RTTP: The Mummy & Returns

The first Mummy is basically the Indiana Jones 4 we should have had. You could easily swap Brendan Fraiser for Harrison Ford and the movie works as a perfect Indiana Jones flick. The second movie is still fun but I think it tries to hard to build lore around the characters.

Agreed. The first movie is a simple set up. The characters are established in the first minute and there is no secret or hidden agenda. The fun is finding out what happened next.

The next decided to add in chosen one, reincarnation of past selves, and other shit like that. Just bloating the series down. It should have been just another adventure like Indiana. Shame is it even starts off pretty well. Introducing you to the new big baddie with the prologue. The O'Connors now a family and exploring a new tomb. Get pulled back into the shit by Weiz's character again. With the change to London being nice and no problem with the baddie from the first being resurrected too. I like the idea of the two parties competing against each other.

And the exact moment it goes to shit is when Persian guy finds Frazer's tattoo on his arm and brings up how he is a descendant of an ancient clan whose serves the royal family.
 
First is great, one of my favourite films. Second is very good, but not quite on the level of the first. Both of them are just such fun, enjoyable romps though. Always enjoy rewatching them.

There's no third movie and me going to see it at the cinema with my family was just some kind of fever dream. So I tell myself.
 
Really fun flicks. Me and my grandmother used to watch these movies religiously togeather...that third one though....not so much. I hope the tom cruise flicks capture the adventure aspects like these ones and dont focus so much on horror
 
First one is fun, the second one is a movie my dad would put on to fall asleep.

Don't know how though, the Returns DVD had one of the brightest Dolby digital tracks I've ever heard, it was unpleasant to hear.
 
Only liked the first one. Second one was below average with O'Connel being the chosen one and Evelynn being the reincarnation of Nephritire. Really really wasn't needed. -_-

Yep, them turning Brendan's character from some every-man type of guy into some chosen one and turning his wife into a reincarnation of some Egyptian princess were moments where it was subtraction by addition. Those parts were completely unnecessary to the movie. Plus, with a few exceptions, I generally think "you were destined" plot points are really stupid and hurt characters. Beyond that stuff I actually like most of the concepts of the sequel, specially the idea of the story being a race between the two groups.
 
I'm happy I was able to see both in theatres. I still think they hold up well, but the 1st is still a classic.

The 3rd should just burn in a fire.
 
Watched them earlier this month. Yeah, they both hold up, the first one moreso than the sequel.

I pretty much agree with all the criticisms with Returns. It had some good moments, but was brought down by many of the story/lore additions. I liked the idea behind the Scorpion King, but I felt like they didn't do enough with it.

Yeah, Scorpion King was a fun movie in my opinion but it feels really disconnected from Mummy Returns. I was hoping it would be a tad bit more supernatural and also kind of show how that character gets to where he is in Mummy Returns.
 
I actually rewatched the first maybe two months ago and was happy it has held up so well. I plan to check Returns out again soon but haven't yet. I dug it back in the day, though.

Props to the op for the call out to Goldsmith's score.
 
The first film is on my top-ten favorite movies of all time, I find it infinitely rewatchable. The CG is dated as fuck, but the humor and characters really hold up.

A thousand times this! The score for the second movie was such a letdown after the excellent work on the first by Goldsmith.

I really miss Goldsmith and I wish he was still here making cool music.

First and even the 2nd one are great fun movies so re-watchable and just a great sense of adventure that a lot of movies don't have.
 
The first film's climax was really well-done, too. It played to the main three character's established strengths. O'Connell's brute force fighting abilities, Eve's intellect and quick-thinking, and Jonathan's thieving skills all play pivotal roles in defeating Imhotep. You need O'Connell to fend off the zombie Medjai, you need Jonathan to pickpocket the key from Imhotep's robes to unlock the book, and you need Eve to interpret the book in order to make Imhotep mortal.
 
My favorite thing about the first movie is how it re-invented the Mummy as a monster and how he functions. It took elements from George Romero and Clive Barker, both of whom were attached to the movie at one time or another, I believe. The original Universal film is one of the only ones that is nothing to write home about. The original Mummy is literally just a re-skinned Dracula, whereas this version is a completely unique monster with its own story.
 
I'm super-curious to see how the Tom Cruise remake compares; The Mummy, along with The Mask of Zorro are two of the most perfect and tightest adventure movies ever made

with both sharing poorly-executed sequels :(
 
The first one is awesome. I bought the blu-ray recently and it still holds up (and it looks amazing on blu). Haven't watched the second one in years, though.

Don't bother breh. First one is so damn fun though for sure. Pretty much indy 4 (and tin tin is indy 5)

Plus I gotta say Rachel Weisz was so good in here. Hilarious too. In a better world she would have been around for the indy trilogy.
 
Yeah I have to agree that the first movie is a classic and does a really good job of mingling in some horror with a fun Indiana Jones-esque adventure. Wonder how the reboot is going to turn out.

Russell Crowe and Tom Cruise are great casting. But setting it in modern times is a huge strike against it already imo. And then you have one of the worst screenwriters of our era behind it (directing too!) and it seems like an uphill battle
 
The first movie is pretty much perfect - just so much fun.
Second one slightly less but still damn entertaining.
And I actually like the third one...the way the action scenes are filmed bothers me (it's hard to follow what is happening onscreen - can't remember if it's exactly shaky cam, but along those lines), but I enjoy the focus on ancient China a lot.
 
The first one is pretty much perfect. I loved Beni, Johnathan and the Medjai guy. Beni was the best though, due to the WRONG SIDE OF THE RIVER scene, the chair throw, and when he went through a bunch of religious prayers to stop Imhotep.

Second was good, but had a lot of weird stuff, like the mummy chase in London, the pygmy things, the Rock, and that airship.
 
I absolutely love the three films, sure the second one is mostly a retreat of the first film and the third one really suffered from the lack of Weisz, but it was still a fun flick. Action is great, acting is amazing for the type of film and the characters are absolutely lovable! First Scorpion King was also fine spin-off, really went down there from there. And no, the third one really isn't that one. Not really great either though.

The Mummy Returns is one of my favourite So Bad, It's Good movies.

Its a movie where clearly everyone is just having fun and goofing around, and there are so many funny bits, intentionally or not.

So funny XD i love that he's so committed to running into frame. Like he's thinking "well shit, my plan's ruined, but u may as well run for a few more seconds before I yell "nooooooo!"
 
Loved both really. Cheesy sure but a healthy amount of cheese mixed with some fantastic set pieces. Especially love the ancient Egypt sections
