Rumor 101: Perfect Dark 2 - Xbox 360’s Next Humungous Killer App

If they sort out the characters so the game looks more like:

and less like:

I'll be sold. I've always thought PD had a really interesting universe that's kinda unique in games these days, Rare just haven't exploited it very well so far.

Rare can still make a good game.

I believed this for a time. Then we got their GC, X-Box, and 360 output, and I have trouble buying into this anymore. Its been almost 8 years since their last great game (Conker). There has got to be some kind of statute of limitations with respect to how much faith you blindly throw at a developer based on their (long gone) glory days. Rare now is not Rare of the SNES-N64 days.

VP is no way a bad game, maybe not aimed for you, but it was great.

Sorry, but Viva Pinata was truly awesome. To disagree would indicate that you have no soul.

I didnt say it was bad. Im saying they havent made anything up to snuff with GE, PD, DKC, Conker, etc. since the N64 era. Im saying that I think they've gone from a AAA developer to more of a middle-of-the-pack one over the past decade.

VP is considered to be great, where have you been? GAF loved it

It was a great game no matter who you are.

I love the Hater mentality, it's now swtiched from "Rare haven't made one great game in 8 years" to "Rare haven't made two great games in 8 years".

Agree.

PDZ was a troubled game, in part due to launch deadline. Rare can do great, cosistent and coherent art design, evidence by Viva Pinata.

The latest interview they admit they know PDZ wasn't up to their standards. A more colorful and sexy Black or something would fit well.

Viva Pinata had the classic Rare charm, had amazing graphics and a ton of depth in gameplay. I definately have more confidence in them now.

I have faith. PDZ was just rushed out of the gate for launch and I still found some good qualities about it. RARE actually taking their time on the sequel spells out a good omen to me.

I think losing the Free Radical peeps actually hurt both companies. PD0 was pretty bad, and I dont think any of the Timesplitters games has matched up to either GE or PD. So instead of one company making great console shooters, we have two making mediocre-to-fairly good ones.

i still think that technically Kameo and PDZ stand up to the best of what is available now, seriously.

also through a work conference (looking at XNA) I met some of the guys at Rare, lovely blokes, but they wouldn't let out any details about what they were doing directly! Then one of the lead graphics programmers John something (I have his card in the office) did a demo about the newer work they were doing and some of the technology behind the graphics, (principally qwith how easily it could be ported into the xna framework) honestly the things they can do with that engine of theirs is amazing, and will only get better.

I think next year is going to be as good as this year for games if not better!

Please someone tell me that this entire piece is sarcasm.
I'll accept "His 'sources' are fucking with his mind" as a b-rate excuse if nothing else becomes available.

Yeah, a killer app. Because mature FPS are exactly what the 360 is lacking of, sure. Jesus. Ever wondered why it is not being able to be a viable alternative in Japan or Europe?

Does Rare still know what Perfect Dark is...after PDZ I´m not so sure about that.
All they had to do was building upon a winning formula and lift it to the next generation, and what they actually did was failing beyond belief.
This time:
-controls that actually work, please. It´s not good when one has to ask for that.
-Art. Not "lets throw colours around the screen".

And much more...

I hope the game will be as fun as the N64 title, which is one of my favourite games ever.

And for no reason at all, here's my Perfect Duck Zero:

Biggest failing of the game IMO was that they stayed far too close to the two generation old PD on N64 when the console FPS had changed so much. I don't hate the game like many, but the trial/error segmented mission structure lifted straight from the N64 games felt archaic.

On a side note, I don't think I'll ever understand the absolute crushing animosity people have toward this game. It's no classic, and I understand it didn't really meet the enormously high expectations but wow, almost two years later and you can still feel the bitterness.

Okay Rare, repeat after me:

Good. Tight. Responsive controls.

Good. Tight. Responsive controls.

Good. Tight. Responsive controls.

Good. Tight. Responsive controls.

Got it?! Good! Now repeat after me:

Good. Intuitive. Fun level design.

etc...

Wow. I really like VP and still play it every now and then. Not connected to live of course. Kameo is still one of the most beautiful games on 360. But PD0, I didn't like at all. And the main reason was the story. Between that and GOW, I really don't know which one did worst at telling the story of the game. But if they can somehow bring that together this time maybe it will be worth the score Che gave it. Maybe?

And why is that?

Because Nintendo looks over and supervises their development studios. Wasn't Miyamoto always giving advise and directing RARE and even Retro with their games? So in a way, he is correct to say that rare loses its charm without Nintendo.

I would like to know who used the term killer app here? Is it the "journalist" or the dev or the so called source? I don't think any dev would call their own game a killer app.

jesus christ i'm sick of xbox games that are "dark shooters." these game are fantastic, but after bioshock and halo 3, the market is getting saturated. ffs there are other types of games you morons.

Aren't PDZ and Shadowrun still the only Xbox 360 multiplayer shooters that support bots? It has been said many times before, but bots are still the best way to ease new players into "real" multiplayer matches. The bots in PDZ, with their different personalities that could be set were great.

Just give me a realistic/epic next-gen Blast Corps sequel with good physics and where EVERYTHING is destructible.

I loved Blast Corps but never has a game made me want to commit suicide like that game did. It causes stress, heart problems, anxiety attacks... you start to care less for your family and friends because they're doing a pathetic job at truly understanding your feelings which are nothing but a puddle of fecal misery. Weight loss eventually settles in, you become anorexic, people single out your appearance in a disgusting fashion when you do decide to go out into public, which is rare, and your dog that you have had for many years won't even come near you.

Blast Corps 2 would signal the end of human life as we know it. The first game was merely a warning sign. I only hope and pray it never sees the light of day.

It's not like Rare doesn't make other types of games as well.

Yeah, Rare have basically no pedigree in FPS's any more. I don't know why 360 fans would be excited about this at all, they already have some of the best in the field. Heck, even PS3 owners wouldn't need to get excited about this. I think you're writing off Free Radical though, Timesplitters was more than fairly good and personally I think Haze has potential (yeah, yeah, I'm a huge Sony fanboy, every PS3 exclusive is the best game ever etc.).

Still, your point was how amazing the original Perfect Dark was, and that neither studio has surpassed it, and in that you are correct. It remains my favourite console FPS, the multiplayer was awesome, and frankly I thought Goldeneye was only OK.

Halo 3 is a dark shooter?

I have no faith in Rare. I got hyped for PD0 and was let down big time. I got excited for Viva Pinata and again was sorely disappointed. The Rare of old (Goldeneye, Banjo Kazooie, Conker) is long gone in my opinion. Until they can release a decent game worth investing my time into, I will continue to look the other way.

Perfect Dark Zero was great. Haters be damned.

Single player was fun, and multiplayer was better than Halo 2.

The problem here is that 99% of people who hate on the game haven't even played it for longer than 2 minutes. And to those people, I say GTFO.
