So I found my old Scooby Doo Movie VHS earlier today, and wow. So many memories. I loved the first movie as a kid, but after watching it again...wow. It was not a Scooby Doo adaptation AT ALL. It was more of an adult parody (only slightly less than Scooby Doo XXX). Girls in bikinis, Mary Jane standing for Marijuana, Velma getting drunk, and Scrappy gaining revenge. It was all so ridiculous, but the fact they were parodying it went way over my head as a kid, but that was my favorite factor watching it older.

So I was like, now that I've wasted time like that, I might as well find the second one.

After rummaging through the dvd cabinet, I came upon Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Fucking Unleashed. Holy shit.

I remember loving this way more than the original as a kid. Now that I've found a new taste for the first Scooby movie, I gotta say...I still love the second one way more. The old monsters from the series coming back, Velma and Daphne looking even hotter, Seth Green, and so much more. If the first one was a parody, then this second movie is a homage. A wonderful one at that.

What say you GAF?

Wholeheartedly agree. I find Scooby Doo 2 to be more well rounded as well. The comedy, the homages, the actual story. Scooby Doo is definitely bad. It's an attempt at creating a Scooby Doo story, but falls completely flat. Nothing will ever beat as a kid seeing Captain Cutler/The Black Knight/Cotton Candy Glob on the big screen.

Especially Captain Cutler.

"Captain Cutler's Ghost....CAPTAIN CUTLER'S GHOST."

So good. Matthew Lillard was perfect as Shaggy, not surprised he's voicing him in the Mystery Incorporated series, or so I've heard.

He's actually doing a great job at it. Did Scooby Doo 2 have a better sense of direction? I kind of remember Scooby Doo being a mild mess in that regard.

Such weird and wonderful in their own right movie adaptations. So secretly adult, Daphne was basically Buffy with red hair, and Scrappy? They sure went there.

I watched this movie with my nephews once years ago. I really hate scooby doo, I just don't "get it". But man oh man did I stick around after seeing Velma on screen in that movie. I said god damn... o_O

Godlike work done by the casting crew there. Kudos.

There was also pimping out Velma in both films. Which I'm okay with now.
If there really was a woman who looked like that and had the same amount of brains to go along with the body I'd worship her as a Goddess.

Scooby Doo nerd with some info you guys might appreciate:

The first Scooby Doo movie was originally filmed as a PG-13 movie, so there were plenty of scenes/jokes that were shot or planned, such as a Velma/Daphne kiss, Velma lustfully staring at Daphne, Fred trying to talk his way into Daphne's hotel room under the pretense of protecting her, and others. Warner Brothers wanted it to appeal to kids and adults, so they cut out all that PG-13 stuff, so they could get a movie that kids could enjoy with a few jokes that would go over their heads for parents to laugh at too. Certain things, such as Shaggy's "favorite name", Mary Jane, is one example of something fairly inappropriate that lingered from the original script, but there was no way to simply edit her name/part out.

This footage has never been released and I can't see it ever happening, unfortunately.

Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed is definitely my favorite of the two, and I genuinely think it's a good movie. I cannot get over how well they captured the feeling of the cartoon in certain sets like Wickles' Mansion, their museum (with all the original monsters!) and their headquarters. The flashback sequence with "You Get What You Give" by the New Radicals playing made me tear up when I saw it in theaters, embarrassingly enough. The second movie actually had some scene that referenced drugs and got enough parents to complain that it was edited out of home video releases and never seen again. I'm so sad that we never got a third movie, and I wish we could see what the original vision of the first movie was -- it would probably have made for a better movie.

If any of you guys are still in the mood for more Scooby and the gang, I cannot recommend enough the current version of the cartoon Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated. It's EASILY the best iteration of the show ever done and my favorite TV show at the moment.

Current OT for the show

Linda Cardellini voices a recurring character in Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated who is the new "lesbian" since Velma is no longer that girl.

I like the movies in a tongue and cheek kind of way.

I still say though

Zombie Island
Alien Invaders
Witch's Ghost
Cyberspace

Easily the best movies, live or cartoon. Especially Zombie Island.

Lol Velma was never the lesbian girl. I've always thought of her as the awkward girl that had a thing for Fred but never talked about it.
Still though, Linda Cardellini man. So good.

I always thought of her a lesbian feminazi, but I did see the Venture Bros. parody not too long after reaching that conclusion.

