RPG-age: Do you ever quit w/o beating?

For years, I never quit an RPG without beating it. Only recently have I been on a quitting streak, mainly with X360 RPGs...

I've quit...
Lost Odyssey (Required you to have a special ability that I didn't get/boss battles too hard)
Tales of Vesperia (I might go back to this - there wasn't an FAQ for it when it first came out)
Devil Survivor (Got to one battle that was an escort mission with the cards stacked against you)
Blue Dragon (Too generic and boring)
Star Ocean 4 (Don't remember, but I probably got bored)

Others I've quit I just got bored of. I'm contemplating quitting Persona (It's very dated and dull...)

Anybody else do this?

Never quit an RPG. But I've got plenty on the DS that are half-finished and waiting for me to return. More than likely I'm probably within 2 hours of the final boss but I always seem to get bored of not so great RPG's and leave them to sit for months on end, only to finally return and finish it quickly. Leaving me to wonder, why I stopped in the first place if I was that close?

*shrug* Boring games are boring.

Infinite Undiscovery - Three hours in, it was so terrible I'm surprised I even played it for over an hour.
Final Fantasy XII - Six hours in, awful game, awful characters, awful story. What a waste of $20

Xenogears; Last Boss
FFVIII; Four hours into it
Breath of Fire III; Boredom

Those all came out at the same time. And those were among the last RPGS I've ever played.

Only Skies of Arcadia on DC was enough to make me come back.

In retrospect, RPGs are pretty terrible games because they are not fun, IMO. Every game is a waste of time better spent doing something else, so why would I want to waste my time playing shit?

I have had a bad habit of quitting games when I start them for awhile now. Usually it is RPGs as that is what I almost exclusively play.

I think I do so is when RPGs would begin to add a ton of sidequests (filler) and I would want to get everything, but then have to build myself up to "x level" to defeat "x boss" or get through "x dungeon". And then I lose interest.

But I do try my best to get through the game and if I find it extremely fun, I have no issues playing through the end.

I don't quit, but sometimes I do take extended breaks. It took me about 10 years to finish FF4, for example.

I'll even finish Star Ocean 4 some day...

I have a bad habit of not finishing a lot of rpgs. I even made a checklist for several that I was nearly finished with, but apparently lost the memory card that had the relevant saves and can't be assed to play though 40 hours of crap again. Oh well!

This, basically. RPGs are so time consuming that by the time you get to the last stretch you just want it to be over already.

Although beating Wild Arms 2 in an hour after having left it to collect dust for two years was a pretty good feeling.

Didn't we just have a thread on this very subject?

I think we did, can't recall the title though.

And I actually did quit Lost Odyssey, right at the last battle. Lost once and said screw it. The whole of disc 4 was quite meh, at least compared to disc 3.

Final Fantasy X - Quit inside Sin
Final Fantasy XII - Quit at that place across the sea
Final Fantasy VI - Always quit somewhere in the World of Ruin
Baten Kaitos - Quit in the end dungeon
Lost Oddyssey - Quit at the end of the first disc

...basically, yes. Once I feel like I've got enough fun out of a game I don't feel compelled to continue, especially in the end dungeon-ish where I just get bored because I feel like I've done everything anyway.

I just came back to FFXII yesterday after about a year off. I found out I'm pretty low-level for the part I'm at so it's time to grind, grind, grind....

Recently, I've done this very often and not just with RPGs. I usually get to the end of the game and whatever the boss/end level is, it kind of sucks and I just call it a day.

I've been playing Dragon Quest 5 on the DS, got the end, and decided that I can't do it anymore, I'm not going to grind for the next 5 or so hours to get my characters upto a level that they can beat the game.

I just started playing the Witcher and I'm half tempted to call it quits (about 2 hours in).

I just don't like aimless wandering anymore. I don't want to go on fetch quests anymore. I hate running back and forth across a big map. I hope this game picks up in another hour or so because I don't know if I can do it.

Final Fantasy IV on DS. Got all the way to the moon. Stopped. Haven't been back since. I kinda want to, but it's been a while and I've kinda forgotten my character strategy (I remember doing a lot of praying though).

I usually tend to finish my JRPGs. Nowadays, though, I'll stop playing one once I feel that I'm not getting anything out of it any more (especially if I don't find the combat system compelling enough, or there is too much tedium relative to the rest of the game).

Recent examples:
- Etrian Odyssey (found it a bit too repetitive to keep the same party setup throughout, and too tedious to opt for more breadth of options by having more characters to train up); would have enjoyed it a lot more if it allowed easier access to customization and respeccing (rather than having you either have to stick to one setup, or have to level up a bit when making new chars or de-leveling)
- Dragon Quest IV; enemy encounters were too similar to each other, and the tactical options offered by the party were a bit limited; also, the complete lack of any sort of party personality (which is a shame, since party talk would probably have fixed that)
- Rondo of Sword; interesting take on the SRPG, but so freaking unpolished on so many levels (level design, interface) that it was too daunting to continue
- Front Mission 1st; too simplistic for my tasted - having all weapons basically do the same thing (with a silly range of 1) made options in battle and customization pretty limited/needless. Shame, I was a big fan of FM3/4, too.
- Super Robot Taisen OG 2; way too repetitive gameplay. I was probably near the end, too, but couldn't take anymore of it any longer

I know some of these are considered good games, but my patience runs a bit thinner nowadays when a game fails to provide me with varied tactical challenges throughout, and I put up with a lot less than I used to.

