RTTP: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Ugh why did this thread have to inspire me to try to load up the PC version at 3am? Even on a ridiculous 2-bar connection to parts unknown the game is stupidly fun. Best music of any COD, best maps, best weapons, and best killstreaks. Another thing I love is that my classes have so much variety. Noob tube guy, knife monkey, AR guy, SMG rusher guy, dickhead sniper. They made use of so many different perks. In other CODs, and really even in Titanfall for that matter, my loadouts gravitate towards the same perks with only minor differences. Just about the only thing I didn't like about the game was the endless 420 calling cards. Haha. Joint Ops. I get it............

I'm hoping this gets the remaster treatment next, assuming the COD4 remaster is you know, actually good and true to the original. I would love for a modern, hack free, dedicated server version of this game with massive numbers of players for at least a couple of months.

The PC version desperately needed some more TLC, at least a god damn FOV slider. I can't blame the PC community for turning their backs on COD over this port. My 360 isn't handy at the moment, but that's where I played it the most.

Damn you Rayme for making me dream of the true MW3 that never happened. I actually liked the MW3 well enough all things considered. Certainly the least of the three M-Dubs, but versus the off-brand studios, I thought it compared pretty favorably. Aside from Black Ops 2 I don't know if any of the other milk-it-dry COD games are worth remembering.

Found that there was an FOV Slider in the RocketV2 client last night.

When people talk about broken things, it's not always weapons or killstreaks. MW2 is one of my favorite games ever but there were legitimately broken aspects of the game.

The OMA perk constantly replenishing explosives was something that was constantly abused. The glitch to call in infinite care packages or use the care package marker to run at super speed were annoying to deal with as well. There were also spots where you could get into map geometry and shoot out and kill people from it, but couldn't be shot back at.

That being said if I could play the game on PS4 tomorrow with all those glitches included, I would.

Yeah, but that was all part of the charm! It was chaotic and fun - something I loved a lot. Also, I believe the care package glitch was fixed.

MW2 was the most broken fun I had for an entire year when it dropped. And I'm still looking for something that can recapture the magic of Spec Ops. Still haven't beat the juggernaut mission.

Tried it out, not sure if I'm in love with all the changes, and trying to switch the UI somehow hard locked my whole system, but the server browser, FOV, uncapped frame rate and all that were pretty nice. Bad ping to euro servers though, nobody playing locally at this time. I'll have to try it again later.

Yeah when I switched UI i had the same thing, black screen - had to reset machine.

but everything else is really cool!

Was gonna make my own thread but realized this was a recent one so I'm just gonna transfer my written stuff up accordingly

So all this talk about the MW1 Remaster got me in the mood again, but since I don't have said remaster and my original PC copy of MW1 got lost to void ages ago, I settled for the next best thing and chucked in Modern Warfare 2 into my PS3. That said, this may sound surprising, but I didn't care enough for any Call of Duty MP modes to revisit them. This pretty much strictly about the campaign because they are also for my favorites parts of the CoD games that I have played, even with all their stupid things. All that said, let's get into my observations of this....wow, 7 year old game? Where does the time ago?

- First of all

^This is still a shitty cover

- I didn't really like the way this story escalated then and I still don't like it now. The first modern warfare really nailed this nuanced and tame, Ridley Scott/Tom Clancy military thriller-esque tone and I loved it for it. It was a great transition from the WW2 games back then in that regard. Of course, as many know, MW2 jumped the shark in the most Michael Bay way possible, and while it worked for certain spots (The oil rig and gulag levels are sweet), it wasn't my cup of tea back when I played this in high-school and it just feels way more off at my age now. Not to mention suuuuper dumb in terms of diplomacy. I know it's kinda odd overthinking this for CoD campaign of all things, but I couldn't help being letdown especialy after that fucking great teaser trailer all those years ago that implied something else.

- Unsurprisingly, graphics look rather blargh now, or at least inconsistent. It didn't occur to me until now how much the levels were suffering from 2D wallpaper-background syndrome, and how murky most of the texture work looks. I also hated the whole orange filter the DC invasion levels had -- I mean I get everything is burning and shit, but ehhhh. The gun modelling is still pretty damn good though and for those who went from vanilla MW1 to this game, it was one hell of a night and day difference. The same can be said for character model detail too, even if they looked puppet like compared to current gen standards.

- Music was still great despite all their patriotic cheese. Thank you based Zimmer/Balfe.

- Although I liked the tone of the Rio levels because they kinda harkened back to MW1 somewhat, those were easily still the worst levels gameplay-wise. This is not just because of the infinitely spawning enemy spam, but because you can literally finish each of them in five minutes by merely running and gunning fast enough, and I hadn't realized that until now. There were two smaller segments later in the campaign that also did this.

- Now let's talk about 'No Russian'. It's weird looking at this now after all the incredible commotion this caused in the mainstream media many years ago. Heck I went, "WHOA SHIT SO EDGY THIS IS PRETTY BALLSY" back then too. And you know what? Yeah, it's pretty well handled tonal wise albeit not that perfect. I mean, it's obvious shock value baiting, but it's not as fucking hilarious of an attempt such as when they blew up a dancing, happy little girl in the next game.

- The military chatter in this game is just hilarious now and I even got flashbacks to those old Ramirez! Do Everything memes. I mean, I have no military experience but it just feels so hammy and overdone. OVERLORD OSCAR MIKE STAY FROSTY HOOAH CUT THE CHATTER. That said, voice acting is still really solid - can't get enough of Keith David or that one guy from Saving Private Ryan and We Were Soldiers whose name escapes me.

Overall, even for all its dumbness, this campaign was kinda still a fun romp to get through but to this day, I still couldn't help but feel they could have dome something better. Dunno if I want to revisit the next game's campaign as I remember that just made the same issues I had with this one way worse.

Just finished the MW1 Remaster, and it is without a doubt the best remaster I have ever played. (Halo 2 Anniversary a close second).

I have nothing on my mind now aside from how amazing a MW2 Remaster will be. Make it happen Activision. If we don't make it to MW3 that's fine, I just need MW2 campaign remastered so bad.

Only CoD I got the Platinum for (though I got somewhat close with Black Ops 1). Imperfect but awesome. Had everything and the kitchen sink.

A remaster of MWR quality that makes a few key adjustments to multiplayer (OMA + Tubes + Danger Close fix plz...) would be heavenly.

I just replayed the campaign on PC at 8k res (DSR to 4k) and I would strongly disagree about the graphics. There is some weak texture work when it comes to skyboxes, but the rest of the game has incredible textures. The level of detail in geometry and the number of objects in various scenes is very impressive, animations are great, and the overall art direction is top tier. The engine is pretty limited when it comes to dynamic lighting and other shader effects as to be expected from a 2009 game primarily targeted at consoles, but I would still consider it to be one of the best looking DX9 titles.
