RTTP: Dexter's Laboratory (1996-1998)

Great show, and great episodes. Another one that sticks in my memory is when Dexter makes a big Voltron robot and has to tell his family about the lab in order to have them help him pilot it, since obviously it takes multiple people. Then, at the end, I think he wipes their memories so they forget again.

And, of course, the musical episodes were great. I still can't listen to an arpeggio without "When my music meets your science/they're the biggest of the giants!"

Also, "That's Professor Hawk, shoobity doobity doo!"

Edit: actual best episode is the one written by the 10 year old kid, or whatever. "But Mandark...accidentally left the shrink ray on grow! And then Dexter said...and then DeeDee said...and then Mandark's head grew so big, it was the size of the planet! And then his head was the planet!"

Edit2: oh, and the opera episode!
"HELLO DEAR BROTHER. What have you got there?"
"Nothing! Nothing! You only see air!"
And
"IIIIIIIIIIIII AAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMM
making believe I'm sailing on the sea."
Shit, I need to watch this show again.

Can't forget this great moment.

the decoder spelled DICKS

Thought I'd give this a bump as I recently finished my rewatch of the show including the new seasons. A lot of episodes there I haven't even seen before. I've seen so many people despise the new episodes like they're abominations or something, but really they're nowhere near that bad.

"They changed the voice actor of Dexter and she SUCKS"

It's not like CN could help it since her original VA, Christine Cavanaugh, retired. Candi Milo does a fine job. By Season 4 you really don't notice the change. Funny enough, in one episode with Old Dexter and Dee Dee, I actually thought they got Cavanaugh back, the resemblance of their crotchety old voices was uncanny.

"The show got really ugly with its new artstyle"

Ehhhhh. I'm kinda torn. It certainly lacks the charm of the hand drawn original episodes, but it just seems like a small side effect of going digital. The disappointing "what could have been" moment was seeing the S4 episode "Chicken Scratch". The only new episode Directed by Genndy. The characters are animated so much livelier and more fluid while the other episodes are okay, it's really the best the series had ever looked.

"The writing and humor is good awful"

This is just flat out wrong. A lot of the writers stayed on board for the new episodes. Season 3 is all around solid with a lot of fun episodes. Season 4 I admit is more hit or miss. The final episode is a really mediocre letdown too. But there's still a lot of really good entertaining episodes in the new seasons. Only REAL downside is the lack of Justice Friends/Monkey, but I think focusing the show on Dexter was probably the right call anyway.

Can't forget this great moment.

I love this episode. And yet I hate when people feel the need to post this gif to show how they feel about MLP and Bronies. "Ugh I wish I could do this to everything MLP related. ARGH! I hate it so much" Yeah, sure dude. Ironically enough a lot of the people who worked on Dexter worked on MLP as well.

I love Dexter's Lab. Way back when I got pay sat-TV and discovered Cartoon Network, I spent that whole summer watching Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, the Powerpuff Girls and Cow & Chicken. Man, I loved those shows, but Dexter's Lab was just the best. I *LOVE* the voice acting in that show. And its art and animation style are so simple yet work so damn well. Gotta check if it's available on DVD.

Dexter's Lab?! Looks like some kind of low rent Johnny Test ripoff. No thanks.

I loved Dexter's Lab. Fond memories of watching this and Cow & Chicken. Pretty sure Hulu added a bunch of these older CN and Adult Swim shows. Excuse me while I binge.

When this came back after several seasons of the show being over, and the art got awful, and the voices sucked, and they redesigned Dad

god the show went south

It was an example of bringing back a series and its characters, and not understanding what made the original series and characters great in the first place.

Anywho, this show is an absolute classic. I loved it growing up, and it definitely still holds up now. One of Cartoon Network's finest.

At first when it returned they didn't even have episode unique title card art, I like to think that said it all really.

"no you're wrong, you DIDN'T not enjoy it!'

pointing out that they brought back the old writers is pointless. All that means is the old writers wrote some shitty episodes.

Not necessarily disagreeing with you, I just think my recent rewatch of ALL the episodes together provides some unique perspective and that more people should probably do the same.

Why do you assume I haven't seen this show recently?

Well you never said. I'm not trying to sound like I'm right and you're wrong or anything. I mean, hey opinions, amirite? I was just seeing comments about how horrible the new episodes are. I watched them and I just feel like the hate is overblown and people are ridiculously harsh about it. No need to get so defensive.

Gonna be honest here, this show in hindsight wasn't that good. Well, the main show i mean.

Not gonna deny it, the GOOD episodes of DL were AMAZING, this thread is already full of classic moments, but most of them were really bland.

I always found the side shows (Justice friends, Dial M for Monkey) to be superior in every way, i specially loved that season finale where the 3 shows came together.

What is good was GREAT, but the nostalgia clouds our minds from the lacking bits of it.
