Rumor: External HDD support coming to Xbox One with next update

I have 20 games and a few demos and I'm just over 50% used.

I have 40 GB remaining and will have to delete stuff when I get my next game. You must have some small games then.

I have

AC Black Flag: 22.2GB
COD Ghosts: 41.4GB
Dead Rising 3: 24.GB
Madden 25: 12.GB
Peggle 2: 2GB
Project Spark:1.4GB
Titanfall: 16.9GB
Trials Fusion: 4.9GB
Ryse: 34.5GB
Powerstar Golf: 3.8GB
PvZ: 12.6GB
NBA 2k14: 43.8GB
Forza: 36.8GB
Child of Light 2.3GB
BF4: 35GBGB

Pus a couple other things that Im not gonna list, plus apps. Thats over 290GB of just Games.

I have most of those (bolded), in addition to other games. It seems you just have some of the largest games available -- BF4, COD, NBA2k14. Regardless, my point was that the HDD does not begin to fill up after 2 games

Thank God! i have only used 6% and im still scared about running out of space.

and with Wolfenstein being as big as it is, this is a much needed update.

Clearly it would be way complicated for him. I don't understand how convenient is to have usb wires hanging around because for some retarded unknown reason console manufacturer won't allow you to upgrade to ur own storage

pros and cons for both. I like the neatness of upgrading your HDD in the PS4, but I did mine before I even switched it on the first time. Doing it after you have hundreds of GB on the original drive would be a pain in the ass IMO. In that case, adding extra storage with an external HDD on the Xbox one is more convenient as you don't disturb what is already installed. And at least Xbox has sensible rear USB sockets so you can hide the drive

It would be so much more convenient to keep that drive in and not have to worry about losing or transferring files. Just plugging in an external drive and being able to choose between the two would be awesome.

Nah, I don't want another thing with wires plugging in to my console. It's so messy. I prefer having everything all in one and being able to upgrade internal HDD

MS are just killing it. They are making sony look embarrassing really. Keep it up MS

Yeah Sony. Fuck you and your already allowing us to upgrade our HDDs on day one. How dare you deny us the pleasure of getting that functionality later on in a software update.

The best solution would be of course to have both switchable internal and external drives.

But again performance wise it is always better to have 2 than just one.

Sony could have both if they ever decide to.

Would external HDDs have any problems staying on for extended periods of time? Since I keep my xbox on standby, would the external hdd be running the whole time? I know no one has the update yet, but just wondering how external hdds would work in these situations.

depending on what they do, or how they are used, if used to cache install or saves, then I can see them powering off. If they were used to house updates (kind of doubtful) then they would need to be on to receive said updates. I envision the drives being a dumb storage vs. dynamic or live.

Hopefully it has no size restrictions and we aren't limited to only buying a Xbox branded external HD.

has MS changed it's stance on this yet?

the 360 was plagued with overpriced proprietary accessories, even today with the third redesign. I know that it has somewhat made the jump over with the headset adapters.

An external solution allows us to use 3.5 drives which have better price/gb ratio. That is a distinct advantage over upgrading the internal PS4 one. But being able to do both would be best, put an SSD or hybrid 2.5 internal for cache, then a giant 3.5 one external.

I'm sure that this presents the least issues with customers damaging their HDD connectors. Personally, if there only an arbitrary choice of one, I'll always be happier with an external USB 3.0 connection.

Great to have more support for the latter. I agree that it's far more likely people will up their storage this way than will crack open their PS4's to replace the drive inside, but hell it's not too hard to crack open your XB1 especially given all the extra space inside.

I assume there are some resources for cloning your XB1 HDD to another so you can just replace the internal drive if you don't mind voiding warranties?

Just ordered a 4TB Western Digital drive from Amazon. I like the USB approach more than swapping the internal drive. More convenient. I will just hide the HDD in the same place I am hiding the power brick.

I said this in the Wolfenstein thread but this can't come soon enough, I have hit my limit and needed to remove some games so I could install New Order.

I assume the USB ports are powered, or at least enough to power a HDD without an external power source?

EDIT: Oh wow, I didn't realise so many people have 100GB + space left, maybe I should cut down on the game buying!?

If you ask me, adding more memory in addition to the existing hdd will always be better than replacing the main drive to get more storage. It seems like an immensely more elegant solution to me.

I think he meant in software support/updates...and in that respect, they are doing quite well compared to Sony (although it sounds like Sony has done some good things for PS4 owners, too; just not as much and as fast as MS).

They both started at different points with different amounts of functionality, big are updating different things at different rates, and both have different approaches to certain features. A more pointless target for 'who is doing best' would be difficult to find.

Which one did you buy?

So I just plug this into the USB. And bam, eight times the storage?

Ok now somebody with an external usb 3.0 hdd case connect an ssd to it and see if there is a definite speed increase. I feel we should have an hdd speed thread dedicated to the xbox one just like the ps4 thread.

I still feel a trump card MS are going to play sooner rather than later is 2 new skus - one sku with no kinect or bluray drive and a large hard drive (at least 1 TB) and another with no hard drive and a bluray drive (obviously there would be at least a 64GB on board SD card since the system forces game installs).

Either of these options would allow for a lower price sooner rather than later, both would likely also require a redesigned system , the digital only version might even be shrunk down to the dimensions of a wii but with an external power brick.

This hypothetical non-HDD version could instead use external drive support for those that wanted to have more then 1 game installed at a time.

Either model could be priced at 299.99, make it available by christmas and perhaps MS might be able to catch up to sony.
