RTTP: Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

I loved following this pre release as a lurker the most. I still bought the game but the online just doesn't work with my crappy internet. so I just stopped playing after getting the endings for my favorite characters (just want to say that Tessa appearing in Dr. Strange's ending was cool). I also hated that most of my favorites (Hsien Ko and Arthur) were crappy so there was that too

I will say that it's still my favorite fighting game to watch even after this long
Now you know my pain as a Phoenix Wright main.

Personally, I never enjoyed UMvC3. I played it for a few weeks and was finished. Playing online felt terrible. Killed it for me.

Hsien Ko and Phoenix Wright are the only two "so bad that they are damn near unplayable" characters in the game. Even Hsien Ko can be used as an assist although due to the nature of the game you can't play it like MVC2 where you have one assist character, even assist characters need to function as an anchor (like Shuma or Arthur).

A tournament was won by a point Chun Li in the same weekend as the video I posted.

And yeah the online in the game is butt cheeks. That alongside no H&H local play and the TAC mechanic was the game's biggest shortcoming.

New tech is still being exposed/discovered too. Within the last month we've had Maluk shield and the character position reset glitch come out.

I love UMvC3. I think the next MvC3 should make those universal ABCS-jump-BBCS should be for every character; So many friends try to pick Spiderman or Thor and can't pull off the simple combos and get frustrated by it. I feel like I rarely experienced high level play but when I do its really satisfying to see it with not just combo execution but with movement as well. Its a game where you can recognize skill almost immediately.

What gets me is there are so few games where synergy of your team is so important even before the battle begins. MvC series one of those games where you can think about gimmick teams or playstyle even when you are not playing.

Online netcode was/is rough. For a game so integral for timing and combos, lag can kill and fun for both sides.

I would love to have another MvC.

Heroes and Heralds was such a missed opportunity. Not playing locally or having saves for multiple sets was a terrible decision.

Those things used to be "tech" but nowadays they are unintended mechanics/features/bugs that get patched out with the swiftness.

Maluk shield is amusing because it brings things back full circle to MVC2.

I don't think intentionality is a necessity for something being classified as 'tech' :P

No I mean that things like these would've been called tech back in the day but nowadays with the advent of easy patching, developers just patch that out without players getting to explore such glitches/bugs.

You can especially see it in the MKX community, when things like these are discovered they rarely say it's a tech but more "that's not working as intended" and soon enough it gets patched out.

General depends on the severity of it of course. Minor ones like these would probably be ignored until it gets abused in tournaments which forces developer hand.

Chun li is pretty damn solid though. Honestly i'd put her in the tier before all the top tiers.

My favorite game of all time. I still play it on the regular, own it for all platforms (360, PS3, digital and physical copies on Vita). It's still fun for me, somehow. It actually feels fair to me, probably be cause I never play anyone who's so good that they really make it feel unfair. And because infinites are nearly impossible to pull off online, and I only play online. Marvel Vs. Capcom 4 is the one game that would absolutely force me to buy a new-gen console for. Viva le Marvel!

UMVC3 (and the Marvel vs. series for that matter) will always have the "either you love it or you hate it" opinion attached to them. You either get the type of gameplay/speed/options available to you or you don't.

No she's still low tier. But not the unplayable low tier category.

The thing is she doesnt really offer much to the team since her assists are ass so you have to pretty much play her on point or 2nd, but she has crazy good normals. But yeah she cant touch the top tiers at all.

I know how you feel, seeing as MvC3 forced my hand into buying a PS3. But what about Street Fighter V?

Game to me is just Resident Evil the fighter. I only play Wesker, Nemesis, and Chris. So everything else is just kind of a bonus. Overall I like the game, but yeah coming back to it recently as well. There is a lot of bullshit in it, but that seems to be the case with these crossover games. Since MVC2 was the same way.

Note:I am not a pro fighter of any kind.

I want to love this game, but it didn't help my baby girl Hsien-Ko one bit. The moment before release when someone picked Hsien-Ko on stream and Seth Killian said "That's not good", I was absolutely furious. Fuck you Capcom! Why didn't you fix her?! Just what did you expect her to do?

Oh well. Playable Amaterasu, Taskmaster and Phoenix Wright was nice I guess.

SFV is number two, but it's not quite at "force my hand" status. I just never quite caught on with SF like I did with Marvel.
To each their own, I suppose. I didn't really get into SFIV as much as I had hoped, but SFV really has me hyped.

Ahh- yeah. That's certainly true. It's an end of an era in a lot of ways. Adaptation has been replaced by 'wait for the patch.'

My favorite fighting game of all time is mvc2, and to me umvc3 was such a huge disappointment. It just didn't feel like "marvel" to me anymore. To this day I still play mvc2, but I doubt I'll ever fire up umvc3 again.

Does anybody think mvc4 will ever happen, ever?

The problem is that, as awesome as a Capcom All-Stars would be, it wouldn't sell that well. The only franchises that have major mainstream popularity are Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Mega Man, Dead Rising, & Devil May Cry (if I missed one, please let me know). The MvC games sold mostly on the Marvel brand, hence why it was the Vs. match-up that was the most persistent. That being said, MvC4 isn't entirely impossible. However, sacrifices would have to be made if we got MvC4 anytime soon. Here's a theoretical example of said sacrifices.

