RPGs that are interesting from a design standpoint?

That's actually a good point, even if presented in a somewhat obnoxious way :P

TWEWY's system of continously being able to adjust your difficulty and your own level was certainly novel and interesting, as is the option of easily being able to replay every part of the game. Then there's the dual battle system, the fashion system, eveling via mingling or while the game is turned off ... it's surprising it hasn't been mentioned before.

The World Ends with You had a number of cool ideas to take advantage of its RPG elements.

1) Battles? Who needs 'em?: Almost no such thing as random battles in this game. You were free to battle as much or as little as you chose. Want to rush through the game? Go for it. Want to sit in one place and collect money? Sure, you can do that too. But wouldn't grinding for money result in you leveling too far and making the rest of the game too easy?

2) Cashing in: Fear not, TWEWY allows you to manipulate your level at will. No matter the level, you can drop down to any previous level while outside of battle, converting your levels into an increased drop rate, meaning the more you farm, the easier it gets.

3) Trends: Every pin and equipment you could acquire can have a brand. Depending on where you are in town, the trends can affect your battle statistics. Fairly unusual, but it gave you a reason to not simply trade up in equipment every chance you got.

4) Store Clerks: In TWEWY, each store has it's own clerk, complete with personality and unique dialog. Frequenting shops allowed you to become friends with them, resulting in unique new items being put up for sale.

5) Take a Break: The game rewarded you with in-game XP for not playing. This XP was even of a unique type, so certain pin evolutions could only be reached through taking a break from the game for a while.

There's more, but I think that should suffice for now.

EDIT: Page 2 is our turf, yo.

Seriously, The World Ends With You is one of the most unique, innovative, and interesting games to come out in very long time.

I also agree with Durante that Valkyria definitely move the SRPG forward. There are so many possibilities to make this even better.

I agree with your other points, but the Atelier Iris sries did this earlier, and even a bit more in-depth.

I'm not a super-hardcore RPG player, and completely avoided them as a kid, so I've missed most of these earlier RPGs. Apologies.

Has no one mentioned Vagrant Story or did I just miss it? And I have to give the easy and obvious shout out to Valkyria Chronicles for obvious reasons.

BETRAYAL AT KRONDOR - the perfect RPG adapted from a novel series. It had a huge 3-D world to explore, as well as characters you relate to. Deep combat and weapon repair makes it unique and ahead of its time.

THE FAERY TALE ADVENTURE - groundbreaking for its time for its excellent blend of adventure, storytelling and RPG. Highly accessible, story-driven and features fantastic scenarios, it was unique and fun.

HERO'S QUEST: SO YOU WANT TO BE A HERO? - the classic blending of adventure and RPG - with kick-ass humor and plenty of storytelling. Later known as QUEST FOR GLORY, but surely you knew that?

Golden Sun implements dungeon puzzles on par with Zelda

It's pretty annoyingly generic. I started and restarted Golden Sun several times over before I realized that I was just not going to finish it. Ugh.
