RTTP: Super Mario Galaxy (on Dolphin 5.0)

Reading about the latest release of the Dolphin emulator recently inspired me to drag my Wii out of storage in order to rip a few of my games (which turned out to be an interesting process in itself).

First cab off the rank was Super Mario Galaxy, the game that pretty much sold me on the console in the first place, and boy is this thing a treat to revisit on PC. Nintendo's art-over-tech philosophy pays off in spades here, with the game looking absolutely stellar (pun intended) in 1080p with the benefit of higher-end effects like anti-aliasing and downsampling. It may not be cutting edge, but this would still be an extremely handsome game on current-gen consoles.

In a move that may shock and disturb console gamers, I'm actually playing this thing on Keyboard and Mouse. My preference would've been my Xbox One controller, but the regular use of pointer controls in Galaxy made that option more trouble than it was worth. I've settled on mouse for pointing, LMB and RMB for jump and spin respectively, with MMB for shooting starbits and WASD/Shift on the keyboard for movement and butt-stomping. It sounds like a nightmare, but 30 stars in and I'm finding it works pretty well.

Shutting up about technical stuff for a moment, the game itself is obviously still fantastic. It's actually probably my favourite Mario game all told, partly because it's just a mechanically and artistically fantastic title, but also in large part because it gets the balance of new vs old just right. I've often felt that Nintendo can lean a bit hard on their classic iconography with their core franchises, but Galaxy I feel strikes just the right middle point between including the things we expect of Mario, while adding tons of fresh content to give the whole package a wonderful feeling of "newness".

The worlds exhibit tons of character and variety in both design and mechanics, making great use of the Wii's hardware gimmicks while not straying too far from the excellent 3D platforming staples. The game is also my favourite Nintendo title from an audio perspective, with some absolutely outstanding tracks and sounds that stand apart from any other Mario game. That dedication to sounding distinct is one of my favourite things it does, and when you get those little snippets of classic tunes popping up they're all the more effective for it.

I'll also say that the team behind Dolphin deserve some mad kudos. The game runs pretty much flawlessly on my machine and the setup is super easy. Having the pointer functionality mapped to a mouse makes the game feel almost like a PC port at times.

So, that's about it! Anyone else revisit this one recently?

Shortly after playing this I decided to throw New Super Mario Bros Wii on for a bit, and boy was that a contrast. It only made me appreciate the aesthetics of Galaxy more.

If I remember correctly, much of the Wii's first year of software was far from good-looking. Pretty much everything seemed to be exactly the kind of meh-to-good stuff that you'd see on the last gen. I remember Metroid Prime 3 was pretty, but it felt like it wasn't unexpected given the previous two games. Then Super Mario Galaxy released, and I thought, "Developers, if this is possible on the Wii, then what have the rest of you been doing?"

Such a wonderful game. She's perhaps overused these days, but Rosalina was a great new character. Also, I like what you said about the balance of old vs. new. Super Mario 3D Land/World felt like it didn't add enough to the Super Mario universe, following the NSMB route, while Super Mario Galaxy felt just right.

Played it a couple of years ago having come up with a great mapping for the dualshock 4. I think there were two control schemes I came up with (as controls change up for a bit in certain instances).

Absolutely loved it and played through a lot of it. But got distracted by some other newly released game and never went back. Still consider it to be my favorite mario game.

Enjoyed it far more than when I tried playing using the wiimote on the wii which I only got a couple of hours into and felt annoyed with the controls/gave up on.

Seriously. It sometimes looked a generation apart from many of its contemporaries at the time, and outputting at HD resolutions just makes it shine brighter.

Get a dolphin bar for those wiimote. It's the only good way to do it with the pointer bs.

Oh, so it's basically a Wii sensor bar that can connect via Bluetooth? That'd definitely be a nice thing to have.

Been meaning to do the same myself, installed Dolphin 5.0 last week and played some Wind Waker with all the bells and whistles enabled, it was glorious!