A man can dream.

I only saw the first movie, and I didn't like it. Lillard was perfect, Velma was attractive, and the opening was a pretty cool homage to the show, but that's pretty much it. Once they get to the island, it doesn't feel like Scooby Doo anymore. Maybe it was just the magic and monsters, but it all just seemed 'off'. Scrappy being the villain was a nice mythology gag though.

I remember loving the original as a kid. Scrappy being the villain was a nice touch. Only saw about five minutes of the second one.

I should watch both sometime

Came for this, left not disappointed

The Velma is a lesbian and Shaggy is pot head jokes will never escaped Scooby Doo's legacy

Oh yeah. Zombie Island is the best out out of all the animated movies by far. I dunno why it holds up so well; I'd gladly watch it over and over again, where as most of the animated Scooby movies are so bad that I can't even sit through them once.

The live action films were pretty good, too, though I haven't seen them in a dogs age (LOL). I have to agree with most of the people in this thread: it was Velma and Shaggy that made them watchable.
Linda Cardellini was great as Velma, but Matthew Lillard was the star of those movies like woah. This is one of my favorite clips from the second one, when Shaggy is trying to get Scooby to raise his paw for an oath.

There is no party here. The casting was the only good thing about these movies. Lillard and Cardellini were godlike choices, and it's not surprising they are the only bits the franchise salvaged.

I think it's because it can be seen as almost the "climax" of Scooby Doo adventures, because it starts off with the gang maturing and at other paths in their lives, whereas the rest of the films are just them on silly adventures again. There was a ton of heart.

Ah, so I was right. The first was a "mature" parody, the second was a homage.

the third movie was actually surprisingly decent, despite changing the cast.

The one on cartoon network was awful.

Sooooo why is
Scrappy Doo
the Villain in the end of the second live movie Scooby Doo?

It was the first live movie. And it was because apparently when Scappy was first introduced into the cartoon, everyone hated him. Idk, maybe it's because his introduction was before my time, but I've always loved him.

Really? Whoopsie daisy then xD never liked Scrappy so maybe I understand why he is the villain then :p I really liked Scooby Dumb

That's a good point. I guess there are some cartoon characters that just really need to mature like the rest of us to stay valid (as opposed to characters that never age).

As for all these Velma appreciation pictures...

Aaand now I wanna watch the old Scooby Doo cartoons /sadface
My favorite opening, the first intro :)

I also remembered that Linda Cardellini does the voice for Wendy on Gravity Falls, which is super amazing if anyone hasn't checked it out yet. It's got mysteries, too!

I feel awful that most of the cast pretty much died out after Scooby Doo. Especially Sarah Michelle Gellar. Straight to TV.

Man, second rewatch, and I just now got the reference of Scooby and Shaggy getting high after the first mystery, but it turns out they're just cooking burgers haha

I don't know how many of you guys have already seen this, but it's one of the better porn parody efforts I've seen, having only seen trailers.

Youtube -- Scooby Doo XXX Trailer (NSFW-ish for language)

I realize that it's a porn parody and not a live action movie, but I can't help but be bothered that Bree Olsen didn't wear a wig or color her hair or something as Daphne.

The whole movie sans the sex scenes is up on Youtube if you feel compelled to watch the whole thing.

Surprised to see love for the second, I thought it was generally considered inferior to the first. I actually preferred it too. Shame about the cuts to the first, and that we never got a third.

Talk about a coincidence. It turned out that some TV station I've literally never even heard of called "The Hub" aired Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.

There's also an HD version of the channel, which is what I watched, and they are going to air the movie once again tomorrow afternoon (as well as the first this time). It appears that all the major cable providers carry the channel, if any of you guys are interested in watching it/them. It was my first time seeing the movie in HD, and I was very impressed with how it looked.

I would suggest you look up your local listings because this seems strange to me, but the channel's schedule shows that the first Scooby Doo movie starts at 3 PM and Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed at 5 PM EST, except the movie will be played at that hour for the whole country and not staggered so that everybody watches them at those hours in their own time zones. So those on PST have the movies starting at 12 PM and 2 PM, respectively. This could be an oversight/glitch on their site, but I have no idea what this channel is or how it does things, so if you are interested in seeing the movie(s) in general, particularly in HD, make sure to check on your TV guide.
