Rumor- Gates to announce som'n big for 360 at CES?

Good grief. It's CES, not an E3 press conference.

Anyone expecting gaming megatons is nuts. No new console SKU. No exclusive shifting. No crazy Sony/Nintendo-killing game announcements.

If history is any indication, you'll get a bunch of vague talk about devices connecting together, how high speed networks and big storage devices are the greatest thing ever and the usual annual rollout of dusty MS research concept demos that won't ship ever. Zunes, digital cameras, IPTV and Windows Media Center PCs. That's what CES is mostly about, not Steve Jobs taking up contract work for MS demoing Metal Gear Solid 4 exclusive for the new Xbox 360 portable, co-developed with Nintendo.

Hell, you'd be lucky to get Shaq talking about Xbax or a Forza BSOD.

I don't think everyone should get their hopes up for this. Most likely nothing will happen that effects normal 360 gamers.

This is CRAZY I know, but what if that 1 Billion charge that MS took to "Fix" 360's wasn't just to "Fix" them but to ungrade EVERY single 360 to an HD-DVD drive.Think about it 1 Billion to fix xboxes? How does that make sense? If 10 Million Xboxes were made before they fixed the defect and EVERY single ONE failed that would work out to $100 a piece, it doesn't cost MS anywhere NEAR 100 to "Upgrade a Heatsink" and fix the X clamps. But a $100 makes sense if they not only plan on fixing EVERY heatsink but also throwing in a HD DVD Drive.Crazy I know

Only read 1st and last pages...

I suspect it'll be a proper media center with 360 capabilities, possibly coupled with a few service announcements like expanded media downloads.

It's so obvious that MS wants to own the box under your telly and they've been converging brands like Live and Media Center. Something with HD-DVD playback, TV functionality and a proper browser would make 360 a serious contender for that.

DOES.
NOT.
MAKE.
SENSE.
LOL.

That would be impossible to achieve I think.. And I won't send my 360 away until it RROD's (again).

Ya right bro. Lets see. MS says there are 17 million 360's sold, on top of whats in the channel that still doesn't have HD-DVD drives.

17 million X 179.99

3,059,830,000,000

Your already over 3 billion dollars. Even using a lower price point for the HD-DVD drive puts it over a billion. Toshiba makes these things, they are not going to give them away free.

I think he's going to announce an Xbox controlled house of the future. :-P Whatever it is, it could be big since it's his last CES as Microsoft chairman.

That makes less sense than the Chewbacca Defense.

I agree a high end SKU ain't going to do jack, but what if MS and Toshiba came to an agreement to put a HD-DvD drive in ALL new Sku's? with the way the 360 sells it would be NO time before the "PS3 Blu Effect " is TOTALLY defused. Maybe Toshiba/MS split the cost of doing this, I am NOT at all convinced that a HD-DVD drive would REALLY Cost more than an extra $50 over a regular DVD Drive(that it would replace)=. If MS did this they could just cut out one of their scheduled price cuts to pay their half.
You're fucking insane.

Zune will get games that can be downloaded via XBL and transferred to the Zune.

This is the kind of "news" CES usually delivers.

:lol awesome.

Would a 360 with built-in HD-DVD drive even play existing 360 games ok?

For streaming stuff and loadng the speed would be off and everything wouldn't it?

I can see them focusing on the 360 and Zune playing nicer together, especially given the topic of integrated devices. I wouldn't be surprised if they did some integration of the Marketplaces and shared content between Zune/360, or allow transfer to the Zune of content bought on the 360.

Xbox Live Arcade games, TV shows, and possibly HD movies downloaded from Marketplace playable via Zune? Yes, please.

Bill Gates is going to make a call to the Microsoft offices and tell them to press the big red button and every single Xbox 360 worldwide will suddenly have HD-DVD drive capabilities.

There is no reason they couldn't get an HD-DVD drive that runs at current 360 DVD drive speeds.

Considering that this is the same dude who tried to school PC gamers about what was what in PC hardware, referencing his mighty PC and its awesome amounts of memory... only it turned out the mighty PC was built around integrated graphics, and the lots of memory was shared memory, well I think he's been sending letters from crazy town for some time.

Goldeneye 007 XBLA.
Higher res, updated assets, and online mp.

Wii will get it on VC, but just the vanilla N64 version with no enhancements, because Nintendo is lazy.

That would be awesome. And seriously, why not? Java? H264? Please. You're bigger than that, MS.

Part of me hopes Microsoft does bundle HD-DVD into a SKU just for the hilarity of it. Their position on the external drive all along has been to make it an option because of the uncertainty surrounding the hi-def format war. I'd love to see someone ask them, "So, now that you've lost Warner Brothers, why are you suddenly so confident in HD-DVD?"

Well we certyainly know what he's NOT going to announce now.

Hey....Maybe they will announce that Blu Ray add on like they said ;)

Not that there is any merit to his suggestion (Because there isn't) but Microsoft wouldn't have to pay the retail price on HDDVD drives.

MS' take on the war was to prolong it as much as possible and hurt PS3 as well. It'll pay off until the end of 08 it seems when the war is over UNLESS Toshiba does something DRASTIC NOW.

Wouldn't be a bad business decision. Price it cheap, undercut incentives for existing 360 owners to get a PS3 for Blu-Ray etc.