But yeah, this series is definitely in my top 5 of all time, higher than any other Mario games (I'm 26 so I've played pretty much all of the main ones, at their time).

I personally preferred the level design in the second game, mostly for the end game difficulty, but that's not to take away from the first. A true classic, beautiful visuals, eargasmic soundtrack (Gusty Garden Galaxy anyone?) and that trademark Nintendo masterful gameplay.

Another playthrough is imminent I feel!

Wind Waker is actually the only Zelda game I've ever really wanted to play (that art design). I've been looking around for a physical copy, but god damn do Nintendo games hold their value. I don't think I've seen a copy anywhere for less than about $40 USD.

The bar itself connects via USB but the Wii remotes themselves connect fine to the bar through Bluetooth. Also the added benefit it's natively supported in Dolphin.

Oh really? Well I've had my copy for years so I wouldn't have noticed.

Obviously the remaster is available for Wii U if you have one, otherwise I would say it's a sound investment. At least 30 hours for a first time casual playthrough, it's my second favourite after OOT, completed it countless times.

And yes that art design, well it looks impeccable at 1080p w/AA and AO, hasn't aged badly at all!

I hate Galaxy, but I enjoyed Galaxy 2 quite a bit. I recently played through 2 in Dolphin using the Steam controller and it was pretty great. Using the touch pad for the pointer worked great in most cases, but some of the Yoshi parts are much harder that way. Other than that, the Steam controller felt like the perfect way to play.

Galaxy was the 3D game that felt like a Mario game in every way Mario 64 didn't. I had a blast with those 2, whereas Mario 64 and Sunshine were not very good games in my opinion.

I was actually tempted to grab the Wii U version, but I'm kinda not sold on the visual changes. I think I might prefer the simpler toon-shading they used in the original.

And remember that thing I said about Nintendo games holding their value?

At the same store (JB Hi-fi):

Ratchet & Clank? $54.
Mirror's Edge Catalyst? $59.
Doom? $59.
Uncharted 4? $69.

Gah damn, it's a three-year-old remaster of a thirteen year old game.

Sunshine is on my list of games I'd like to check out too. I've heard some pretty mixed things, but I love how different they were willing to go with that one.

Too soon probably. Remember the Zelda remakes are from 2 gens ago while Galaxy was last gen. I would expect them on NX.
Twilight Princess blurs that line, being released on the Wii first.

Galaxy 1 and 2 are sold on the Wii U eshop so an HD remaster for the Wii U is unlikely.

I had a go, sound still cuts out on me just like in earlier versions of dolphin :(

That's weird, I've never had that happen. I ripped from my AU disc, maybe regional differences in the ROM?

What are your computer specs if you don't mind me asking?

No probs. Core i7 3820, Geforce GTX 970, 16gb RAM. I'm playing at 1920 x 1200 with 3x native res internal, 4 x MSAA and 16 x AF. Almost never drops below 60fps (and on the rare occasions that it does, it's more like little emulation "hiccups" rather than performance chugging).

Likewise, and Dolphin is indeed superb.

You have a very interesting setup with the keyboard, I never thought about that since I just put the pointer to my right analog.

Yeah Dolphin is awesome, been playing a bit of Mario Galaxy 2 in it and it looks and runs amazing even on my FX6300.

Devs just weren't using the system's secret sauce. They just simply didn't use the machine's capabilities. The Galaxy games just threw out every effect the Wii was capable of and using it wisely. I imagine more games could have looked better if Devs had the budget and played with what was available.

Also because the game was also smart with art, the game looks less dated today compared to some 360/PS3 games that came out at the time.

That's what I started out with, but I couldn't find a comfy setup where I was able to move, point and click simultaneously. The game also tends to use the wiimote functionality in a bunch of weird ways, like the upright-wiimote ball rolling stages, which don't always play well with the right-stick method.

All credit to Dolphin though, they offer a ton of options for setting up your controls.

So, that's about it! Anyone else revisit this one recently?

Actually, I did. I started up a new save and threw myself into the game last weekend after having not played it for a year or three.

