG will be published by Top Shelf Productions and Knockabout Comics.[citation needed] Moore has also stated that he wishes his name to be removed from all comic work that he does not own, including Watchmen and V for Vendetta, much as unhappy film directors often choose to be credited as "Alan Smithee." He also announced that he would not allow his name to be used in any future film adaptations of works he does not own, nor would he accept any money from such adaptations. [61] This request was respected by the producers of the 2009 film adaptation of Watchmen.[62]

That's the gist of it. Moore strongly dislikes impersonal self-serving corporate establishments (e.g. Hollywood, Marvel, and DC). He doesn't want his name associated with film adaptations of his work and doesn't accept any money from the options/royalties, giving all of it to his artist co-creators.

In the flashbacks of the movie, who is the hero with the rope around his neck?

Watching the movie (director's cut) now again for the third time, I fucking love it. Can't wait for this movie to appear on Blu ray here in The Netherlands.

Hooded Justice

Well I finally saw the Watchmen today on Blu ray an I don't like it. The only parts of the movie I liked were mostly involving Doctor Manhattan, Rorshach or the original NightOwl. Really disliked how it ended an glad I just rented the movie. Now I see why many critics didn't like the movie.

So I'm guessing no one attended the screening wtih Snyder. Is there a summary somewhere? There was one with Nolan and TDK.

Why do most of the characters have such superhuman abilities?

It seemed only Dr. Manhattan had a real reason to be beyond human.

The movie didn't explain why.
Because he has an enormous schwanstucker. Voof.

Who else is getting ready for the BD-Live event?

9:30PM PDT was an odd time to choose. I'm in PDT, and I think staying up until ~1AM to watch the whole event is late. Hats off to anyone on the east coast that makes it through the whole thing :P

12:27am here! 3 more minutes!!

I don't know if anyone posted this, but there was a pre-Comic Con interview with Joel Silver and he had some interesting things to say about Watchmen.

In terms of Watchmen itself, Silver suggested that his interpretation – which by all accounts would have been directed by Terry Gilliam, a filmmaker only occasionally accessible to the mainstream - might have turned out a little more audience-friendly than Snyder's deeply faithful rendering of the material. "I love Zack and I love his work, and I think he's very talented, but the script that we developed, I think was better than the movie they made," he said. "I don't want to say he was a slave to the material because he made changes anyway, but I think it could have been a little more satisfying movie. I think Zack made a great movie, though; I don't want to minimize what he did. But I think at the end of the day it was more kind of tuned to just the big kind of fanatics of Watchmen as opposed to a broader-based audience who didn't maybe know the original comic."

Sorry if this is old, but I thought it would be interesting to someone here.

I reserved my seat by never got an instruction email. Should this thing be popping up on the BD-Live menu or something?

I'm trying to get in myself with no luck. The way it worked with Dark Knight is that you got into the screenings from the 'Express Yourself' icon (I think that's what it's called), which you can't highlight right now if you're anything like me.

Some troubleshooting says that if that stuff doesn't work you should update your BluRay Firmware. So I flick over the XMB, and there is a new PS3 firmware that I wasn't forced to download. Installing 2.80 now to see if it makes any difference, but the show should have already started by now and I might not get in :(

finally got the blu-ray from wbshop.com today, waiting for my gf to get home from work to watch it.

i didn't see it in theaters because i just couldn't find the time and then when i could it was on limited showings, etc. i'm a huge fan of the original graphic novel (yeah i barely read it a year ago, suck it), so i'm going in knowing the source material but i still have moderate hopes for the movie (i've heard people say they loved it and people say it was 3 hours of garbage).

i will say that i would prefer the movie stay faithful to the book rather than make it more appealing for a wider audience! we'll see...

I just got in from the express yourself link.

Is it really just going to be text over the top of the movie?

Lucky. I updated my PS3 and no luck.

As for the text, yeah, pretty much. If he wants to, he can pause or rewind bits of the movie to explain something in more detail, or if he just wants to go use the bathroom.

I guess I give up on trying to get in.

I'm sure most people already know this but when I got home from the film I was so impressed with Rorsharch from the movie that I looked up the actor on imdb. Imagine my shock when I saw he played troubled Kelly Leak from the Bad News Bears movies :lol

He did such a great job in Watchmen, the movie is worth watching for him alone.

Jackie Earl Haley is such an underrated actor, mainly because he's not really in a lot of mainstream movies. And when he is, he's hardly recognizable. I'm curious to see what he does with the new Nightmare on Elm Street. I have no interest in the movie outside Haley and what he's going to do as Freddy Krueger.

I didn't know he was going to be Freddy in the reboot. All of a sudden I have interest as well.

Can you recommend any other great roles Haley has done? I'm only familiar with the Bad News Bears stuff which is pretty tame (although Haley is a reason to watch them.)

Little Children is really good. It also has fellow Watchman, Patrick Wilson and Kate Winslet. Probably his best role.
