First, a little backstory. For those who know me here on GAF, I'm a bit of a Marvel fan (as well as Capcom one). My first comic was The Amazing Spider-Man #14 (the first appearance of the Green Goblin), MvC1 was amongst my first games that I've ever played (& my first fighting game), & I've loved Capcom fighters overall (specifically Street Fighter III: Third Strike). With the announcement of Marvel vs. Capcom 3, I knew that I had to shell out the cash to get the game. And while I was a bit burned by the announcement of UMvC3, my negativity was drowned out by the reveal of Phoenix Wright, Nova, & Rocket Raccoon (I'm a huge Ace Attorney & Cosmic Marvel fan). I got the money needed for the game, got a friend of mine in my Theatre Arts group to pick up the game for me (since he was going to a midnight release for Assassin's Creed, anyway), & got my first personal arcade stick a few months later. Basically, UMvC3 means a lot to me, more so since that friend who got the game for me (out of the kindness of his heart, & even covered tax) is no longer with us. My PS3 copy of UMvC3 is my last living reminder of him, & realizing that made me want to pick the game up again. Now enough of the sorrow, onto my comeback.
While I do still love the game as a whole to death, coming back to UMvC3 after either getting acquainted with many of the fighting games that have come out recently or getting reacquainted with the games that I've since become rusty at & have been re-released made me realize some of the glaring balancing errors in the game. The online, while it was tolerable for me at the time, is starting to show its age (especially with games like Killer Instinct & the Street Fighter V Beta having solid-ass online). As for X-Factor, even though it was toned down compared to Vanilla, is still off the walls crazy. More so when it can easily turn the tide of the match very easily. There's also bullshit such as TAC Infinites, Bullet Hell, Dark Phoenix, & the army of Galactuses that I have to fight online (not sure about XBL, but it's a nightmare on PSN). But even in spite of all of that, it's one of my favorite fighting games. Say what you want about the touch-of-death combos, it's in Mahvel's DNA, & I wouldn't have it any other way. The roster is pretty diverse, which is nice considering how X-Men heavy the previous MvC games were (& I'm kinda scared for the Marvel side if MvC4 happens in the near future). I would have liked characters like Star-Lord, Carol Danvers (who was Ms. Marvel at the time, but is now Captain Marvel), the Maximoff Twins (Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch), Wasp, Black Panther, Vision, & Green Goblin, but I'm more than happy with what we got. And lastly, the attention to detail for each character. A good chunk of the roster has their design based on my favorite incarnation of each character (lucky me, I suppose), as well as my favorite voice actors for each......except maybe Doom (I'm not hating on Paul Dobson, I just like Lex Lang's Doom in EMH more). Overall, UMvC3 was to me a love letter on everything that I like about Marvel & Capcom, coupled with some engaging (albeit broken as hell) gameplay that's hype as hell to watch. I sincerely hope that Capcom gets past whatever financial issues they're having so they can regain the Marvel license & make MvC4 a reality (look here for my posts & enzo_gt's on the matter). I wouldn't even mind Sony footing the bill in exchange for the game being PS4-only (my final decision to get the PS4 was because of SFV). For now, I'll just hit up some local UMvC3 tournaments (once I either get a 360 stick or mod my Eightarc Onyx to work with the 360) & try to survive the cesspool that is UMvC3 on PSN.