It's an odd one. On the one hand, it's the Mario game with bigger ideas, more content, and more production value pizazz than any Mario game has ever had. The thing just explodes with creativity, luxury and spectacle. On the other, it suffers a stalled, linear, slightly repetitive pace not suited to 3D due to its focus on one Power Star at a time, and Mario's stiff, sluggish movement compared to his other games.

I still maintain that the game is overrated, especially on NeoGAF, but it was a treat to revisit it all the same, flaws and all. I'm not really keen on Galaxy 2. I don't know why, I just can't seem to get on with it.

I still think Super Mario 64 and 3D World have done Mario in three dimensions better.

Agreed OP. I've played nearly every Mario game ever made and the Galaxies (2 is basically just a brilliant DLC pack) are my favorite of the bunch.

Also had the pleasure of playing them through on Dolphin, the graphics are amazing and really beautiful with the extra power the PC gives you.

BTW, if you have a wiimote I'd highly recommended getting a mayflash dolphin bar. There's nothing as good as playing a game with the controller it was made for.

One of the greatest games of all time, and my favourite ever.

Just excellent in nearly every facet of gameplay, visuals, variety, music etc. Plus it introduced Rosalina, who is one of my favourite Mario characters.

Really need to play it again one day.

I actually played both SMG games on Dolphin some time ago with wiimote+nunchuk.

...and they still are great. They look absolutely beautiful. Not new R&C beautiful but still very good nonetheless.

There haven't been many 3D platformers since SMG2 so they are still the pinnacle of 3D platforming. Hopefully we get a "real" 3D mario asap.

I just got a GTX 1080, and this morning decided to play with Dolphin 5 and SMG2. It was... Amazing!!

I am able to run with shit maxed and at full 4K resolution ( playing on my Philips 40'' 4K monitor ). It looks great, only thing that hasn't been great is the textures in Marios face while super zoomed in. You can see the pixels on his face texture that are punched out for his eyes to poke through. But that is being picky and silly, it looks great!!

I am playing with my XBONE elite controller. I found that Dolphins controller options allowed me to set everything up fairly easily. I am using the right stick to control the wiimote cursor and it works pretty well! I would highly recommend the OP spent another min setting up a controller. The pointer controls in these games kind of need to be there, but they seem like a side a mechanic that you rarely need to actually use.

Still looks much better than 3D World does. The character models aren't nearly as good, but man that lighting and texture work is mind blowing to this day. Especially in such high resolution!

Looking at those Mario Galaxy pictures in HD is beautiful, I thought it looked good on the WII when it came out too.

Mario Galaxy is my favorite 3d Mario game, the gravity gameplay was a really cool feature and the level/art design was top-notch. Music in that game was mind-blowing, I almost died from a nostalgic attack when I heard this:

Anyone played this with a steam controller?

It's great with the Steam Controller. You just need to set up Dolphin to use the mouse cursor to emulate the IR pointer (Cursor Y-,Y+,X-,X+). I recommend using Mouse Region for the Steam Controller's touch pad (with snapback off), it's a really good way to emulate the Wii Pointer.

Do you need a beast PC to emulate this properly? I have an i7 3612M with 8 GB of RAM and an Intel HD 4000 Graphics card here, wondering if I can get some gaming on it with the new optimizations on Dolphin 5.0?

Just played some 21:9 Mario Galaxy because of this post. There's surprisingly very little jank, there's the obvious menu issues and stretched HUD but during gameplay there's only a tiny bit of pop-in on the sides. It's great!

Here's a video of what it looks like in 2:

But as for the game, Galaxy 2 is still the last really "great" Marip game. NSMBU was the perfection of its formula and 3D World was really, really good but neither had the charm and creativity needed to really be something memorable.

Still amazing after all these years.

Is there a set-up that makes everything work properly with just a WiiU Pro Controller? Don't really feel like breaking out the old wiimote.

since "charm" and "creativity" and "memorable" are basically empty buzzwords that have no bearing on actual quailty in this context guess that means they're actually all in the same tier