Games I wish I quit:
- Lost Odyssey (awful AWFUL pacing)
- Star Ocean 4 (the simplistic combat system was fun enough, but not nearly good enough to put up with that game as a whole)

1. Final Fantasy 7 (Temporarily) - Quit for about a year (in Midgar), went back to it and got so hooked i maxed out all my chars, got all materia/weapons/limit breaks, and beat both weapons.

2. Persona 2: Eternal Punishment - I really like the game, but it just went on and on and on. What broke it for me was the fact that my cousin, 50+ hours ahead of me, had not even gotten to the end yet and the dungeon he was in and what he was doing was basically the exact same

3. Lost Odyssey (Currently) - Currently on disc 2, can't be bothered to pick it up. I don't mind the story or characters or anything, but i just hate how ridiculously slow the gameplay is.

4. Legend of Dragoon - I believe I am right before the final dungeon, so i wanted to get some stuff before i finish it. I go into old towns..."PLEASE INSERT DISC 2". Instantly turned me off the game and I never finished it.

Most standard JRPG's. I'll enjoy them for couple hours and eventually get tired of the boring ass grind and gameplay. SRPG's I have better luck with and stuff like Demons Souls really keeps me interested as it's very non traditional JRPG stuff.

Depends on what you mean. I never really 'quit', as in just saying 'fuck this' and giving up on a game.

However, because I'm often shifting games that I play, I sometimes wind up taking lengthy breaks from games. There are certainly RPGs out there that I've been playing off and on for 5+ years.

EDIT: Oh lol, totally misread title.

Though, I've never finished this game called Lufia 2 or something on the GBA. Fuck that game. To many long dungeons and the saving mechanics was a joke.:lol

It was also a chore for me to finish Pokemon Diamond at first. I actually just flat-out gave up but came back during Spring Break when I had nothing else to do.

Sure. When the game isn't fun or compelling enough for me to continue playing anymore, why the fuck should I waste my time with it?

Too many legitimately great games coming out to do that kind of thing.

I'm the opposite. Like an idiot I keep buying/playing RPGs, but I haven't beaten one in a couple console generations, now. Last jRPG I remember beating was PS1 era.

Although I did beat Oblivion... does that count.

Of all the JPGs I played I only beat two. :lol (and I played quite a lot). It's the only genre where I quit very early. Often it has to do with the final boss(es) or bosses in general which aren't fun most of the time.

It happens. If I don't have time for it and I leave it for too long, I usually just end up dropping it. Figure I'd have to start over to get into it again. Unfortunately, some RPGs stay in that limbo forever...

I quit too many of them, usually smacked with a brick wall or design decision changing up the game (stealth section in an RPG, for instance, that I just CANT do) and it pains me to give up, but it's just too much for me.

Totally.

Ironically, many games Ive stopped before the final dungeon :\

yeah, I quit Lost Odyssey around disc 3 (when the party gets separated)
Blue Dragon around 18-20 hours in (can’t remember where exactly)
Tales of Vesperia I quit after about 14-15 hours. I liked it but had to put it away for a bit and just never got back to it.

I enjoyed all those games but I wasn’t interested enough in their stories or fighting mechanics to keep playing after so much time spent on each of them.

Maybe one of these days I’ll pick up the games used and finish them off. Lost Odyssey is probably the best bet for that to happen

Quit Persona 3 and Persona 4. Large sections of that series are just too fucking tedious, running up levels and fighting enemy and after enemy is some of the most boring shit I can think of in videogames, and these games throw it at you in spades. And fuck off with this your main character is dead, game over bullshit, use a fucking revive spell douchebags.

Pretty much all the time. The only real RPGs that I've beaten are FFVI and Chrono Trigger, but both of those were a long time ago.

I'm actually going to start a game in FFIV right now, and hopefully beat it. Then I guess I'll move on to 7, because I bought it over PSN months ago and haven't touched it.

All the time.

These are the only RPGs I've beaten from start to finish.

-Chrono Trigger
-Dark Cloud 2
-KOTOR
-Morrowind
-Jade Empire
-Final Fantasy VI
-Dragon Quest VIII
-Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
-Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
-Gladius (if that counts)
-Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
-Fable 2

I quit Skies of Arcadia right before the final dungeon. Saved right before engaging the airship battle and never bothered loading it again. Just didn't care.

Quit Persona 3 in August or September. The summer vacation was just too fucking boring to trudge through.

Oh and TTYD :lol

Those are just the ones I put actual time in to, I normally give up on RPGs within about two hours.

Hmm...

Final Fantasy VI, VII
Super Mario RPG
Paper Mario
Lost Odyssey
KOTOR
Mass Effect (If kotor counts, why not)
Fable II
Legend of Mana
Final Fantasy Legend

And that's it. I've played tons of RPGs.

Plenty of times, why waste time when I can just youtube the ending considering how generic the story is or how repetitive the gameplay is.

I have sunk a massive number of hours into Morrowind without pursuing the end fo the "campaign". But I didn't quit the game.

Xenosaga I just quit near the final boss. Completely lost interest.

I've never not completed a game I payed full price for. Bargain bin games (Blue Dragon), sure.

Pretty much this.

Not just any one genre, I usually finish any decent games I own.

Only time I don't finish is if the game is borrowed(i.e. Psychonauts, though I just got it over Xbox Originals yesterday and will probably beat it by the end of this week).

Usually I only quit if I get to a point (usually the last boss or some portion of the endgame) where I will have to spend more time grinding than remains in the story in order to pass it.

The only one I can think of is Persona 3. I quite enjoyed the game, but damn is it long. About 40-60 hours in, I just got completely burnt out on it.
