RTJ2 - Run The Jewels - 10.28.2014

Any live impressions?

They sold out the DC show. They were awesome, but the sound tech should've made Mike's mic louder or some shit. El was easier to hear through all the music. Shit was rowdy as fuck for the first 5 songs and then the crowd started to sorta chill out a little more, but I guess from where I was standing it started to pierce my ears so I moved further back to enjoy.

They got great chemistry and you can tell they are happy as hell doing what they love.

I was at the DC show on Friday. It was sold out and the crowd was really into the performance. I've seen El-P live a few times before but it was different with Killer Mike, it was better. Here is a super short clip they posted on instagram:

As for the album, like it better than the first one.

Run The Jewels: "Early" - David Letterman

Awkward performance on Letterman. Song is too boring for a showcase spot on TV. It's a mid set song. Perform something that has energy like Oh My Darling or All Due Respect.
Seeing the boys stand behind microphone stands with nothing to do is uncomfortable to watch.

AND if someone wants to spin this is as they played a song with a message..who cares. No one watching is going to be able to understand what they are saying on a first listen. They will remember a boring band or a band jumping around having a good time.

Also, the zombie hand symbol album cover thing they are heavily pushing now is really silly. Put your hands like this everyone, that's Run the Jewels! What?

Audience be like Run the Jewels? More like clutch your pearls.

If anyone is going to the Houston show this weekend hit a sister up! I have a David Sedaris thing earlier in the evening but would love to have a beer with a gaffer.

Definitely in the top 5 albums of the year for me, there's so much energy in this project it's hard not to get hyped as fuck when listening. Can't wait to see them next month.

I'm going to bang this bitch the fuck out! Let's go El-P!

Is there a consensus on Love Again? Is it a misogynist as I've heard it called, as I really don't know. Great beat, and not exactly a song about fucking random women (more like one, over and over).

Did you only listen to the physical cd (not deluxe or vinyl) version? Gangsta Boo is on the track and completely flips the misogyny with her verse, but you may not have heard that one. It's fuckin great imo.

I have the digital version, and her verse is awesome, and does exactly as you said, in my mind. I don't believe the song is misogynist, but have heard others say as such. I did not know there was a different version without her verse, and could see how it might come off that way (except, even then, not really).

Saw them tonight in Atlanta. Unfortunately... I don't have many good things to say.

Big fan of the first RTJ album and love El and Mike's solo work. Hadn't listened to the new one much yet, but that wasn't really the issue. The doors opened at 8pm so I figured alright there's probably a bit of sitting around then an opener for an hour... nope there was a guy wearing a "Rap Fan" shirt running around the stage saying "yea!" "ok!" "lemme hear ya!" while 90s and 00s rap songs played in the background by a DJ. This went on until 11:20pm with just 20 - 30 minutes of "opening acts" breaking up Rap Fan's dance. It's not Rap Fan's fault though... I think Mike and El just weren't even there until 11:10pm when Rap Fan was saying "they're in the building!!" Seems kind of rude to show up 3 hours late to your own show.... All other shows I've been to the artists were at least around and getting ready.

When Mike and El did come on I was thinking alright well the show will be great so it'll be alright that we waited 3 hours. Well, the audio fidelity was terrible since they didn't do a proper sound check so the sound wasn't very clear and was set too high for the speakers to handle. It was cool to hear some of the songs I like, but they only played a 1 hour set and then 1 encore song and left.

Feels like a ripoff and I am very disappointed : /

Lie, Cheat, Steal is my favorite track.

Shit ciaossu, Ratking didn't open for them? I'm seeing them Next Tuesday, hopefully it goes well. Sorry about your experience.

Something happened with Ratking and they couldn't be there. No idea what

Damn ciaossu, that sucks :/

Lie, Cheat, Steal is probably my favorite track, too. It's tough. Angel Duster is a fuckin perfect closer though.

Same thing happened to me when I saw Mos Def and Talib Kweli. They didn't go on until almost midnight. I know it sounds weird to say, but I'm glad they're going on late. Purely selfish reasons, of course. I have an engagement earlier in the evening and was going to high tail it over to the venue after. This means I won't miss one of the THREE openers. (3 is a lot...am I trippin?)

Do they have more than an hour and a half of music together?

Crown, Early and Love Again are by far my favorite tracks

Yeah, weird for people to rip on the song for that.

Have you been to that many concerts? I don't mean to be flippant, but the Doors Open time isn't always very close to the actual set time. Typically you can call the venue to figure out when people are supposed to actually go on stage. The 9:30 Club (the DC venue) posts the set times day of, and they made it clear they were going up two an a half hours after the doors opened.

It's be one thing if the set sucked, that's fine, but typically set times and all that are determined and agreed upon between the artist and the venue. The late show was definitely past my bedtime but when I saw them in DC, I thought it was one of the best shows I've ever seen, and I typically attend +10 concerts a year.

