RUMOR - Capcom vs. Tatsunoko Wii-bound?

Well thought out analysis Tre. I can only hope that Capcom considers the grey market (ie, the Americans that likely won't be able to easily play TvC if it's on Wii only due to region locked consoles and the nightmare of licenses in NA) and releases a version for the PS3. Either that or some kind of assurance that all license issues are worked out ahead of time (I think it was you or DCharlie that mentioned this possible position to me earlier in #GA). I can't afford a JP Wii at this time but I can't miss this fighting game (as the verdict is still out for me on SFIV)

Unfortunately, the very fact that they chose Tatsunoko pretty effectively showcased that Capcom wasn't thinking about "us", per se. This game was basically intended to be a game for the Japanese; after all, who else would be the ones that have the highest probability of knowing who the hell occupies the OTHER half of the roster? :lol

Allowing the game to be at EVO (in whatever form that needed Ken the Eagle removed...), was done more to basically work the "IMPORT THIS GAME!" angle, as strongly as they can. Arcade owners will definitely import the game, and they won't have anything to worry about, nor would Capcom have to worry about "officially" marketing this game.

As for the console-consumer? Well, as has been outlined several times on both this thread and the other, the Wii is fairly easy to import for. An easy, 4 minute "installation" of Twlight Hack, Geckoloader, and Homebrew Channel turns your machine into a region-free console, without even having to worry about 3.3 putting a damper on your parade.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if Capcom was considering this notion too...barring the PS3, the Wii is definitely the next gen console that caters to importing the easiest. It's the best they can do to hope for the best, barring the notion that TC has as much of a chance of coming over here as the Jump ______ Stars games on the DS do...

So this game is out at the arcades?

480p eh? I wonder if they're using a CRT or LCD monitor on those arcades. I wonder if the Japanese arcade fans even care.

But whats the deal behind this Wii based arcade? Is Nintendo trying to take over the arcade market as well? I thought arcades were in the decline in Japan.

You'll have to forgive me, I don't know a whole lot about the arcades. :D

Not yet. It's doing loke tests now, and will do so over the next few months, but the "official" release is not supposed to occur until the end of the year at the earliest.

Thing is? They really don't. :lol

As it stands right now, the 480p thing is really only an option that some arcade owners may be able to use, but most places will just rely on 4:3 and nobody will really care. The majority of games at Japanese loke tests just use 4:3, the Viewlix monitor employing ones are more along the lines of the "exceptions".

Again, the thing to remember is that, largely, the Japanese aren't as thrilled with HD gaming as the West is. It's nice, but not really necessary in their eyes, which is why the PS2 and Wii are cleaning up over there.

Arcades may not be as prominent as they once were, but they are still living, and still fairly profitable. And as long as that's the case, the arcades aren't going to die off just yet.

Any way, about Nintendo and their possible new arcade hardware? It may sound weird, but then loses it quickly after you consider Nintendo's history...

After all, let's not forget that Nintendo got their real "start" in the arcades. Before the Famicom/NES, Mario and DK were making waves in arcades first.

Then there was the "Ultra 64"-hardware that was used to run Killer Instinct and such. While it was rumored to be based on N64 tech, that wasn't true; it was actually something that Rare and Midway collaborated on that was actually quite beyond the limitations of the 64 itself, and Nintendo just endorsed it.

More recently, Ninty actually collaborated with Namco and Sega to craft the "Triforce" board, which was actually based more on GC tech than anything else. F-Zero AX is the main game that people remember from this arcade board.

So, in the end, Ninty actually has more involvement with the arcade market than some may originally think. This new Wii-board would just be another step to see if they can really pull some profit from it.

I'd like to think that with that "Wii-Motion Plus" being such a big deal to Nintendo in 2009, that, along with this Wii-based Arcade Board, may be part of a new plan to really give us some interesting arcade games, that can easily have a presence in the arcades, and then back to the Wii later.

For instance...we may now have an ideal platform that caters directly to 1:1 arcade games. I'd really like that, as that Konami sword game is one of my faves, and always lamented how there was, quite literally, NO WAY that game could be truly brought home, arcade-perfect.

I see your point.

Would be strange if they built a Wii based arcade that had the Wiimote, WM+, and balance board built it. That could make for an interesting adventure arcade game. Maybe a way better Dragon Quest Swords game? :D

I wonder why Capcom didn't use this engine for SF4, though.

Hey! Anything's possible in this crazy era of gaming, I suppose.

I wonder why Capcom didn't use this engine for SF4, though.

Well, SF4, from the outset, was going to be a game that was going to do its damndest to cater to the West.

Capcom of USA is the main steward of the franchise now, so they were the ones who wanted it to be a HD game, utilizing a "classic" roster that fans would recognize, 6-button control scheme, all serving to be the thing that would most stand to make Americans happy.

TC, as I've stated above, is definitely a game that caters more to Japanese interests. No HD, simplified control scheme, more cost-effective hardware...? The differences between these two games are as stark as the differences between night and day, and it all comes down to the different markets Capcom was aiming for in each case.

I see.

I'm surprised they didn't build it to be more flexible, though. I mean, I have no doubt that Street Fighter IV will eventually hit all of the consoles (and probably handhelds), but I'm kind of surprised it wasn't like that from the beginning.

I dunno, it's been a looong time since I've purchased a fighter though. Last one was probably Soul Calibur 3 on discount for like $9. Last full price one?... I'm pretty sure that would be Tekken 3.

Maybe SFIV will bring back fighting games. I don't really know why I lost interest in the first place. Just kind of did.

I hope if they make a new Capcom Vs. Marvel it's on all three new platforms.