Wolverine -> Necalli or Black Panther
X-23 -> Gamora
Jean Grey -> Scarlet Witch
Sentinel -> Groot
Magneto -> Ultron or Adam Warlock
Storm -> Kelda
Deadpool -> Blade
Doctor Doom -> Black Bolt, Loki, or Ronan the Accuser
Super-Skrull -> Crystal or Medusa (though if they go with Medusa, Ms. Marvel could also get some of his abilities, mainly his stretching moves)
*Rogue -> Captain Marvel
*Cyclops -> Vision

* = Not in UMvC3

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around that. I'm just glad that that Mike Haggar the Mayor of Earth won EVO.

Agreed but there is almost no way Thanos would not make it into a MVC4

I'm still salty bout UMvC3 announcement...still have my limited edition OG version...I retired it pretty quickly. Soon as I saw online mode was more barebones than Vanilla SF4 I knew the scam was real. Still would like to see another. A sprite shader would be appreciated. Still love Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter and MvC2 the most though. Tatsunoko never got the true chance to shine like it should've though.

12 new chars and rebalancing/retooling of existing chars/system mechanics for what wasn't a full priced disc seems pretty fair to me.

It's so sad that Marvel wants nothing to do with the game or the series anymore apparently. All this game needed was a really solid patch, or at least more time in the oven before release. The fact that this game is as busted an imbalanced as it is and yet still gets big numbers at EVO shows how good the core gameplay is.

I wish I bothered to learn how to play it well, but holy shit the online is terrible and I never had anyone to play against locally. If Capcom ever reuses what they developed/learned from UMVC3 in a "Capcom All-Stars" game, I'll get it day 1.

The gameplay needs to comeback. Marvel seems like a burden, and I'd be OK with moving forward without them for a crazy assist based team fighter from Capcom. What have Niitsuma and Neo_G been up to since, anyways? Mobile/Capcom Online Games stuff?

When I first played Marvel 3 I didn't have much fun with it, trying to learn to play 3 characters while not dropping your combos and converting assists was too time consuming for me but I do really enjoy watching the game. It has some of the best hype of any fighting game compared to Street fighter, its just a shame Capcom never gave it an update considering the fact that the game is starting to show its age more and more every year.

There were a lot of things that made me feel abrasive towards Marvel VS. Capcom 3 & it's expansion pack, but I will say that the opening cinematic for both games was phenomenal to watch.

Game is still solid, fun when you play people your level.

but with any hyper fighter, find someone that plays for keeps and you'll spend most of your time slowing putting the controller down and getting a drink.

speaking of fighting games, hope Arc does something with the matchmaking for GG:xrd/Revelator.

I'd play it more (PS4) if it didn't take years to find a match only for it to have a frame delay of 12-15 frames.

Maybe I'm missing something, but how come X-Men and Fantastic Four would be impossible entries for MvC4?
Marvel has removed the X-Men & Fantastic Four from all merchandise, cartoons, & games released after Contest of Champions to spite Fox.

That a common misconception. I have a link in the OP that should clear things up. Short of it, Marvel has been expressing interest in the MvC series as of late with references to it in their comics & cartoons.

As I've said before, Capcom All-Stars would be nice, but it wouldn't sell that much. Capcom doesn't have that many mainstream franchises beyond 5 or 6 of them. The MvC series succeeded mostly because of the Marvel brand.

I hate UMvC3 solely for the fact that it made Tron Bonne completely unusable. She was my main in vanilla. Other than that, I had fun playing against a friend who was a zero main. Not.

I feel for you both. Hsien Ko along with Sentinel just scream last minute additions based on how horribly they were designed, though Sentinel was lucky enough to be tweaked up whilst Hsien Ko was left to rot in the bottom tier. As for Tron, it completely baffles me. She and Haggar both had similar issues, so what do they do? Change Haggar carefully and then decide Tron needs a waterfall of nerfs for no good reason. Changed a mid tier into a borderline bottom tier instantly.

This is what made me not play as much. The control setupmessed up that drill move for me
I suck at Dragon Punch

The game offends me simply because of no Mega Man incarnation at all. Like, how the fuck do you mess that up?

If I recall, Kenji Inafune specifically requested Zero & Tron Bonne for Vanilla Marvel 3. Not sure about why we didn't get a Mega Man in Ultimate.

Wolverine has been axed from all Marvel games released after Contest of Champions (same for the other X-Men & F4 characters). Marvel Animation also has zero plans to bring either him or Deadpool back for more cameos in the recent cartoons in the future. In short, not even Wolverine is safe from Marvel & Fox's dick-fighting contest. Oh well, there's always the comics
, albeit with X-23 as Wolverine & Old Man Logan in the main Earth, but you get the idea.

wow really? I knew Marvel had been blacklisting the XMen but I thought maybe at least Wolverine would be spared due to his popularity.

Never really played it but from the outside the game always seemed like a beautiful source of creativity and tech. Watching people develop that stuff and start to use it in a competitive environment was really interesting.

There were moments where I want to get UMVC3, but I'm glad I didn't. Sucks that I got MvC3 then 10 or so months later UMVC3 came out.

Abegen just won Manila Cup with Tron/Thor/She-hulk like a week ago. Unusable? Really?

Evo winners do not determine if a game is balanced or not. There's so many variables and so many things to consider at Evo that it's honestly a lot of luck to make it all the way.

Stop using that argument.

Sure, but it might cost them less, and they could get away with a smaller roster and even recycled game/engine/art design, etc. Continuous DLC would also be a possibility. It would definitely have a harder time, though. They just need to determine the scope and expectations properly, I guess.