Yeah I've been to a few dozen shows over the years. I think for me 2 hours after doors open is pushing it and that's expecting a decent opener. There wasn't really an opener... it was just our time being wasted.

But I found this on twitter:
TONIGHTS SET TIMES: @ScottyATL 930pm. @despotroast 1010pm, @runjewels 1115pm.

Looks like El-P tweeted that yesterday before the show. I guess the lesson is that you should expect these guys to go on way later than standard (or what I expect as standard).

Ratking got picked up by the police a few nights ago.

hopefully they're out by the SF show...

My top 5 for now:

1. Lie, Cheat, Steal
2. Oh My Darling Don't Cry
3. Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)
4. Angel Duster
5. Love Again (Akinyele Back)

Hearing the bass kick in and then Killer Mike go "oh my" is insanely funny.

Hearing the bass kick in and then Killer Mike go "oh my" is insanely funny.

The bass, the incredible chemistry, the individual verses, the pitch shifted "darling" sample that contrasts with the filtered DONT DONTs, the sound effects, the beat in the end. Everything is flawless in that song.

I love the part where Mike speeds up his flow and El-P laughs maniacally.

[Verse 3: El-P]
Life is hell, death's a bitch
And these FUBAR rulers getting rich
I cop a zip, it opens up
I smoke it up, go home and fuck
C'est la vie girl, when in Rome
I gave the face, please pay with dome
My business card says you're in luck
I do two things, I rap and fuck

[Verse 4: Killer Mike]
I fuckin' rap
I tote the strap
I smoke the kush
I beat the puss
I read the books, did the math
Don't need a preacher preachin' on my behalf
No teacher can't teach my arrogant ass
I'm blowin' on crippy while readin' the scriptures as written by Egyptians while sippin' on whiskey
Aye baby you with me?

The way Mike picks up after El-P finishes and the way his verse ends afterwards

I was at the Atlanta show as well, and I thought it was pretty great. Easily the best rap show I've been to. The hype man was a bit much, especially yelling at us to jump when they randomly played Van Halen.

Both of the openers were solid, though. Despot's new tracks were awesome and I enjoyed hearing some new music.

The sound was definitely off though, Despot even said there was too much reverb during his set but the tech said it was a loud show beneath us... The masquerade isn't really a top notch venue. And it is definitely violating fire codes.

El-P and Killer Mike fucking killed it though, the show was an absolute blast.

even mikea nd el's verses aren't really misogynist. they're horny but consensual and not disrespectful. I can see how people who have the versionwithout boo's verse would be thrown though.

Yeah I was gonna say, no shade but the first half of your experience is just the normal experience for a show. if you wanted to show up just for mike and el you couldve checked the set times easily. Also I doubt mike and el got there at 11:10, they were probably in the green room or if they were gone they were out to dinner. what literally every musical act does before a show. Otherwise yeah the schedule you described sounds standard: doors at 8, first act at 9 for a half hour, break, second act around 10 thru 10:30, break, headliner. I agree it sucks but it's the standard for all shows, from rap to pop to rock to anything. I don't know where you got your standard tbh

My revised, final top 5:

  1. Oh My Darling Don't Cry
  2. Angel Duster
  3. Lie, Cheat, Steal
  4. Love Again
  5. All Due Respect

these somewhat interchange for me but yeah, this works as my list too
still waiting on the vinyl to get here but damn if this might not be my AOTY, cant even get ready for the gym without hearin THAT FUCKBOI LIFE BOUT TO BE REPELLED, FUCKBOI JIHAD KILL INFIDELS

They played the same length set in DC, like an hour set, then one encore song. You didn't get a shortened show or something.

I don't listen to much rap/hip hop stuff but man I absolutely love this album. I love death grips and a lot of these beats give me DG vibes. Really fucking good. Love this abstract style.

Tha fuck, why isn't Gangsta Boo's verse on the physical? It's the best part of the song and it goes a long way in clarifying that the song isn't some horndog sausage fest. I mean without it you can see it's not misogynistic but I can see sort of how someone can get that feeling. It just makes no sense for it not to be on there.

In other news I found out it wasn't on the album after buying the physical at a signing they did here before their show. These dudes where super chill. I was actually expecting El-P to be sort of a douche but he was really down to earth and more warmer than Killer Mike who I've heard is a teddy bear to fans. He wasn't mean or anything, just seemed sort of disinterested in the signing. Could have just been cuz of my friend bombing El-P with small talk about recent interviews and Mike feeling left out. Mike did make a funny face for our pic tho.

If you get the chance I would meet them! I don't think they are ever gonna crossover into the mainstream truly, they are too abrasive for that, but it seems fairly easy to meet them and hang around for a bit right now.
